Week of May 11-15

Here are a few upcoming events that you may want to mark on your calendar.
There is a Teacher Workshop Day on May 22 so there will be no school for students.
Memorial Day is on Monday May 25, so again, there will be no school.
Second Grades Portfolio Night will be on Wednesday May 27 from 4:00-6:00. Please join
us if you can, even if it is only for a few minutes!
The Art Show is also tentatively scheduled for the night of Wednesday May 27.

Math: We continue to work on addition and subtraction through 200 as well as word problems
through 100. Our focus is on subtraction this week. Students will learn how to unbundle 100
to get ten tens and review how to unbundle a ten to get ten ones. Students have been taught
to ask themselves: Do I have enough? before beginning to subtract. We will also learn how
to subtract when there is a zero in the tens place.!

Spelling: This weeks focus is on working with plurals. Please remind your child to practice
for Fridays test.
Reading: In groups, we are continuing to work on visualization, making predictions,
identifying the main idea as well as the supporting details. Some of the books that we are
reading are: Animals Say, Buster Goes to the Library, The Creature of Cassidys Creek, and
Spanish Omelette.
Writing: We will be completing the end of the year writing prompt for grade 2. We will also
write about Insects, Insects, Everywhere!
Science: We will finish learning about healthy habits by mid-week. Students will continue to
track their personal health goals, however. We will then start a new unit entitled, Changes.
Students will learn about Matter. We will also discuss solids, liquids, and gas this week.
Social Studies: None for now.
Vocabulary: The vocabulary words that we will work with this week include: essential,
potential, and isolation.
