Biografie
Marc Matthys werd geboren in 1956 te Gent. Als 10-jarige knaap speelde hij in een accordeonclub boven
een café waar toen ook Koen Crucke zich als zanger liet gelden. Matthys was de jongste en toch de beste.
Hij won het ene concours na het andere tot in Grenoble toe en behaalde al in 1964 te Parijs een Europese
titel in de jongste categorie gevolgd in 1972 te Bad Godesberg met een Europese titel in de hoogste afdeling
("hors concours") met een uitvoering van de ouverture uit Der Freischutz van C.M. von Weber.
De bekers waren niet meer te tellen.

Pianist-componist Marc Matthys neemt een aparte plaats in binnen het internationale muzieklandschap.
Na een klassieke opleiding aan het Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium van zijn geboortestad Gent, bekroond
met het Hoger Diploma Piano en Kamermuziek, naast Eerste Prijzen Contrapunt en Fuga, profileert hij zich
als een uiterst veelzijdig musicus in uiteenlopende muziekgenres zoals klassiek, jazz en pop. Zo werkte hij
samen met figuren als Frédéric Devreese, Dirk Brossé, Rudolf Werthen,Walter Boeykens, Neeme Järvi, Aga
Winska, Toots Thielemans, Eddie Daniels en Shirley Bassey. Tot op heden realiseerde hij een 20-tal Cd's
voor diverse labels.

Hij is directeur van het Conservatorium van de stad Kortrijk en sinds 1978 artistiek docent (piano en
ensemble) aan de Hogeschool Gent. Onder directeur Johan Huys stichhte hij er de jazz-afdeling. Hij
bekwam verschillende onderscheidingen waaronder de Grand Prix Humanitaire de France, werd laureaat
van wedstrijden zoals Tenuto (VRT), Europ' Jazz Contest en het Jazzconcours te Dunkerque en
concerteerde in Europa en de VSA. Zijn kwartet met o.a. fluitist Dirk De Caluwé trad ook op in het Koninklijk
Paleis ter gelegenheid van het zilveren huwelijksjubileum van Koning Boudewijn en Koningin Fabiola in
1985.
In 2000 werd hij Composer in Residence op uitnodiging
van I Fiamminghi en Radio 3 (Klara) te Antwerpen en
realiseerde hij een pianosolo Cd "Bach meets Jazz again"
met Toots Thielemans als speciale gast. ( Maestro Music
Productions-Baltic) In 2001 verscheen de DVD-Video
"Divas are Forever-L'Ultime Concert de Shirley Bassey"
met Marc Matthys als pianist (Eagle Vision-Sony Music)
en trad hij op te Warshau als pianist-componist en in duo
met de sopraan Aga Winska (1ste laureate Koningin
Elisabethwedstrijd). In 2002 werd Marc Matthys laureaat
van de Nationale Compositiewedstrijd voor Jazzthema's
van BAP-SABAM. In juni 2003 verscheen de cd :
CROSSINGS, Marc Matthys & Friends -live at Flagey,
Brussels (mmp 037) met tal van internationale solisten.
Als pianist-componist-arrangeur superviseerde hij de
laatste dubbel-cd en tournee van zangeres Jo Lemaire met wie hij tevens optrad in het federale parlement te
Brussel en in Warschau (2007).Met deze laatste was hij ook te gast op de Wereldtentoonstelling in
Zaragoza ( juli 2008).
Op 31 oktober 2003 werd zijn "Variations for Strings" uitgevoerd te Moskou tijdens het openingsconcert van
het Moscow Autumn Festival. Ditzelfde werk is geprogrammeerd voor september 2006 in de Baylor
University (Texas-USA).

 In mei 2004 werd hij uitgenodigd om in het PSK –
BOZAR te Brussel een concert te verzorgen voor het
BOIC in het kader van de Olympische Spelen.In juli
2005 volgde een uitvoering van zijn “Sad Waltz” met het
Sint-Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra in het
plaatselijke Beloselsky-Belozersky palace o.l.v. Vassily
Petrenko.In september 2005 werd hij laureaat van de
Klara Compositiewedstrijd (Sabam-prijs) in het kader
van 75 jaar VRT Radio.Deze compositie “MOZART 2006
CON ANIMA” werd inmiddels op CD opgenomen door
het trio Grumiaux en geprogrammeerd door Yuri Serov
te St-Petersburg (juli 2006).
Van zijn composities verschenen opnames met het
VRO, Het Koninklijk Filharmonisch Orkest van
Vlaanderen, Het Nationaal Orkest van België, I
Fiamminghi, L’Arco Musicale, Ensemble Walter Boeykens, Big Band Sound,celliste Viviane Spanoghe,
fluitist Peter Verhoyen, Arco Baleno en Convivium Musicum.
Marc Matthys is bestuurder-secretaris van ComaV, de Vlaamse Vereniging van componisten en maakt deel
uit van de internationale jury van Jazz Hoeilaart 2008.
