Lesson: Mathematics II

Topic: Basic Concepts of

Relations and Functions
Objectives:
 Define relations and functions
 Identify the domain, range and
graph of a relation
 Differentiate between relation and
function
 Represent relations in different
ways, namely, by a table of
coordinates, a graph or a set of
points in a Cartesian plane, a
diagram, a rule, and an equation
there corresponds

Time of the A temperature

day

Room in a house an area

A person a weight
Relation
- is any set of ordered pairs.
- the set of all first coordinates of the ordered
pairs is called the domain of the relation

- the set of all second coordinates is called the

range of the relation

Note: If one or more element of the domain is not paired with

a range, therefore the correspondence is not a relation
Example 1:

Find the domain and range

of the relation {(1,3),
(2,4), (3,5),(4, 6), (5,7)}.
Ways of Presenting a
Relation
 Table of Coordinates
 A graph or a set of points in a
Cartesian plane
 A diagram
 A rule
 An equation
Table of Coordinates

x 1 2 3 4 5

y 3 4 5 6 7

(x, y) (1,3) (2, 4) (3, 5) (4, 6) (5, 7)

For each natural number

from 1 to 5, inclusive, add 2

value
An Equation

y = x + 2, for x ε (1,2,3,4,5)
Find the domain, range and
express the relation
{(0,0),(1,1),(1,-1), (4,2), (4,-
2),(9,3), (9, -3) as:
a. Table of Coordinates
b. Diagram
c. Graph or set of points in a Cartesian plane
d. Rule
e. Equation
Function

is a relation that pairs each

element in its domain D with
exactly one element in the
range R.
Difference of Function
from Relation
 Allfunctions are relation
 Not all relations are
functions
Identify if the following correspondence is a
function, relation but not a function, or not a
relation.

As a student, how do you
correspond to the
following:
Family Friends Classmates Teachers
There's one sad truth in life I've found
While journeying east and west -
The only folks we really wound
Are those we love the best.
We flatter those we scarcely know,
We please the fleeting guest,
And deal full many a thoughtless blow
To those who love us best.

As a student, how do you
react on the rapid
changes in our climate
nowadays?
