Food Drive
During a recent visit to the Giving Tree, our
4th graders noticed that many shelves were
empty. We want to help fill those shelves with
the items that are most in need. The first
graders at Bay Harbor just did a food drive
and brought in over 400 items! WAY TO GO 1st
Graders! The fourth graders would like to
continue the momentum started by the 1st
graders and do a whole school food drive.
The items in need are:
Peanut Butter
Canned Meat (Tuna or chicken)
Boxed Potatoes, Rice, and Stuffing
Canned Pasta
Our goal is to reach 1,ooo food items from
Monday, February 29th to Friday, March 4th.
If we reach our goal, the entire school will
have a surprise incentive.

What We Are Learning

Literacy
We continue to focus on informational texts. We are
continuing to learn about the non-fiction text features.
Over the past two weeks we have learned about the
table of contents, heading, bold print, captions, glossary,
index, diagrams, and labels.
Writers Workshop
We are well into our new informational writing unit
from Lucy Calkins.
We learned that good writers go back and re-read to
add or subtract information.
We are also learning how to use a checklist. A few of
the things on the checklist include, creating an attention
grabbing beginning, writing facts and using labels,
having an ending, writing one important idea on a page.
Math
We are continuing to practice adding and subtracting
to 20.
To begin the unit, students worked on missing addend
equations: 8+__=15. Kids used various strategies to solve
these problems: math mountains, counting on, and
make a ten.
The type of problem students are still finding tricky are
start unknown subtraction problems (Mrs. Lohff had
some cookies, she ate 7 and now she has 5 left. How
many did she have at the start? __-7=5
Science
We are continuing to identify solids, liquids and gasses.
Students are having a blast with learning the
properties and how particles are arranged and.
We are now digging in with some more experiments to
show how matter can change!
Field Trip
We will be going to see the Skippyjon Jones show at the
Weidner Center on March 3rd. Chaperones have been
notified. Cant wait to share this experience with the
kiddos!
