Lesson Summary:
This lesson is to allow students to be creative while using technology to create holiday e cards to send to their
parents. Students will build the structure of their e card with their knowledge of storytelling to demonstrate
their central message to their parents. The illustrations for their e cards will be created using clipart from
Microsoft word students will take photos of each other using classroom I pads and with assistance from the
classroom instructor they will upload the photos to their completed e cards. The classroom instructor will send
their cards to their parents email address once complete.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson will take 90 minutes total split into two 45 minuet work days.
Commentary:
To start the lesson we will talk about what and who is important to us during the holiday seasons to get their
minds moving. I anticipate that the hook to lesson will be that the students are making something for
someone that is important to them their parents. Making this e card will give the students the opportunity to
create a special gift for their parents for the holidays. I think that searching for clip art may be a little difficult
for the students when it comes to actually attaching the art to the e card. The students will write their e cards
with pencils and paper prior to typing the cards on the computer so that will make it allot easier for the

students.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
The teacher will explain that most commonly we often send ecards (electronic greetings) instead of paper
cards. Discuss internet safety prior to completing the assignment. Tell students that the purpose of this
assignment is to make holiday cards for their parents to receive electronically. The teacher will then gather the
students and began a conversation of what is important to the students during the holiday season? What does
the holidays mean to them for example? Receiving gifts, giving gifts, family, special foods they like to eat and
or special activates/memories they do during the holidays. Once we have gathered ideas for about 20 minutes
we will get out paper and pencils and began to write 5 sentences combined to make a cohesive paragraph to
insert in their e card this should take an additional 25 minutes. The purpose of writing before the students type
is that this will better prepare the students to make their e cards the next day.

Day 2:
During the first 30 minutes of the lesson today the students will sit down to the classroom computers and using
Microsoft word with assistance from the classroom teacher the students will type their written 5 sentence
paragraph on the computer. Using the ideas that we previously discussed the day before students will search
for clip art pictures to add illustrations to their e cards with assistance from the teacher. Students will add
clipart photos that make sense with their favorite holiday memories for example, their favorite food or holiday
memory sledding, snowman building, making cookies any clipart that makes sense and has a personal
meaning to the student. During the last 15 minutes of the holiday e card assignment students will use the
camera on the class room iPad and they will get a partner pairs of two students per iPad and students will take
photos of each other that will be attached to the e card by the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher will
email the holiday card to the parents but will also print a finished copy for the student to view as well.

Pre-Assessment:
Prior to designing the e cards and writing the cards on paper the teacher and the students will discuss the
purpose of holiday cards and the meaning behind them. The teacher will also discuss the purpose of using the
computer to send a card the benefits of the e card. Students will answer what they like to do on the computer of
their iPads for example, playing games, face timing family, taking pictures this will help the student remember
how familiar they actually are with communicating via the computer.
Scoring Guidelines:

The classroom teacher will use their judgement to determine how well the students were able to create their
paragraph and convey their feelings on to their electronic greeting card. The students will be required to have
illustrations in the form of clip art at a 1 photo minimum. This will demonstrate the students knowledge of
the structure of a book.
Post-Assessment:
Once the lesson is complete the students should know what Microsoft word is and understand how to type in
order to recreate what they wrote on paper to the computer to create sentences for a book or greeting card.
Students will have the knowledge of how to make their very own illustrations using clip art to create a book or
in this case a greeting card. Students will have the knowledge of what an electronic greeting card is. They will
have gained additional per social skills they will have the opportunity to work together to be creative while
becoming card designers.
Scoring Guidelines:
Students will be scored on the finished greeting card (e card) four parts that equal 25% each. First students will
be required to have at least 5 written sentences on paper cohesively. Second students must successfully transfer
those 5 sentences to make their paragraph words onto their e card. Third students will be required to have at
least on piece of clip art to make up their cards illustration. Lastly Students will need to be able to work
together successfully to take their photos that will be added to their greeting cards. Successfully completing all
three pieces of this assignment will result in 100% for the students grade.

Differentiated Instructional Support

If there are students struggling with ideas for their cards students can get ideas from their peers. Students can
also gain knowledge from books in the classroom that will be available to all students for successful
completion of the assignment. In the classroom this assignment can be altered for students with special needs
they will have the opportunity to use assistive technology for example, iPads that include the speak to write
feature to avoid the handwritten portion of the assignment if necessary because that may be a difficult part of
the assignment for some students.

the keyboard students should practice typing on the computer or laptop whatever they have available. Also
parents would be asked to assist children with identifying them with holiday clip art in the program Microsoft

greeting card ideas.

Interdisciplinary Connections

their holiday experiences from their peers. This will allow students to be informed of all the other holiday
