Chapter 13
Electrons and Chemical Bonding

Chemical Bonding Joining of atoms to form new substances

Chemical Bond Interaction that holds atoms or ions together

Electron organization Start by finding the atomic #-represent electrons

Electrons are organized in specific energy levels
Protons and neutrons remain in nucleus
Draw Energy levels 1st level-2 Draw
2nd level-8
3rd level- 8/18

Valence electrons Electrons that are found in the outermost shell of an

(outer electrons) atom and that determines the atom's chemical
properties
(groups)
Valence Electrons and Periodic Groups 1 & 2- Same number as group number
Table Groups 3-12- nothing relates, they will have 1 or 2
Groups 13-18- Ten fewer valence than group number

Bonding Not all atoms bond the same way.

The valence electrons determine whether the atom will
form bonds.
Ex: Noble gases (grp 18) normally do not bond because
they have a filled outer energy level.
