Completing the Square

Section 6-4
The Basics
• The quadratic equation 250 = (13 + x)² contains
one side that is a perfect square, (13 + x)².
• This allows us to solve it by taking the square root
of each side.
• When an equation does not contain a perfect
square, you may create a perfect square by
applying a process called completing the square.
In a perfect square, there is a relationship
between the coefficient of the middle term
and the constant term.
A Specific Case

(x + 9)² = x² + 18x + 81

9 = ½ (18)  9² = 81
General Case

(x + c)² = x² + 2cx +c²

C = ½ (2c)  c²
To complete the square in the expression below, you
would use the same process.
• Using the pattern of coefficients, take half the
coefficient of the linear term and square it.

X² - 8x + ?

(- 8 )²  (-4)² or 16
2
And answer is…(drum roll)

X² - 8x + 16 = (x -4)²

(Gasp) A perfect square!! Ain’t that

something!!!
