MATHEMATICS CLASS V-D

POINT

A. A point represents an exact location.

B. It does not have any size.
C. We represent a point with the help of a dot and name it with a
capital letter.
.A This is point A
LINE

A. A line is a collection of points extending endlessly in both the

directions.
B. A line has no beginning or an end.
C. A line is represented by
D. A B
Point A and Point B are two points on the line.
We call it line AB and represent it as AB or BA.
LINE SEGMENT

A. A line segment is a part of a line.

B. It has two end points.
C. It cannot be extended in any direction.
D. A line segment is represented by
E. Points M and N are two endpoints of the line
M N
segment MN.
We write it as MN or NM
RAY

A. A ray is a part of the line.

B. It starts from a point ( that is one end ) and can
extend indefinitely from the other end.
C. A ray is represented by
D. Ray PQ is written as PQ

NAMING AN ANGLE

In the given figure, the marked angle can be written as:

OB or OA
IMPORTANT POINTS

1. Vertex- The point where two rays meet is known as the

vertex.
O is the vertex
2. Arms of the angle- The two rays forming the angle are called
as the arms of the angle.
OA and OB are the arms of the- OB
The unit for measuring angles is degrees.
The instrument used for measuring angles is called “
PROTRACTOR”.

degrees.
OBTUSE ANGLE

An obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees but less than 180

degrees.
RIGHT ANGLE

An angle with a measure of 90 degrees is known as a right

angle.
STRAIGHT ANGLE

An angle with a measure of 180 degrees is known as a

straight angle. It is a straight line.
