ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE
A principle discovered by the Greek scientist Archimedes that states that “any body immersed
in a fluid is acted upon by an upward force (buoyant force) equal to the weight of the
displaced fluid.
To solve problems in buoyancy, identify the
forces acting and apply conditions of static
equilibrium.

Problem no. 1
An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on salt water of Gs =
1.03. If the volume of ice above the water surface is 1000 cu. M, what is
the total volume of the ice?
Answer:
V = 9,364 m3

Problem no. 2
A body having a specific gravity of 0.7 floats on a liquid of Gs = 0.8. The
volume of the body above the liquid surface is what percent of its total
volume?
Answer:
V = 12.5%

Problem no. 3
A stone weighs 460 N in air. When submerged in water, it weighs 300 N.
Find the volume and specific gravity of the stone.
Answer:
V = 0.0163 m3
Gs = 2.88

Problem no. 4
A piece of lead (Gs = 11.3) is tied to a 130 cc of cock whose specific
gravity is 0.25. They float just submerged of water. What is the weight of
the lead in grams?
Answer:
WL = 106.97 g

Problem no. 1
Two spheres each 1.20 m, in diameter are connected by means of short
rope. One weighs 4 kN and the other weighs 12 kN. When place in water:
a.Compute the tension in the rope.
b.Compute the depth of floatation of the 4 kN sphere.
c.Compute the volume exposed above the water surface.
