Introduction:

Childrens behaviours are made of complex factors and emotions. It is very difficult to
understand. Many theorists have multiple opinions on how to understand them or manage
those emotions especially in a classroom (Kay, J. 2006). I believe that those emotions are
mostly affected by their social environment, because children at the preoperational stage tend
to copy others, mostly their peers, quite a lot. Those children are also affected by their
families, in a way or another.

Positive Classroom Management:

To understand the reason the child behaves in a certain way, one must know about the childs
background information, personality as well as their relationships. It is well know that the
child behaviour is influenced by both his nature and nurture combined as well as the childs
personal needs. (Kay, J. 2006). I think that managing the classroom positively is majorly the
teachers responsibility as she has more control over it than children. I believe that having a
positive classroom environment would help both the teacher and the students during the
lesson. For example, the lesson would flow easily, the teacher might only face minor
challenges and the students would learn easier.

Management Strategies Ive Observed:

Misbehaviour management:
The teacher keeps an eye on the student's behaviour. When a single student starts
misbehaving, the teacher easily asks him or her to stop. However, when a group of students
start misbehaving, the teacher rings a bell to stop them. The bell is loud enough to grasp the
attention of all of the students therefore they stop misbehaving and pay attention to the
teacher. I have seen other teachers ways of stopping misbehaviour and it usually includes
either yelling and screaming or punishment or both. According to Albert Bandura, children
learn by watching others (Learning Theories and Models Summaries (in Plain English),
2015). Therefore, the teacher has to stop the misbehaviour before other children start copying
it as well. I believe that this strategy is very effective because the teacher can manages to
control the students easily and she is able to eliminate misbehaviour.
Feedback:
The teacher praised the students frequently to
motivate them and make them proud of what
they do. The students who she praised are the
ones who participated in the lesson, the ones
who answered correctly, the ones who tried to
answer, the ones who show her their work, and
many others. She often showcases their work in
nice ways. For example, in the art area, the
teacher hangs their artworks on an large board to
make them proud of what they drew. I have
been to another teachers class and she did

something similar. The other teacher mostly praised the students who answered correctly and
the ones who were outstanding though. According to Bandura, reinforcement such as
compliments and praising motivated the students. I think that this strategy is great because
the students are extrinsically motivated when they get praised, which leads them to work
harder in class.
Environment management
The teacher makes the classroom environment as calm and home-like as she can. She makes
sure that all the students are comfortable and safe in their class. During my observation, I
noticed that many other teachers do not care if the students feel threatened in their classes or
if there is something is making them uncomfortable. Skinner believed that improving the
behaviour of the students will improve the classroom environment (McLeod, 2015). I believe
that the teacher worked by that theory. I, also, believe in that theory as well. I have seen that
during my teaching practice as well, because whenever a group of students calmed down, the
feeling of the class would become quiet and comfortable. On the other hand, they all act tense
and uncomfortable when a group of students are being noisy.
Punishment
The teacher punished the students who misbehaved a lot, especially, during the circle area.
The teacher punishes them but not letting them in their favorite area. She keeps them out of
the area for a maximum of 5 minutes. While comparing with a classmate, I was told that her
teacher punished her students for the entire class. Skinner defined punishment as an response
to decrease the probability of an action to appear in the future (2015). I think that the
teachers strategy is really good because the duration isnt too long but it isnt too short either.
Moreover, the students stop misbehaving after they are punished.
Transition
The teacher asks the students to form two lines to
move them from the class to the playground, the
lines are divided by gender. The teacher walks in
front of them and they follow her, still forming a
line. Dewey believed that the students can work
as instructed, if the are instructed correctly
(2015). I think that this strategy can be improved
by preparing the students before transitioning.
She can also improve it by singing while moving to avoid noise. (Ertel, N. D. 2005)
Conclusion
In my opinion, the teachers strategy are very useful and they help her manage the
classroom. I think those strategies are very positive and they make lesson easily. I would to
use them in the future.
