LESSON PLAN

Topic, class, and level Introduction to Polynomials, Grade 9__

Objectives. (What are you trying to do in this lesson?)

1. Review and introduce some terms when working with polynomials
2. Introduce how to add and subtract polynomials
3. Use manipulative toolalgebra tiles to help students get/gain a better understanding of
how to do the adding and subtracting of polynomials
4. Students will practice adding and subtracting polynomials with algebra tiles
Understandings. (What do you want students to know and be able to do at the end of this
lesson?)

1. Students will be able to understand and identify different types of polynomials
2. Students will be able to understand and do the basic operations of polynomials (adding
and subtracting)

Knowledge Outcomes. (What content knowledge do you want your students to gain as a result
of this lesson? Please refer to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.)

A-APR.1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely,
they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add,
subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Assessment. (How will you check for student achievement and understanding?)

Homework, classwork (algebra tiles exercise)
Instructional Approach. (Describe activities, allotted time, and closure)

1. (5 10 min.) Weekend highlights: On Monday morning, it might be good to slowly move
to the new unit, new topic. Thus, all students will share what they did over the weekend.
2. (15 min.) Introduction to some terms when working with polynomials. The teacher passes
out the handouts (see the attachment), and students follow the teacher to take notes.
Constant (e.g.

);
Monomial (e.g.

);
Coefficient (e.g. the coefficient of

is 3);
Degree of a variable in a monomial
(e.g.

);
Degree of a monomial (e.g.

);
Polynomial (a monomial or a sum of monomials. The monomials in a polynomial are
called the terms of the polynomials e.g.

);
Binomial (composed by two terms, e.g.

);
Trinomial (composed by three terms, e.g.

);
Degree of a polynomial (the greatest of the degrees of its terms after it has been
simplified, e.g.

)
Standard form of a polynomial (the terms arranged in order of decreasing degree of
one of the variables, e.g.

)
3. (10-15 min.) With four students in a group: the teacher passes out the algebra tiles and
worksheet (see attachments) to each student. The teacher will lead students to represent
polynomials by using algebra tiles. The teacher goes around to check each groups work.
a. Sample questions could be: 2x + 3; x
2
+ 3x + 5; -3x
2
+ 2x 8, etc.
4. (10-15 min.) Adding and subtracting of polynomialsuse algebra tiles to do the
operations and to represent the final answers. The teacher will go around to check each
groups work. The teacher will decide how many questions will be practiced based on
students understanding.
a. Sample questions could be: (3x + 7) + (x - 4); (-2x + 4) + (6x + 2); (2x
2
x + 3) +
(x
2
+ 3x - 1), etc.
5. Assign homework due next time.
Skills to be emphasized.

1. Identify the terms involving in polynomials (e.g. degree of a polynomial, monomial,
binomial, trinomial, etc.)
2. Do the operation of adding and subtracting through algebra tiles

Materials needed.

24 packets of algebra tiles and worksheets
24 handouts

Sponge activity (to soak up extra time).
