INTEGRATED LIVING SKILLS

2002

INTRODUCTION

Integrated Living Skills is a technological based subject in Form I to Form 3. This subject legislates based on the National Education Policies (NATIONAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY). It is planned to improve the national productivity through community involvement and human resources in the most productive ways based on current technology in line with the policy and needs of the country.

This subject is part of the educational efforts in upgrading the technological skills and entrepreneurship. It provides useful and functional skills where the pupils can apply in the most productive way to adapt technological changes in their daily lives. Pupils are nurtured with positive attitudes to appreciate the high-quality work, innovative in developing projects, confidence and

independence in their efforts. It emphasizes on the simple hands-on activities involving assembling, building, repairs and maintenance. Besides that sewing, planting, breeding livestocks, accounts management and business are also being stressed on.

Moral values, positive attitudes and good working culture are instilled and integrated during the practical activities of this subject.

AIMS

The aims of Integrated Living Skills subject are to produce independent, confident, creative, initiative and knowledgeable in technology-know-how in facing the rapid changes of technology in everyday lives.

OBJECTIVES

Integrated Living Skills Curricular enables the pupils:

1.

To encourage self improvement, being creative and innovative in designing and producing products out of variable sources such as wood, plywood and composite.

2.

To be conscious of surrounding matters and getting the ideas from multiple sources in designing and producing products.

3.

To carry out do-it-yourself tasks, simple repairs and maintenance of electrical and pumping work in everyday lives.

4.

To produce simple article using the sewing machine.

5.

To produce ornamental plants for beautifying certain areas.

6.

To choose the right equipments, tools and materials and use it with the correct technique.

7.

To identify the importance of business, its development in future with k-economy characteristics in local and international business.

8.

To identify the challenges and the entrepreneurs success and to evaluate their potential in entrepreneurship.

9.

To explain the main factor in production, its relation to the demand and production processes as well as calculation of cost.

10.

To collect, process and documented the information systematically and using it wisely when making decisions of choosing the right design and producing projects.

11.

To follow the rules and inculcate good and safe working culture.

ORGANIZATION CONTENT

The content of this subject is adapted following the learning topic that consist of a few learning units. The learning units are defined based topics and activities.

This subject is divided into two sections which are Core and Alternatives. The Core Section consisting of one learning component which is Designing and Technical Skills. The Alternatives section consists of four sections which are Technical Skills, Home Economics, Agricultural, Commerce and

Entrepreneurship. Pupils are required to learn all the components in Core Section and to choose only one component out of four sections in Alternatives Section.

The descriptions of the components and the learning units are as follow:

CORE

Design and Technology This field prepares knowledge and basic technology skill that enables the pupils to form and produce creative and innovative product. The product that produced can function effectively both in place of work and at home. This field consists of technique, operation, manufacturing processes that involve activities such as assembling, maintenance and repairing in electrical, electronic and plumbing work. Pupils who are exposed to technical drawing, usage of various construction materials and skill in cooking and sewing are able to manage the place of staying and gardening.

Technical Skills

This technical skills include learning unit that enables pupils enhance the knowledge in technical drawings, electricity and electronic. Through technical drawing, pupils are able to produce drawing projects. Pupils are also able to apply the electrical knowledge and electronic in their daily life.

This area also provides pupils with the early stages of knowledge in basic electro mechanical and four-stroke single cylinder engine. Thus the pupils can compare the difference between electro mechanical system and mechanical system besides enabling them to the engine maintenance work easily. Business unit and entrepreneurship provides knowledge to pupils that enable them to explore business opportunities or entrepreneurship that can be involved in this area.

Home Economics

Home Economics field provide pupil with knowledge and skills about food and nutrition, dish management, clothing and stitching.

Pupil were provided with knowledge on diet and election menu balance to plan work and produce cooking as local cake, batter, cake and biscuit and main course and incidental. Students also knowledgeable in the selection of clothing style and produce article and clothing. Business Unit and Entrepreneurship provides knowledge to pupil to enable them to explore deeply business opportunities or

entrepreneurship.

This area also enables pupil to practice moral values in daily life. With knowledge and skill obtain through these skill can raise students interest to plunge in the field of profession.

Agriculture

Agriculture emphasizes on three main topics which are Planting of Vegetables and Landscape. Pupils will acquire knowledge and practical skills related to preparing compost, planting crops, breeding pets and domestic fish as well as landscaping. Pupils are exposed to basic commerce and entrepreneurship in agriculture. Pupils are nurtured with values such as loving, patience, hardworking, dedicated, creative, productive and environmental friendly.

Commerce and Entrepreneurship

This topic prepares the students with the knowledge of business practice an entrepreneurship which involve business and management ethics, business documents, record keeping, production, consumerism,

marketing and bookkeeping. The aims of this topic are to integrate the values and behavior such as independent, confident, initiative and competitive. The students are exposed indirectly to the methods of searching and use the business opportunities wisely.
