Work Based Learning

Gabriela Turrubiartes

My work based learning was acquired at National Health Care Corporation located in
Bluffton SC. I was there on November and December from 6:45 am through 2:00 pm every
other day during the week and did 40+ hours. The first days I went there I shadowed a CNA and
basically learned as I observed. After I got comfortable, I got assigned to residents and was
accountable for their care.
The first thing I did was to wake up the residents and help them get washed up and to the
toilet. I either gave them a bed bath or got them to the shower and helped. Oral care was then
provided to either dentures or teeth. During this their bed linen would be either changed or fixed.
After I helped them get dressed up, I would take them to the break room. While there I helped
pass out the breakfast to the residents. After that I would take them to either the toilet or the
living room and do some activities with them. Some activities include; nail care, karaoke,
painting, or going for a walk. We then as a class would go to the faculty break room at 11 am
and have our lunch break till 11:30 am. We would return back and get the residents clean and
ready for lunch. We would help pass out trays that corresponded to their diet. Later we would do
activities again or change their clothing or briefs. At around 1:30 pm we would report to our
CNA and inform them about our residents. During these days I really learned a lot and gained
experience that can be used later in my future work field.
