Renee Perrier-Combs is a living testament to the eectiveness of the Rainbow Families
biannual Family Conference.
She rst attended in 2010 and was astounded such an event existed. At the next one
in 2012, she and her partner of eight years, Karen Perrier-Combs, found a school for
their 5-year-old daughter, Amaris, a school they were previously unaware of.
They have great vendors there and we really got to gure out what was the best t
for our family, Perrier-Combs says. Its just one of the advantages of the conference.
You get such a wealth of information and theres such camaraderie, spirit and energy
there, its just a wonderful space.
The 43-year-old Louisiana native came to Washington in 1990 to go to college at
Howard University. She works by day as a supervisory social worker with Arlington
County Department of Human Services but has been involved with Rainbow Families
for three years and served on its board since last September.
This years Family Conference is slated for April 26 from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at
Georgetown Day School (4200 Davenport St., N.W.) and will feature expos, information,
networking and fellowship. Comedian Judy Gold is the guest speaker. Registration ($40
for members; $50 for non-members) is available at rainbowfamiliesdc.org. This years
theme is Creating Our Families, Building Our Community, Celebrating Our Strength.
Perrier-Combs lives with her family in Brookland. She enjoys spending time with her
wife and daughter in her free time.

Expanding our sense
of what an LGBT
family looks like
By DANA RUDOLPH
Two new, very dierent memoirs
continue to expand our sense of what an
LGBT family looks like. One is the story of a
lesbian mom struggling against her sons
anti-gay Catholic school while grappling
with her relationship to the church and
to her own mother. The other is about a
butch lesbian and her experience being
pregnantthe print version of a graphic
novel rst serialized online.
Michelle Thealls Teaching the Cat to
Sit (Gallery Books) is a beautifully crafted
tale about the power and pitfalls
of faith, family and love. Theall, the
editor-in-chief of Alaska Magazine and
an award-winning adventure and tness
writer, weaves the story of attempting
to raise her son Catholic with the story
of her own childhood and coming out.
She deftly intertwines anecdotes that
take us back to her childhood in Bible
Belt Texas and forward to her life as a
parent in Colorado, moving us through
her Catholic upbringing, sexual abuse by
a neighbor, coming out during college in
the 1980s, meeting her now-partner Jill,
and adopting their son.
The narrative begins in Colorado in
2009, when she and Jill are rst sensing
a reluctance from their priest to baptize
their son. The boy also attends the Catholic
school run by the same church, and the
family has been welcomed by the school
community. The priest, however, eventually
warns them that he is reconsidering
whether they can stay, since being gay goes
against Catholic teaching.
Despite the insult, Theall hesitates to
withdraw their son, knowing that it would
hurt her strongly Catholic mother, who
also suers from depression. Theall has
struggled her whole life for her mothers
acceptance, and their relationship nearly
ended when Theall came out to her.
Through her story, she shows us the
harmto individuals as well as entire
familiesof a view of the world in which
lesbian and gay people exist only as
sinners and deviants. While she pulls no
punches about the churchs hypocrisy
and failings, her book is far from a
condemnation of religion.
A. K. Summers Pregnant Butch: Nine
Long Months Spent in Drag (Soft Skull
Press) has an entirely dierent style
and tone: irreverent and often caustic,
with bold images that both capture the
details of everyday life and exaggerate
its incongruities. This is not a childrens
comic. The tale, rst serialized starting
in 2011 at the Web comic collective
site Act-i-vate (act-i-vate.com), is semi-
autobiographical, with the protagonist
Teek standing in for Summers.
Summers grew up in California and
Georgia, went to college in Ohio and
Illinois, and now lives in Rhode Island.
Trained as a printmaker, she is the
creator of the comic zine Negativa:
Chicagos Astute Lezbo Fantasy Mag, as
well as several short animated lms.
She was adopted herself, which gave
her an emotional longing to experience a
biological relationship to somebody, she
told me in an interview in 2011. Getting
pregnant, often seen as the ultimate
womanly act, took on dierent overtones
when she did so as a butch woman, however.
Pregnant Butch, she said, is about my
attempts to hold on to my butch self and
also to allow myself to be transformed by
the process [of pregnancy], and where that
could occur and be positive.
Summers explores what it means to be
butch, the lack of positive role models,
and how she and her partner negotiated
their relationship and roles as they
headed toward parenthood. She charts
her changing interactions with friends
and neighbors as they encountered the
dissonance of her masculine gender
expression and her pregnant belly.
Summers writes in her introduction that
she thinks there has been a shift in the
10 years since she was pregnant. Young
queers are now less likely to use the term
butch. Nevertheless, Summers felt it
was important to capture her experience,
both to make the unseen visible and
to document a point in time before the
enormous positive shift in public attitudes
toward gay people in the last few years.

The importance of
co-parenting agreements
By MEAGHAN E. HEARN
I recently met with a married couple
that separated about a year ago and are
preparing to nalize their separation
with ling for divorce here in the District.
They worked together throughout
their yearlong separation to help their
children ages 8 and 5 adjust to what
they call their new normal. The couples
relationship is amicable and they make a
concerted eort to reach joint decisions
on parenting issues by considering
what is in the best interest of their
children. They are fully aware, though,
that as their children get older and life
moves forward there will be times when
tensions mount between them and their
relationship to each other as parents
will become strained. Their goal now is
to do whatever they can to minimize the
possibility of court involvement in any
future parental disputes.
Many non-married parents straight
and gay - are turning to co-parenting
agreements to achieve this goal. A co-
parenting agreement is an agreement
between parents that can set forth
anything from the moral values the
parents wish to instill in their child to
agreed upon forms of discipline the
parents will or will not use with their child.
An eective agreement is drafted in a
way that sets forth guidelines for parents
to follow that will assist in avoiding and
resolving conicts as parents encounter
the inevitable changes life brings. A well
thought out and drafted agreement
should always provide parents with
methods to resolve conicts without
court intervention.
Co-parenting agreements may be
entered when your child is born or after
you and your co-parent have separated
or divorced. It goes without saying,
however, that having these important
discussions and drafting an agreement
before conict arises in your relationship
with your childs other parent is often
easier than nding that common ground
when parents are already at odds with
each other.
The beauty of co-parenting agreements
is that they can include whatever parents
believe is important in raising their
child. Agreements typically include
clauses detailing which parent will make
important decisions regarding their
childs health, education, and welfare, the
nancial obligations of each parent to the
child, and physical custody or visitation
schedules that the parents will follow
during the school year and summer
months. A co-parenting agreement can
even include provisions on religious
up-bringing, extracurricular activities,
geographical restrictions related to a
parents residence, parameters on where
a parent may or may not travel with
the child, or even when a parent can
introduce their child to a new signicant
other.
Part of what makes co-parenting
agreements so appealing is that they
are adaptable to change. An eective co-
parenting agreement will set forth factors
that parents should consider when
making decisions related to their child, as
well as the specic process the parents
will follow when conict arises between
them. These agreements can also include
clauses requiring parents to participate
in mediation or arbitration when they
are unable to reach an agreement as to
what is in the best interest of their child.
Some co-parenting agreements even give
nal decision making authority to a third
party such as a social worker, therapist
or similar healthcare provider, when
parents are simply unable to reach a
decision themselves.
In same-sex relationships, these
agreements can be of paramount
importance and can often be critical in
establishing a non-biological parents
relationship to his or her child. If one or
both parents reside in a state that does
not recognize same-sex marriage or
does not permit same-sex second parent
adoptions, these agreements can provide
a layer of protection to the non-biological
parent by explicitly setting forth the
parents rights and obligations to his or
her non-biological child. Although a co-
parenting agreement is not legally binding
in these states, the current nation-wide
judicial shift in recognizing the rights of
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered
persons indicates that judges would
now be more willing to consider these
agreements as evidence of not only the
non-biological parents relationship to
the child, but also the parents shared
goals in raising their child.
The importance of developing a
parenting plan and memorializing it in
a legally enforceable document before
conict arises between you and your co-
parent cannot be overstated. It will not
only allow you and your co-parent to
develop a greater understanding of your
respective roles and duties as they relate
to your child, but it will help your family -
as a whole - navigate your new normal.

Out Idol runner-up
promises evening of
songs and storytelling
By KEITH LORIA
Conventional wisdom has it that the
holidays are not a good time to come out.
Crystal Bowersox didnt quite do it
around a Christmas Day family meal,
but she denitely didnt follow the usual
path either.
When Bowersox released her Christmas
album last December, one of the songs was
called Coming Out For Christmas and
the singer came out as bisexual during her
touting of the record.
I think its important that people in the
public eye be public about where they
stand and who they are because it will give
kids around the world the condence to be
who they are, she says. Its not good for
anyone to hate any aspect of themselves
and I think it sets a good example for young
people to love themselves.
America was introduced to Bowersox in
2010 as a contestant on American Idol,
a single mother with dreadlocks who
had a voice that crossed the territories of
blues, country, folk and rock. Although she
nished second to Lee DeWyze, her star
was on the rise.
Before Idol, I had never done any
excessive touring. I did some local gigs
in my hometown and I was happy doing
what I was doing, she says. When I had
my son, I realized I wasnt doing it on the
level I needed to be doing it on to provide a
stable income and life for my child.
Historically, American Idol has
elevated a number of members of the
LGBT community to fame, including
former runners-up Clay Aiken (season
two) and Adam Lambert (season eight)
but like Bowersox, none came out until
after their time on the show was over. Still,
their braveness paved the way for the
shows rst openly gay contestant, MK
Nobilette, to compete and make it to the
top 10 this season.
The show changes your life in every
possible way. Theres no other way to be
heard by 30 million people, Bowersox says.
The show gave me everything. It gave me
a sounding board, industry cred and taught
me what I was capable of as a performer.
I learned a lot and now I can take what I
learned and go out there and do what I do.
The American Idol fave makes her
Wolf Trap debut on Wednesday. Bowersox
will play tunes off her critically acclaimed
debut album Farmers Daughter, her
latest All That For This and an EP she
released quietly pre-Idol called Once
Upon a Time. She also plans some possible
candidates for an upcoming EP. She likes to
sing them live to gauge audience reaction.
It will be an evening of songs and
storytelling, she says. I really like to interact
with my audience and my show is like an
on-going conversation with them. During
the show people are calling things out and
were telling jokes and having a lot of fun.
I just hope people come, are entertained
and leave feeling good.
One of the things she loves most about a
concert date is seeing the audience singing
along with her something she never
imagined would happen.
Its nice to have recognition in
something you created and have a crowd
know every single word and sing them back
to you, she says. Thats the true reward of
being a singer/songwriter and performer.
Bowersox will also surprise one lucky
audience member with a trip to join her
on stage, and after the show, she will make
herself available for photos and autographs
to every single person who wants one.
I love to say hello and meet people,
she says. I get a lot of feedback from
people after the show and I just want them
to be honest and help me know whats
working for my fans and what isnt.
Bowersox is also attached to the musical,
Always Patsy Cline, which has been
rumored to make it to Broadway sometime
in the next year. The singer plays the famous
title character and croons the best of Cline.
Shes fullling a dream shes had since
she was little. In rst grade, Bowersox
played Suzy Snowake in a school
production and from there on in, wanted
to perform for a living.
I always loved to sing and dance but
didnt know I could make money doing it,
she says. Eventually, I learned I didnt have
to go and get a job at Burger King, I could
get people to pay for this service. I havent
done much else since then. I am very lucky
that I could do what I love for a living.

Osteria Morina,
Bluejacket and Agua 301
lend air to S.E.
By JONATHAN HOWARD
The Navy Yard is fast becoming more than
just a destination for baseball acionados;
foodies now have several reasons to ock
to the waterfront. Restaurants like Osteria
Morina (301 Water St., S.E. Suite 109),
Bluejacket and the Arsenal (300 Tingey St.,
S.E.) and Agua 301 (301 Water St., S.E.) are all
hoping to help redene this neighborhood
and make it a haven for food lovers and
baseball lovers alike.
New Yorks Michael White brings Osteria
Morina to D.C. He also brings his hearty
Italian menu to a grandiose 4,200-square
foot space that is both modern and rustic
in design. Executive Chef Matthew Adler
doesnt hesitate to ll the large space with
dishes full of bold avors; like the Cappelleti,
which is trufed ricotta ravioli, melted butter
and prosciutto; the Stracotta sangiovese
braised short ribs, whipped potatoes, and
gremolata; and the Vitello 12-ounce
veal rib chop with pancetta cream from the
restaurants wood burning grill are also big
enough dishes to ll your stomach as well as
the expansive room.
Bluejacket, a nickname for U.S. sailors, is
a brand new well-appointed brewery down
at the Navy Yard where Beer Director Greg
Engert and Brewmaster Megan Parisi will
be creating numerous concoctions. The
beer is a solid mix with a variety of styles
that will keep beer connoisseurs happy as
well as some approachable, quick drinking
beers. Examples include Scarecrow a
delicate saison with a dry nish; the Panther
a hop forward lager; and James & the
Giant a Belgian ale with local peaches.
Accompanying restaurant the Arsenal, a
nod to the buildings former function as a
munitions factory, will constantly feature
20 rotating Bluejacket brews and ve
Bluejacket cask ales. Kyle Bailey and Tiffany
MacIssac are the husband-and-wife team
that will be overseeing the menu at the
Arsenal. The focus will be on dishes that pair
well with the beer, including pasta made in
house from the spent grain.
Agua 301 is one of the recent additions to
the Navy Yard, and is a 150-seat restaurant
from owners Amanda and Stephen Briggs.
They selected Chef Antonio Burrell as the
head chef; Burrell helped open El Centro
D.F. on 14th Street. The idea behind the
cuisine at Agua 301 is to take contemporary
Mexican cuisine and infuse it with modern
air. Burrell will take the traditional avor
proles and Mexican ingredients and tweak
them with experimental ingredients and
avor combinations.
When you rst glance at the menu,
you notice that while tacos appear, items
like burritos and fajitas are absent. There
are, however, three kinds of guacamole,
including guacamole de jaiba, which
contains jumbo lump crabmeat and fresh
corn; the correct Spanish word to describe
this creation is riquismo. Of the seven types
of tacos, the pork belly al pastor with crispy
pork belly and a spicy habanero salsa is the
one that caught my eye, but I do love heat.
The carnitas taco with shredded pork and
habanero salsa, as well as the hongas taco
with sauted mushrooms, squash, chilies
and goat cheese also looked delectable.
One could simply spend the evening dining
on tacos; I thought about it.
But I couldnt just focus on the tacos
when my eyes jumped down the menu to
see mahi mahi, and these beautiful words
were followed by one glorious word
bacon. May I please have six? Add an
order of the short rib mole chichillo, the
bistec al parilla with tomato salsita and
corn casserole, and a few orders of yucca
frita and that should sufce. If it doesnt I
will simply return to the beginning of the
menu for the white sh ceviche and the
chicken tortilla soup. Did I mention mahi
mahi and bacon on the same plate?
Its rare for me to lose track of food I
have eaten in a night, let alone attack a
menu out of order, but this night was an
exception. Just the thought of some of
the inventive takes on some of the dishes
served at Agua 301 is delightful. Sadly,
not all dishes are home runs, with some
of them being a bit salty. If Agua 301 isnt
what you are craving but youre looking
for a place to dine in the Navy Yard, dont
fret Osteria Morina and the Arsenal at
Bluejacket are still excellent options. Will
the Navy Yard soon become the next
Penn Quarter or 14th Street Corridor, with
a new place to eat on every corner? At this
rate, anything is possible.

Lesbian coming-of-age story
moving, effective
Sometimes, you feel so adrift.
Unmoored, unanchored, you feel as
though you ride each wave alone, emotions
and events washing over you until you cant
weather the storm any longer and you need
an anchor. Thats when you reach for family
or God.
But what if both were denied to
you? In Teaching the Cat to Sit, Michelle
Theall shares her story of standing up
instead of standing still.
Al Theall and his wife were sure their
second child, born in 1966, would be a
boy but surprise! they got another
daughter. Later, they were even more
astounded that their second girl was so
different from the rst one: unlike her older,
popular, outgoing sister, Michelle grew to
be athletic, bullheaded and introverted;
in fact, aside from the cat, her only friend
was a neighbor girl whose parents had
scandalously been divorced.
Divorce, of course, was against the
teachings of the Catholic Church, the
religion that Thealls mother strictly followed.
She was reluctant to even let her daughter
play at the Crandalls house, but reasoned
that Theall needed one friend.
That bond ended abruptly when the girls
father molested Theall.
In high school, Theall had an Evangelical
Christian friend, but the girls mother
thought Theall was a lesbian, and put an
end to the relationship. That hurt, because
Theall herself didnt yet realize her sexuality.
After a sweet and almost-accidental love
affair with another woman while at college,
Theall examined her sexual preferences and
felt deeply ashamed. Catholicism taught
that being gay was a sin against God. Her
parents would not accept her as a lesbian.
She tried to be heterosexual, but that wasnt
who she was. So upon graduation from
Texas Tech, she moved to Colorado where
she chose long-term celibacy and started
re-building a relationship with her parents.
Then, after a surprising (and awkward)
introduction, Theall fell in love. When she
and Jill started their family, she fell in love
again with a baby whod had a rough start
in life. Theyd hoped to raise their child in
Thealls Catholic faith.
But the church wasnt having it.
Despite its inherent sadness, Teaching
is hard to put down because author
Michelle Theall is a rst-rate storyteller and
knows how to keep a reader wanting more.
Half of it is about her battle with the Catholic
Church for recognition of her partner and
their son and, eventually, their search for an
acceptable (and accepting) religion. The
other half is the memoir of her tumultuous
relationship with her parents and her journey
to understanding, both of them and herself.
The book works because of its
deliberateness and its ultimately
empowering message of truth to self.
For that, and for the great biography it is,
Teaching the Cat to Sit is a must-read,
especially for those who can relate.

Four fun, fuel-friendly rides
By JOE PHILLIPS
Looking for eco cred? Theres plenty in
auto showrooms this spring: hybrids, plug-
ins, electric vehicles, diesels, even traditional
combustion engines with start-stop systems
and other fuel-saving technology. Many are
as fun as they are functional.
PRIUS V
$27,000
MPG: 44 city/40 highway
0-to-60 mph: 10.3 seconds
Eking out an impressive 55 mpg or
even more, depending on how you drive
the Prius sedan remains the most popular
hybrid. Even Bradley Cooper drives one.
Now theres the larger Prius V wagon,
which sacrices a bit of fuel economy but
offers 60 percent more cargo room. And
this doesnt include the two gloveboxes
and huge center console. Like the sedan,
the wagon is pokey but practical, with
large dashboard controls, easy-to-use
shift lever and standard rearview camera.
Theres little sizzle here, thanks to the boxy
exterior and acres of hard plastic trim. But
theres lots of tech gear: Bing search-engine
functionality, Pandora radio and the latest
info for weather, trafc and local fuel prices.
And the panoramic moonroof with electric
sunshades is a great touch.
VW JETTA HYBRID
$25,000
MPG: 42 city/48 highway
0-to-60 mph: 7.8 seconds
For a little less cash, theres a lot more dash
with the Jetta Hybrid, especially compared
to the Prius V. The downside: theres a third
less cargo room. Still, hybrid drivers looking
for a thrill will like the Jettas tight cornering,
taut braking and strong turbo (this is one of
the quickest hybrids out there). Along with
a slick rear spoiler, theres keyless entry/
ignition, heated seats/mirrors and some
savvy safety options like a stolen-vehicle
locator and geo-fencing (which allows
parents to set limits for teenage drivers).
While the ve-inch nav display is tiny, its also
one of the easiest to use.
BMW 328d xDrive
$37,000
MPG: 32 city/45 highway
0-to-60 mph: 6.8 seconds
BMWs beloved 3 Series gets a diesel
this year. The 328d is smoother and sportier
than the Jetta Hybrid, though it also costs
$12,000 more. Clean diesels are becoming
more popular, and this one with a 180-
hp, four-cylinder turbo is extremely fuel-
efcient. There are gobs of glam amenities
including a heated steering wheel and
power liftgate as well as blind-spot
monitoring, lane-departure warning and
even a driver drowsiness monitor. For racing
acionados, the macho M Sport package
adds a rmer suspension, form-tting seats
and ashy 18-inch alloys.
DODGE RAM 2500 DIESEL
$31,000
MPG: 15 city/20 highway
0-to-60 mph: 8.4 seconds
Consumer Reports just named the Ram
the best truck of the year and the diesel
model is even better with plenty of pick
up for a pickup. Choice of either two- or four-
door models, both with almost sedan-like
handling. The plush, Lexus-like cabin has
heated seats (front and back), Bluetooch,
sunroof and large 8.4-inch touchscreen
infotainment system with 10-speaker stereo.
Theres also a rearview camera and power-
adjustable pedals to accommodate drivers
of all sizes. Sure, gas mileage is far from a
Prius. But when only a heavy-duty hauler will
do, this is a good green option.

New construction mostly
limited to rentals
By SUE GOODHART
The spring residential market awakens as
of March and ushers in the strongest quar-
ter of any year. The cold and snow are fur-
ther behind us and days are growing longer.
Homeowners are waking up and discover-
ing that in their winter slumber the house
has perhaps grown too small for comfort-
able living or perhaps another found their
home too big or too much work as they
grow another year older.
Renters will generally have done their tax-
es and reevaluated the costs of not owning
and are ready to throw their iron in the re.
For us here at the Goodhart Group, it is an
exciting time as we meet so many people
and learn of their needs and goals and work
out ways to assist them to achieve them.
In meeting each client we nd most peo-
ple love where they live. Prying them out of
the area they plopped into when they ar-
rived in town can be tough. They like their
grocery store or the local deli and they have
developed roots.
Often, however, the type of home they
are yearning for may not be available in the
neighborhood they love. So showing them
new, interesting and just as lovable areas
becomes our primary job. There is resis-
tance at rst and even tears on moving day
but we have found that buyers snuggle into
their new homes and neighborhoods and
grow as many roots as they had in the last
home. Mainly its because we ll each home
with our love, our families, our friends, our
pets and our stuff. I hate to be trite but
home really is where the heart is. Where we
bring what we love and like a big beating
heart we learn to love whatever radiates
around it.
The 2014 spring market promises to
be an interesting one. The stock market
growth in 2013 has given buyers fatter wal-
lets and stronger reserves. The desire to
move investments out of cash and into real
estate has become stronger. The problem?
Inventory. New construction in most areas
has been limited to apartment buildings.
People are staying in their homes longer.
We shall see if the pace of sales can match
last spring.
From the bottom of our hearts, wed
like to thank you for your referrals. If you or
anyone you know would like to learn more
about local real estate, please contact us
at 202-507-7800 or homes@thegoodhart-
group.com or visit us online at thegood-
hartgroup.com.

Local duo grows EatWellDC
to ve restaurant-bars,
farm-to-table food source
By MARK LEE
When David Winer recounts the
launches of the ve EatWellDC restaurant
group establishments he doesnt note
openings by year. He identies how long
each has been in operation, as if doting
on the ages of offspring.
Its a tting quirk for the serial creator of
affection-winning restaurant-bars with a wel-
coming family feel extended to employ-
ees and patrons alike.
Winer, originally from the Boston area,
enjoys 30 years in the industry rst honing
his hospitality skills at a Back Bay restaurant.
His employer partnered in Winers inaugural
Miami Beach restaurant in 1993.
Josh Hahn, Winers nephew growing up
a block away in Newton, Mass., worked at
an upscale gourmet carryout and caterer
while in high school. Completing a business
degree at Emory University in Atlanta, Hahn
came to D.C. 12 years ago to join the staff at
his uncles rst local venture. Grillsh restau-
rant, opened in 1996 at 21st and M streets
near Dupont Circle, has remained popular
for seafood specialties and American fare in
a relaxed setting.
Featuring elevated ceilings, wood tex-
tures, warm colors and eclectic accents,
the casual environment and cuisine would
serve as a model for subsequent eateries.
Logan Tavern, opened in 2003 off a deso-
late-at-the-time 14th Street corridor, was
followed by now-named Commissary in
2005. Both are prominent xtures on the
1400 block of P St., N.W.
We were busy from opening day at Lo-
gan Tavern, recalls Hahn, so busy that I had
to splash water on my face every so often. It
was the right concept at the right time, he
says, noting that the venue quickly won the
loyalty of locals eager for dining and social-
izing spots during the areas then-nascent
re-emergence. We were able to give the
neighborhood something it wanted, af-
rms Winer, and it helped the area grow.
Everyone thought I put together some-
thing magical, Winer says, but it was just
something lacking and appreciated.
The neighborhood needed so many
things, Hahn adds, we helped accom-
modate the desire for a consistently reliable
and value-oriented product that contrib-
uted to a sense of community.
The duo, with partner Tony Oquendo,
next looked north to open The Heights in
2008, at the commercial corner of 14th and
Kenyon streets in Columbia Heights. An ex-
pansive outdoor patio and light-lled inte-
rior pub-tavern ambience have made it an
area mainstay.
This spring will mark the second anniver-
sary for the newest addition to the EatWell-
DC family of restaurants. Usually ddling
with a concept for several months, Winer
gured the evolving plethora of 14th Street
dining options suggested something very
special, very unique. The Pig, at 1320 14th
St., offers a distinctive nose-to-tail pork-
centric menu with eccentric fare, says
Hahn. Its a completely different concept.
Several years ago Winer, frustrated by the
lack of reliable availability of locally sourced
organic produce, found a 13-acre farm for
sale in La Plata, Md., an hour outside the city.
EatWell Natural Farm, initially a hard-labor-
of-love, now supplies in-season vegetables,
greens, tomatoes, herbs, orchard fruits, vine
berries, and beehive honey. A new green-
house extends the growing season and
produce variety.
Its taken signicant investment to grow
the farm, Winer points out, but were com-
mitted to sourcing produce from our farm
and other sustainable growers. He notes
that proteins are ethically raised, free-range
and organic.
Employing nearly 200, our staff become
like family, Winer says, and represent an
incredible cross-section, noting many have
been with the company nearly 10 years or
longer. By expanding, notes Hahn, we
can provide opportunities to grow into
new leadership positions while serving the
community.
Winer, helming the enterprise with
Hahn handling managerial details,
adds, Were always thinking about the
next opportunity.
