Kate Upton

Kate Upton is a 52-year-old spontaneous and creative woman. She

has been married for 20 years to a real estate agent and has one
child; a girl called Angel-May. The family lives in a house in Seaforth
and Angel-May is attending a nearby private school called Redlands
in Cremorne, her favourite subject is IST with Mr Banjit. Kate was
raised on her parents piggery farm in Matcham, Central Coast and
grew up with a deep love for nature and art. Kate is currently a selfemployed fine artist who works from home and conveys strong
environmental messages in her paintings. Self-employment is when
an individual works for himself or herself instead of working for an
employer (a person who hires employees), this means they are a
sole trader or in a partnership (Investopedia, n.d.).
Her style of painting is based strongly on impressionism of nature
although sometime paints abstract pieces (Boddy-Evans, 2015). The
industry sector of a fine artist is secondary industry because people
in this industry turn raw materials in finished or semi-finished
products. The skills a fine artist like herself needs are; the ability to
generate and convey ideas in art, the ability to experiment outside
of their comfort zone, time management and organisational skills,
marketing skills and the ability to produce art to a high standard
(Fox, 2015).
On average Kate paints 42 hours a week (Open Univesities, 2015), 7
hours a day, 5 days a week, and sometimes up to 7 hours during
the weekend. Kate paints with little to no breaks from 8am to 3pm
and enjoys her afternoon with her family in order to have a good
work life balance (achieving the right amount of time devoted to
work and for personal life). Many artists choose how long and how
often they work, constantly changing their work habits to suit their
situations, wants and needs, as this is the advantage of being selfemployed (City-Data, 2010). On the weekend Kate markets herself
to businesses to invest in her art and negotiates her latest art with
Michael Reid; an art gallery and her dealer stationed in Elizabeth
bay, Sydney (Micheal Reid, 2015).
The duties and tasks that Kate needs to be a fine artist are; meeting
deadlines, developing specific pieces of work in response to a brief
or commission, project planning and budgeting, writing funding
applications, managing tax and self-employment issues and also
liaising with contacts, gallery owners, curators and other artists.
