WASHINGTON The U.S. government export credit agency says its ready
to provide financing for American companies exporting to former pariah nation Myanmar.
Since Myanmar began democratic reforms in 2012, Washington has eased
economic sanctions and U.S. companies are now looking to capitalize on
Myanmars untapped market. But trade remains comparatively small, with U.S.
exports to Myanmar totaling $145 million in 2013, against imports of $30 million.

Tell us some basic facts about yourself
My names Su Chan Tha, but I go by Steph. I
was born and raised in Myanmar and just moved
to city of Orange in Orange County for college at
Chapman University.
Where did you attend school in Myanmar?
I went to ISM (Former YIEC)
What are some of the main difficulties you
faced with the big move?
I think the biggest thing for me was not having my family around. My familys always been
extremely close-knit and not being able to just
see them all the time was hard to get used to.
Another thing that was difficult for me was the
fact that I had a lot of help around the house
back in Myanmar, so I never did my own dishes
or laundry. In college, everyone does their own
thing, so at first, it was hard to get used to the
idea of having to do everything myself.
Are you homesick?
When I was first here, I wasnt really homesick. Mostly because I was occupied with school
work and other things that were going on. I
think I started becoming homesick when I saw
my friends from back home who are in California (about three months after I got here), and I
believe that was because I suddenly got reminded
of home. And since I went back for winter break,
I miss home even more now.
Whats your major? Whats your plan after
college?
Im a Business major. After college, I plan to
head back to Myanmar. Myanmars really different now; its opening up to a lot of other countries. I dont have a specific thing that Id want to
do, but I have some ideas. I might continue doing
what my dad is doing, which is managing his
company, Legacy Music Network. Nothing is set
in stone yet but the main thing for me is to just be
part of the reform thats currently happening in
Myanmar and help it open up even more.
What kind of advice do you want to give to
the students in Myanmar who are planning to
come to school in the States?
I think the most important thing is to expect
a big change in your life. I know a lot of people
who never prepared themselves for this big step
and just couldnt handle the alternations. Once
youre here though, you just have to learn to
adapt to this new environment and the people in
it. Its easier for some people but really hard for
others. Also, college is nothing like high school;
socially or otherwise. I think its crucial to put
yourselves in situations you would never expect
yourself to be in and to try new things.Myanmar

holiday. It was such a treasure to read. This book was originally published in 1947 by Daw Ma Ma Lay (aka Daw Tin
Hlaing) following the death of her husband, Journal Kyaw
U Chit Maung. In addition to being a love story between
U Chit Maung and Daw Ma Ma Lay, the book was Daw
Ma Ma Lays tribute to her husband through her account of
their life together during the politically volatile period from
the near the end of the British rule, the war years, and the
Japanese occupation of Myanmar. Nearly 70 years after the
original publication of the book, it is still amazingly relevant
and inspiring for todays
context in Myanmar. As
Myanmar opens up and
faces many obstacles
and challenges, I strongly recommend everyone
read this book, especially
those who are working in
the journalism and media
sector. If you are unable
to obtain a copy of this
book in Burmese, it is
now available in English.
The translator, Ma Theingyi, has skillfully captured the sounds, sights,
and intent of the original
author.
The story of Journal
Kyaw U Chit Maung highlighted how one person with persistence and commitment can make a difference. U Chit
Maung, who did not have any formal education, found a
way to self-educate and significantly contribute to the anticolonial movement and also to end Japanese occupation of
Myanmar. Because he possessed a strong desire to make a
difference for Myanmars independence, he wielded great
influence with his mighty pen. So, for some of us who are
currently overwhelmed by the enormous problems and challenges Myanmar is facing today, U Chit Maungs story can
enlighten us that every generation face its own trials and
tribulations. U Chit Maungs story can inspire us that with
commitment and persistence, each of us can contribute to
rebuilding Myanmar. Today, Myanmar no longer has any
foreign colonial masters to defeat (if you belong to an ethnic
minority group within Myanmar, you may disagree with me
on this point). We have technology to facilitate collaboration and to connect to people all over the world. We have access to a vast body of knowledge based on the past 50 years
of progress and experience from others who have successfully walked the path to success. We have more advanced
tools and knowledge that we can garner to solve many of
the problems Myanmar is encountering today. All we need
is the desire and the commitment to make a positive difference to move Myanmar forward. As we face the challenges
today, we should ask ourselves, What would U Chit Maung
