Preface
지알이 공부를 하면서 이 재미없는 단어들을 어떻게 조금이라도 더 재밌게 외워볼까 해서 어원을
찾기 시작했습니다. 잘 외워지지 않는 단어들도 어원을 알고 나면 오랫동안 기억할 수 있더군요.
‘정리한 분량이 꽤 되는군’이라는 생각을 하게 되었을 때, 다른 사람들에게도 도움이 될 수
있을거라는 생각도 함께 들더군요. 그래서 하나의 파일로 만들기 시작했지요. 제대로 찾지 않았던
부분들은 추가해서 찾았지만, 너무 귀찮아서 대충 대충 찾은 부분도 많습니다. 그리고 개인적인 경험
때문에 안면이 있던 단어들은 안 찾으려 하다가 이왕 만드는 거 찾자란 생각에 추가를 했습니다.
그래서 나온 것이 ‘Korea Gre5.0 Etymology Ver. 1.0’입니다. 그리고 이번에 기출대전과
최근cbt기출단어 들을 추가해서 ‘Vocabulary for GRE – Etymology2.0’을 만들었습니다. 10월
시험을 치고 나서 바로 정리해서 올려야지 했던게 이제야 끝이 났네요. 게을러서 ^^;. 정신없이 만든
파일이라, 오타와 오류가 여전히 많습니다(이거 찾는 재미라도 즐기시라구.- -;)
지난번에 올렸던 ‘Korea Gre 5.0 - Etymology Ver. 1.0’에 각 파트별로 꽤 많은 수정을 해서
‘Vocabulary for GRE – Etymology2.0’이란 이름을 달게 되었습니다. Part 3는 예전에 ‘그레’님이
2002년말경에 올려주신 파일에 제가 정리한 것을 추가하였습니다. 연락할 길이 없어 허락을 받질
못했습니다. 혹시 보게 되신다면 양해를 바랍니다. 부록에 있는 그리스 로마 신화로부터 파생된
단어는 배준호 님의 홈에서 퍼온것인데 연락이 닿질 않네요. 넓은 아량을 바랍니다.

아거스는 100개의 눈을 가진 괴물로, 그 중 몇 개가 잠을
별 이름 : 금성은 비너스(Venus), 화성은 마즈(Mars),목성 자도 나머지는 깨어 있었다 함. 그러나 헤라 여신의
주피터(Jupiter) 명령으로 제우스의 연인인 이오를 감시하던 중, 헤르메스
신에게 처치 당함. 헤르메스신은 이 100개의 눈을
아킬레스건 (Achilles' Heel): 어떤 사람이 가진 약점이나 헤라에게 넘겨 주었고, 여신은 공작새의 꼬리에 이 눈들을
다치기 쉬운 부분. 붙였다 함.
펠레우스와의 교합으로 아킬레스를 얻은 바다의 여신
테티스는 아들을 불멸의 존재로 만들기 위해 저승의 아틀란타의 경주(Atlanta's race): 술수나 묘책을 써서 이길
스틱스 강(Styx)에 담그었다 함. 그러나 그녀의 손이 잡고 수 있는 경기.
있던 발꿈치 부분은 스틱스의 강물이 닿지 않았고, 결국 이아우스와 클리메네의 딸인 아틀란타는 달리기의
트로이 전쟁 당시 그리스 군 최고의 용사였던 아킬레스는 명수였다. 많은 구혼자들이 그녀의 미모를 탐내 몰려
파리스가 쏜 화살에 발꿈치를 맞고 죽었다 함. 들었으나, 한 가지 조건이 있었으니, 자신과 달리기를 해
지면 목숨을 잃는다는 것이었다. 수많은 구혼자들이 희생
당한 후, 히포메네스라는 청년이 아프로디테 여신에게서
아도니스 (Adonis): 뛰어나게 아름다운 청년. 얻은 황금사과를 경주 도중 땅에 던졌고, 아틀란타가 그걸
목동이었던 아도니스는 사랑의 여신인 아프로디테의 주으려고 멈춘 사이, 그는 결승점에 골인함으로써 그녀의
사랑을 받았지만, 그녀의 불길한 꿈에도 불구하고 사냥에 사랑을 얻었다.
나갔다가 멧돼지의 뿔에 찔려 죽었음. 슬픔에 잠긴 여신은
그의 시체 위에 신들의 음료인 넥타르(Nectar)를 뿌렸고, 그
자리에서 아네모네꽃이 피어났다 함. 아틀라스(Atlas): 체격이 크고 건장한 사람, 또는 지도나
지도책.
이아페투스와 클리메네의 아들로, 거인족과 제우스신의
이지스(Aegis): 후원이나 후견. 전쟁에서 거인족 편을 들었다가 패전 당한 후,
염소가죽으로 만든 가슴막이로, 제우스의 소유였다가 제우스신으로부터 하늘을 받치고 있으라는 벌을 받음.
아테나 여신에게 넘어감. 트로이 전쟁과 방랑으로 20년
만에 이타카 섬으로 돌아온 오디세우스는 아테나 여신이 1636년, 메카토르가 "아틀라스: 세계의 지리학적 묘사"라는
쳐 든 이지스의 힘으로 그의 아내 페넬로페를 괴롭혀 온 제목의 지도책을 펴 냈고, 표지에는 아틀라스가 지구를
구혼자들을 모두 처치하고 왕권을 되찾음. 짊어지고 있는 그림이 나와 있었다. 그 이후로 아틀라스는
지도류를 일컫는 말이 되었다.
아마존(Amazon): 체격이 크고, 건장하고, 호전적인 여성. 바카날리아(Bacchanalia): 음주와 광적인 흥분으로
전설 속의 여인국으로, 남자아기가 태어나면 밖에 내놓아 어지러운 파티나 회합.
죽게 만들거나 불구로 만들었다 함. 뛰어난 전사였던 바커스는 포도주의 신인 디오니소스의 라틴명.
아마존의 여인들은 활을 잘 쏘기 위해 오른쪽 가슴을 바카날리아는 그 신을 기리는 축제로서, 광란과 흥분을 그
잘랐고, 사냥과 승마에 능했다 함. 특징으로 하고 있었다.

히드라의 머리를 가진(hydra-headed): 한 문제를 해결하면 벨러로폰의 편지(Letter of Bellerophon): 전달한 사람에게
다른 문제가 발생하는 난처한 상황을 나타내는 말. 재앙을 불러오는 편지.
헤라클레스가 처치한, 머리가 아홉 달린 괴물. 머리를 하나 시시푸스의 손자인 벨러로폰은 실수로 살인을 범한 후
자르면 그 자리에서 두개가 생겨났다 함. 헤라클레스는 다른 나라에 피신해 있었다. 그런데 그를 보호해 준
조타인 이올라우스를 시켜 머리가 잘린 부분을 불로 프뢰투스왕의 왕비가 그를 짝사랑하다가 받아들여지지
지지게 하며 다른 머리들을 잘라냄으로써 이 괴물을 않자 남편에게 그가 자신을 유혹하려 했다고 고자질했다.
처치했다 함. 왕은 자기 집에 온 손님을 해칠 수 없다는 율법 때문에
그를 직접 죽이지 못하고 그 대신, '이 편지를 들고 간
마취(hypnotism): 잠의 신인 '힙노스'로부터 유래. 힙노스는 청년을 죽이라'는 내용이 적힌 편지를 들려 장인인
밤의 여신인 닉스의 아들로, 죽음의 신인 타나토스와 형제. 이오바테스에게 보냈다.
이카루스의 모험(Icarian adventure): 실패나 파멸로 끝날 리누스의 노래(Linus song): 애처롭고 구슬픈 가락.
무모하고 야심적인 시도. 외아그루스와 뮤즈 칼리오페의 아들인 리누스는 뛰어난
이카루스는 다이달로스의 아들로, 아버지가 만들어 준 음악가로서, 죽은 영웅들을 기리는 슬픈 노래들을 많이
날개를 달고 하늘을 날다가 태양에 너무 가까이 가는 지었다.
바람에 날개를 붙인 밀랍이 녹아 바다에 추락.
연꽃 먹는 사람(Lotus-eater): 몽상가, 또는 현실 감각이
펠롭스의 상아 어깨(Ivory shoulder of Pelops): 한 사람의 부족한 사람.
본성을 보여주는 측면. 토로이 전쟁 후 이타카로 돌아오던 오디세우스 일행은
탄탈루스는 신들을 초대해 향연을 벌였으나 음식이 폭풍을 만나 북아프리카의 어느 해안에 도착했는데, 그
모자라자 아들인 펠롭스를 죽여 국을 끓였고, 이를 모른 곳에 사는 사람들은 친절하고 평화로웠지만 뭔가를 해
데메테르 여신은 펠롭스의 어깨를 먹어 버렸다. 제우스 보겠다는 목적의식이 전혀 없이 그저 빈들거리며
신은 헤르메스와 클로토를 시켜 펠롭스를 되살려 냈으나, 매일매일을 보내고 있었다. 게다가 그들의 주식인 연꽃
데메테르 여신이 먹어버린 어깨는 어쩔 수 없었다. 그러자 열매를 먹자 오디세우스의 부하들 역시 고향으로
여신은 그에게 상아로 된 어깨를 선물했다. 돌아가려던 당초의 계획을 까맣게 잊고 그저 몽상에 빠져
나날을 보냈다. 결국 오디세우스는 강제로 부하들을 끌고
나와 다시 귀향길에 올라야 했다.
야누스의 얼굴을 가진(Janus-faced): 부정직하고 속이기
잘하는, 이중적인. 3월(March): 로마인들은 추운 겨울이 지나고 다시 전쟁에
야누스는 로마 신화에서 시작, 끝, 입구, 출구, 다리의 신. 나갈 수 있는 3월을 "마르티우스(Martius)"라고 불렀는데,
출입구의 신인 그는 흔히 각각 앞과 뒤를 보는 두 얼굴로 그것은 물론 군신(軍神)인 '마르스(Mars)'에서 유래한
그려진다. 명칭이었다.
군(軍)의, 호전적인(martial): 군대나 군사, 전쟁과 관련된.
유쾌한(Jovial): 주피터의 또 다른 이름(Jove)으로부터 유래. 로마 신화의 군신 마르스(Mars)의 이름에서 유래한 말.
목성의 영향 아래 태어난 사람들의 그 별로부터 기쁨과
행복을 얻는다고 믿어졌다. 멘토어(mentor): 지도자, 스승, 선생. 현명하고 믿을 만한
의논 상대, 영향력 있는 연장의 지지자나 후원자.
주노 같은(Junoesque): 당당한 아름다움을 가진. 오디세우스가 트로이 전쟁에 나갈 때, 이타카의 통치와
주노는 헤라 여신의 라틴명으로, 키가 크고 당당한 미인을 아들 텔레마커스의 교육을 맡긴 믿음직한 친구의 이름.

트로이 전쟁 당시 거짓말로 목마를 성 안에 들이게 해
프로크러스테스는 고대 희랍의 여인숙 주인 겸 강도. 트로이의 파멸을 초래한 그리스인. 시논은 트로이인들에게,
손님이 침대에 비해 너무 짧으면 다리를 잡아빼 키를 그리스인들이 자기를 죽여 신들에게 바치려 한다면서,
늘이고, 너무 길면 다리를 절단했다. 후에 그 곳을 지나던 아테나 여신에게 바치는 헌물(獻物)인 저 목마를 성 안에
테세우스가 그를 처치. 들여놓으면 트로이는 절대로 패하지 않을 거라고
말함으로써 결국 트로이의 멸망에 결정적인 역할을 했다.
프로메테우스의(Promethean): 혁신적인, 대담하게 창조적인.
거인족의 하나로, 인류를 위해 천상의 불을 훔쳐다 주었을 사이렌(siren): 아름답고 매혹적인 여인. '사이렌의 노래'는
뿐 아니라 농사 짓는 법, 약초를 이용해 병을 치료하는 법, 유혹적인 것.
숫자 사용법 등을 가르쳤다 함. 그는 술수가 뛰어났을 뿐 트로이 전쟁 후 고향으로 돌아가던 오디세우스는 아름다운
아니라 아주 창의적이었다. 노래로 선원들을 유인, 절벽에 배가 부딪혀 죽게 만드는
새처럼 생긴 여인들을 보았다. 오디세우스는 부하들의
변화무쌍한(Protean): 아주 잘 변하는, 시시각각 다른. 귀에 솜을 틀어막고, 자신은 스스로의 몸을 기둥에
프로테우스는 다른 바다의 신들과 마찬가지로 변신에 묶음으로써 그들의 유혹을 이겨냈다.
뛰어났는데, 트로이 전쟁에서 돌아가던 메넬라우스가
고향인 스파르타로 돌아갈 방도를 묻기 위해 그를 붙잡자 시시푸스의 과업(Sisyphean task): 쉽게 끝나지 않아 일하는
그는 사자, 뱀, 표범, 곰, 물, 나무로 변신하며 그를 피하려 사람을 애 먹이는 힘든 일.
했다. 바람의 신 이올러스의 아들인 시시푸스는 꾀가 많고
영리한 사람이었다. 그는 제우스신이 에기나(Aegina)라는
큰 뱀(python): 남미산의 거대한 뱀, 또는 괴물이나 요괴. 처녀를 유혹하려 하자 그녀의 아버지에게 그들의 소재를
아폴로가 자신의 신전을 마련하기 위해 파르나소스산 알려주는 대신 코린트에 샘을 파 달라고 요구했다.
기슭에 살던 용을 처치하고 그 시체를 버린 곳인 "Pytho(: 제우스는 에기나의 아버지가 지나갈 때까지 바위로 변신해
'나는 썩는다'라는 뜻)"의 지명에서 유래. 숨어 있었다.

목소리가 큰(stentorian): 스텐토르(Stentor)는 트로이 전쟁 트로이의 목마(Trojan horse): 겉으로는 괜찮아 보이지만
당시 그리스군의 전령(傳令)으로, 목소리가 엄청 커서 오십 실제로는 이 편을 해치거나 파멸에 이르게 하는 존재.
명의 음량을 합한 것 같았다고 한다. 10년 동안 계속된 트로이 전쟁이 끝날 기미를 안 보이자
오디세우스를 비롯한 그리스 연합군 측은 거대한 목마를
음침한(stygian): 저승을 감아 돌며 흐르는 스틱스(Styx)강의 만들어 트로이에 선물한 후 귀향길에 올랐다. 하지만 사실
이름으로부터 유래하여, 지하 세계처럼 어둡고 무서운 그 목마 속에는 그리스 병사들이 숨어 있었고, 그리스
곳을 나타내는 말. 군은 근처 섬 뒤에 정박한 채 성문이 열리길 기다리고
있는 참이었다. 이 사실을 모른 트로이 군은 그리스군의
감질나게 하다(tantalize): 상대가 탐내는 것을 주는 척 첩자인 시논의 말을 듣고 그 목마를 성 안에 들여놓았고,
했다가 도로 빼앗아 감으로써 애를 태우다. 밤이 깊은 후 목마에서 나온 그리스 병사들은 성문을 열고
연합군을 맞아들여 트로이를 패망시켰다.
제우스신의 아들인 탄탈루스는 신들을 만찬에 초대한 후
음식이 모자라자 아들 펠롭스를 죽여 상에 내놓았다. 딸 경모(敬慕)하다(venerate): 숭배하다, 사랑하다.
페르세포네를 잃고 슬픔으로 정신이 나간 데메테르 여신을 로마 신화에서 사랑의 여신인 비너스의 이름에서 유래한
빼고는 모든 신들이 금새 이 무서운 행위를 눈치 챘고, 말.
펠롭스의 사지를 다시 붙여 되살려 주었다.

탄탈루스는 사후 하데스에서 무서운 벌을 받게 되는데,
그것은 작은 연못 속에 선 채 물을 마시려 하면 그 물이 독(venom): '미약(媚藥)'을 가리키는 라틴어 'venenum'에서
얼른 저만치 물러가는 것과, 머리 위에 대롱거리는 맛있는 유래. 'venenum'은 물론 비너스의 이름에서 나온 말. 미약이
과일을 보고 먹으려 하면 금새 저 위로 올라가 버리는 나쁜 목적에 쓰이는 일이 적지 않았기에 오늘날의 뜻, 즉
바람에 끊임없이 갈증과 배고픔에 시달리는 것이었다. '독약'으로 뜻이 전이된 듯.
