I saw the Glassman at the
Burmese film festival and it was
okay.
Last year, you came to Burmese film festival. I would like
you to say something about
"Ice Poison"?
Ice Poison I walked out
after 15 minutes into the movie.
I dont like it. Both the style and
topic are done poorly. It is not
about Burma. They were speaking Chinese. There are a lot
of beautiful things in Burma to
show than just drugs and social
problems.
Tell us about your brief biography.
I was born in Rangoon. My father, Desmond Hsa is the 18th Saopha of

Lawksawk and my mother is Dr. Lily Hwang. She was the head of Pathology
at Sao San Htun Hospital in Taunggyi. I lived most of my childhood live in
Taunggyi. Following the Burmese Military Regimes push into power, our family
left Burma in order to escape incarceration and execution due to our privileged
royal status. At age 11, my family moved to the United States
Raised by Oxford educated parents, my upbringing provided me with the
cultural and intellectual exposure necessary to overcome the adversity of moving to a foreign land. I excelled in academics and sports, receiving an athletic
scholarship to play tennis at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Realizing I
had an affinity for the visual arts, I continued my education at the UCLA School
of Art, where he received his BFA.
What inspires you to become a filmmaker ?
I like to tell a compelling visual story to make people smile and think. My
affinity for urban subculture, my fierce devotion to martial arts, and my intellectual prowess has chiseled a hard-edged persona that is reflected in my
streetwise lifestyle. A filmmaker with talents and credits on both sides of the
camera, I have etched a reputation as a chameleon, earning the recognition
by the Venice locals as an iconic figure with dragon-gangster mystique.
What is your very first experience in directing?
Immediately after graduated from UCLA, 2 colleagues and myself shot a 3
minutes trailer and pitched the concepts to various film producers. We were
offered to do a feature film. I produced and started in it. This film Ghostown
was picked up later for international distribution.
How do you understand the difference between two words "Celebrity" and "Artist" ?
I could careless about the word Celebrity. I was born as a Saopha and all
eyes were on me when I was growing up. Ive been a popular figure in High
School and at University. Celebrities need other to validate their beings. An
Artist is being true to his heart and did not need other to approve his existence.
He is there to live and share.
What is your favorite movies, director and actors?
Directors - Wong Kar Wai, Wim Wenders, Jean-Luc Godard and Michelangelo Antonioni
Actors Bruce Lee, Marlon Brando and Jan-Michael Vincent.
My favorite movies are Enter the Dragon, Apocalypse Now, Until the End of
the World, White Line Fever.
Have you watched Burmese movie? What do you feel after watching
each movie? How do you think about Burmese film industry?
I grew up watching movies of Kyaw Hein. I like his acting and his films.
He has charisma and charm. Burmese movies are long, drag-on and repeat
the same theme again and again. Burmese film industry needs to catch up
with the rest of the world.

like to pick up to get the video.
I always want to tell a Los
Angles Story and LA Weekly allowed me the perfect opportunity
Ive been seeking since I was at
UCLA. All the topics are interesting to me concerning the culture
and people of the great city of
LA. Im planning to do a piece
on Burmese community in LA.
What do you think about

Burmese culture? Do you
believe art should be framed
in its own culture?

Burmese culture and art should be expose to the whole world because it
is unique and different than any other in existence today. They are based on
Buddhism and all about sharing, caring and love.
How do you think about this year Oscar award?

I dont care about Oscar at this point in my life.
Let's say if you were getting to create the new movie. What is your
priority to get it, stars power or the story of the movie?

Stars power is important to get the movie off the ground. At the end, the
story is the most important.
How do you study for the editing?
In todays world, most of the young directors edit their own films. Its extremely important to visualize the end result while youre creating, because it
will allow you to manage the schedule

time and production cost while youre
filming. Just yelling Action and
Cut doesnt make you a director. LA
Burmese Thingyan 2014 - I wanted to
create a piece that everyone, not just
Burmese, can appreciate, so that we
can show the whole world about the
wonderful Burmese culture that exists
right here in Los Angles. This was
possible because of the LA Burmese
community, especially from Dr. Phillip
& Sandi Kaw, and Henry & Noelene
Kao. They all helped and guided me
through the whole process of making
the Thingyan video. I could have not
done this without their assistance.
You have in touch with Burmese community. Can you tell us

about the strong and weak point of
Burmese community in compare to
other community.
Burmese community need to be
inclusive not exclusive. It needs to
reach out to other community and
expose the greatness of the Burmese
culture.
Do you have any plan to create
Burmese movie?
My ultimate goal is to make a Burmese movie that will win an Oscar
one day.
Most of our Burmese movies
and songs could not escape from
the copyright. Can you tell us about
how important is the copyright in
creating an art?
You can always be influenced by
other artists work and theres a proper way to reach out and collaborate
with them without having legal issue.
How do you think about Myanmar Gazette?
Myanmar Gazette is the best thing
for the Burmese Community.
Any message you would like
to tell our Burmese Community.
Always be a proud Burmese until
you die.

the NLD can become part of the next government and can play a role in the
negotiation of national reconciliation, it will gain more trust. .....
As for neighboring countries such as China, they should support Myanmar
to make the reforms carry on and take the revision of the constitution as a
step. Reducing military intervention in political life is a fundamental condition
for the country to set up a stable system.
