WHERE DID WE START?

We need to start with something indefinable
The indefinable objects in geometry are points,
lines, and planes.
We have defined and labeled:

Line

Segment
Endpoint
Rays

Today we are going to define, label, and measure

angles.

ANGLES
An angle is two rays
that share a common
endpoint, provided
that the rays do not lie
on the same line.
The common endpoint
is called the vertex.
The two rays are
called the sides.

NAMING/LABELING ANGLES
The vertex is Point A.
Ray AT is one side.
Ray AP is the other
side.
Can be named in
three ways

TAP
PAT
A

Point A must be alone

or in the middle.

NAMING/LABELING ANGLES

Can you use one letter name for the angles in the
diagram to the right? Left?

PRACTICE

MEASURING ANGLES
Size of an angle is the
smallest amount of
turning to rotate one
ray to over the other.
We measure the side
of angles with
degrees.
One full circle is 360o.
In geometry, angles
are between 0o and
180o.

MEASURING ANGLES
Degree measure of
an angle is written as
a lowercase m.
So ZAP has a degree
measure of 43o.
mZAP = 43o

MEASURING ANGLES
We use protractors to measure and draw angles
(not construct them!)
Remember to read the correct scale!
