Mr. Martin/Mr.

Pattersons Class
Week of February 2-5
Welcome to February!
Permission slips and notices for this years Winter Fun Day on 2/26 went home last
week. Please make sure that the slips have been signed and returned.
This weeks Second Step lesson focuses on emotion management. Students will learn
the importance of focusing attention on their bodies to find clues about their
emotions and the importance of identifying emotions.
Math: Math Club continues this week. Most groups are working on fact practice and
counting.
We will continue our new unit, Addition and Subtraction within 200 and Word
Problems within 100. This week we will be focusing on using number lines to add
and subtract using multiples of tens and some ones. Students will learn two
strategies - one for addition and one for subtraction to make problems easier.
Students will make the next ten with addition, so instead of solving 39 + 44, they
would change it to 40 + 43. For subtraction students will learn about a concept
called constant difference, which is when you add the same amount to each number
to make the problem easier. Instead of 45 - 29 the problem could be 46 - 30.
Spelling: Recognizing ending consonant clusters. Listen for the two sounds at the
end of some words.
Reading: We are focused on comprehension! This week please spend extra time
reviewing what your children are reading at home. Make sure they are reading books
that they can read, and when they are done have them retell the story.
Writing: Back to Basics! Well be spending some time solidifying some common
mistakes in second grade writing - capital letters and punctuation!
Science: Students will continue to work on their own pasta car inventions this week.
In addition to learning how to be an inventor, students are also practicing an
important life skill, perseverance, when things dont go as planned!
Social Studies: None for now as we focus on Science.
