Reminder: Zero net force means zero acceleration. Zero acceleration is evidence of zero net force

Net force

FORMULAE:

F = ma F = Force (Newton) m = mass (kg) a = acceleration (ms-2)

E.g

1. A gardener pushes a lawnmower of mass 30 kg with a force of 150 N at Air Traffic Controller an angle of 40 to the surface of the field. Calculate the force pushing the Busy airport have many aircraft lawnmower forward. 2. A student walks a distance of 50 m along a straight line on a field. He turns to the left by angle of 30 and walks a further 25 m. ( Scale 1 mm : 1 m ) (a) Draw a line to represent the total displacement of the student. (b) Determine the magnitude of the total displacement of the student.

landing or taking off every minute. Air traffic controllers are responsible for guiding pilots to their destinations. Using an understanding of vectors, aor-traffic controllers determine the proper speed and direction of aircraft by taking into account the velocity of the wind, path of the aircraft and local aircraft.

SOLVING PROBLEM :

1. During a tennis serve, a 57g ball accelerated from rest to 30 ms-1 in 7.0 s. Determine the average
net force acting on the ball

2. What is the average force required of the brakes in a 1200 kg car in order for it to come to rest
from 60 kmh-1 in a distance of 150 m.

3. When traveling at 100 kmh-1 car has to overcome a drag force due to air resistance at 800 N. If the
car a mass of 900 kg, determine the average force that the motor needs to apply its to accelerate at 2.0 ms-2.

4. A car of mass 1200 kg was moving at a velocity of 30 ms-1 when the driver stepped on the brakes.
It finally came to a stop after traveling through a distance of 50 m. What is the magnitude of the braking force applied?

5. A hawker pushes a tank of water with a horizontal force of 45 N. The total mass of the trolley and
water tank is equal to 90 kg. Calculate ; (i) The total frictional force if the hawker moves with uniform velocity of 5 ms-1 (ii) The acceleration of the hawker if the total frictional force is equal to 30 N. 6. 7.
