Fratres (1977/1980)
Fratres, waarschijnlijk Prts bekendste
waarin Bach weer eens zijn come back
maakt, gaat vooraf aan een serie variaties
van ieder zes maten, telkens gevolgd door
een soort paukenslag van de piano. Het
stuk, een hymne met een koraalachtige
melodie, schrijdt voort als een processie
boven een door de piano aangehouden
akkoord.

Diagramme (1964)
Diagramme is n van Prts meest
avant-gardistische stukken. Het eerste
deel (unruhig) bestaat uit een aantal series
vrije klankvelden waarvan het aantal tonen
telkens toeneemt.
langzaam uitsterft.
Het tweede deel (ruhig) begint met een
paar enkele, van elkaar gescheiden tonen.
Vervolgens ontstaat een aantal malen
een versnellende, in sterkte toenemende
reeks, gevolgd door een vertragende,
in kracht afnemende serie tonen.

Passacaglia (2003)
The passacaglia as musical form was in
the 17th century particularly popular.
In the upper voices, melodic variations
unfold above an unchanging musical
pattern in the bass. In this piece, written
by Arvo Prt in 2003 for the Hannover
International Violin Competition, the
composer clearly reaches back to the
Baroque form he so loves.
The inevitability with which the slowly
pulsating music moves towards a climax,
is oppressive.
In 2007 Prt arranged his Passacaglia,
in honour of the 60th birthday of violinist
Gidon Kremer, for one or two violins,
vibraphone and string orchestra.

Diagramme (1964)
Diagramme is one of Prts most avantgarde compositions. The first movement
(unruhig; restless) consists of a series of
free sound groups in which the number
of notes repeatedly increases. Beginning
with one single note, this leads eventually
to a final field with twelve tones. When
that number is reached, the pianist plays a
series of tone clusters, made up of all the
twelve different tones of the chromatic
scale; in the end, the sound slowly dies
away.
The second movement (ruhig; quiet)
begins with a few isolated tones. A number
of tone-series follows, increasing in both
speed and volume; thereafter a sequence
of tones, slowing down and getting
weaker. The stillness at the end of this play
of tones is striking.
Compared with the other works on
the CD, Diagramme gives considerable
freedom to the performer. Performance
instructions are very limited and the
lengths of the notes and the open spaces
between them are not specified.

Fr Alina (1976)
Fr Alina is a key work in Prts oeuvre.
In this short work he shows for the first
time his newly-created idiom, where
simplicity and tranquillity play a leading
role. It is the style for which Prt will
become renowned. A compact, vigorous
bass line, the pedal held down, serves as
the foundation for the gradual unfolding of
two slowly evolving voices: an upper voice
playing a simple tonal melody, while a
lower voice offers the notes of a triad.
It is said that Fr Alina was written for a
lonely Estonian lady living in London.
Passacaglia (2003)
De passacaglia was als muziekvorm
vooral populair in de 17de eeuw. Op
een onveranderlijk muzikaal patroon in
de bas ontwikkelen zich variaties in de
bovenstemmen.

Fratres (1977/1980)
Fratres, perhaps Prts most well-known
work, is in fact a series of variations,
preceded by a dizzying solo cadenza on
the violin. The first versions, from 1977,
were written for string quintet and for wind
quintet. Many other versions followed,
which differ sometimes substantially. The
version for violin and piano was composed
for the Salzburg Festival of 1980 and was
performed there by violinist Gidon Kremer
and his former wife, Elena Bashkirova.
A virtuosic cadenza for the violin, in
which Bach seems to come back to life,
precedes a series of variations, each
containing six measures, followed each
time by a chord on the piano sounding
like a kettledrum. The piece, a hymn with
a chorale-like melody, paces forth like a
stately procession over a chord sustained
on the piano.
The title Fratres (Brothers) seems
to refer to the monastic life, a way of
living which has much in common with
Prts withdrawn existence during his
creative crisis in the late sixties and early
seventies.
