THERE were furious calls for the Northern Ireland Executive to upgrade infrastructure yesterday as the clean-up got underway following some of the worst flash flooding in recent times. On Wednesday evening, aerial routes in Belfast became impassable and homes were destroyed because of flood water. Yesterday NI Water said it was on high alert and had helped with the clean-up of 158 properties which had been flooded with sewage.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood announced that householders affected could apply for a 1,000 payment. But the UUP TUV and Tories , called for the Executive to take firm action to prevent further flooding. UUP MLA Michael McGimpsey and TUV leader Jim Allister said the drainage system must be upgraded while Northern Ireland Conservative representative Bill Manwaring called on Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy to stand up to his Executive colleagues.
