Project $ecription
Long Span Project 1 !LSP1#
Client is to develop a state-ofthe-art exhibition facility to attract major automotive and Aerospatiale exhibitions to Melbourne.
The facility requires providing approximately x!"##sqm column %ree areas for planning $exibility. These t%o exhibition areas are
to be lin&ed and serviced through a '#m %ide permanent circulation (one. Circulation (ones mean the passages through %hich
facilitate seamless people movement around the exhibits %ithin the building merging %ith vie%ing platforms along the periphery
and also entry and exit points. The structure needs to be exposed as a feature - to be consistent %ith the client)s desire for a strong
visual presence that %ould emphasise the innovative technical orientation of the events and exhibitions. *xhibition spaces must be
column free but columns may be provided along the circulation (one and vie%ing platforms leaving a minimum of #m spacing
bet%een them along the circulation (one. The structural scheme needs to be developed to be elegant and e+cient. The roof
material needs to be translucent light %eight membrane type. ,tructural height shall vary ranging from #m-#m. .e %ish to have
the most outstanding structural scheme for the roof and building envelope to be included in the submission %ith all structural
elements to be exposed to vie%.
Long Span Project 2 !LSP2#
The city of Melbourne is to develop an all %eather multi-purpose sporting venue to cater for cric&et/ rugby and athletics.
The facility requires seating capacity of approximately ""/### people and a transparent dome roof. The exposed structure is
consistent %ith the client)s desire for a modern and elegant visual presence of the structural scheme that %ould emphasise a city in
progress. The structural scheme needs to be developed to have an elegant and light-%eight appearance. The roof material needs to
be transparent light %eight membrane.
Long Span Project 3 !LSP3#
The 0lan for Melbourne recognises that ne% communities 1in current gro%th areas2 need a futuristic Community Centre to become
the hub %hich fosters harmony/ equity and tolerance. This requires a Community Centre that %ill be $exible enough to cater for a

The proposed :otel development/ on a hectare land/ has -# levels above ground %ith a maximum height of ##. The average $oor
area4per $oor is approximately '!"#sqm %hich gives the total $oor area of ";x'!"#sqm. <loor plates can have di=erent $oor areas
1as long as the total area is the same2 and not necessarily in same geometric shape.
The structure has a gla(ed fa>ade to all faces. 0roposed structural scheme shall ensure minimum loss of tenable $oor area/ due to
vertical load resisting elements 1columns/ shear %alls and core %alls2/ shall not exceed '#? of $oor area. @ateral stability may also
be provided by the cross-bracing expressed on the building exterior. A three $oor atrium needs to be created %ithin the to%er foyer
to accommodate reception areas for visitors including %ater features and a rain forest setting %hich requires a transfer structure for
the columns supporting upper $oors. 0lan area of the atrium shall not exceed 9#? of the foot print of the ground $oor. A signature
restaurant is to be placed at the top of the to%er. .e %ish to have most innovative structural scheme included in the submission
%ith preliminary si(es of structural elements.
&ig'-rie Project 2
A mixed occupancy state-of the-art -# level to%er is to be developed by a corporate giant under the theme A%or&ing from homeB.
0roposed to%er has an average $oor area of 9##sqm and total area of ";x9##sqm. The structure has mixed occupancy %here
part of the total $oor area shall serve as residential areas and the other remaining area as the o+ces. 3t is up to the design
consortium to propose the most appropriate and cost e+cient housing to o+ce $oor area distribution. 7esigner should ensure other
lifestyle facilities for employees and their families/ such as shopping/ recreational and community needs. To maintain the planning
$exibility/ the structure is to be developed %ithout internal columns. The to%er shall have strategically positioned core shafts
comprised of lift shafts/ stair %ell and services/ %hich cater for functionality and structural stability. 0roposed structural scheme shall
ensure minimum loss of tenable $oor area/ due to vertical load resisting elements 1columns/ shear %alls and core %alls2/ %hich shall
not exceed '"? of $oor area. 3ts maximum height is '#m above ground. Co external bracing on the fa>ade can be mobilised. @and
scaped/ community gardens can be provided at every "
th
level of the residential section %hile services $ors are located in the o+ce
areas. These gardens can be multi levels.
The client %ishes to ma&e a statement through the structural expression/ highlighting the company policyD Aprogress through care
and support for our employeesB. 3t is therefore suggested to adopt/ in part/ hung $oor technique %here hangers are clearly
expressed on the exterior or interior fa>ade. .e %ish to have the most outstanding proposal to ta&e part in the competition
including preliminary si(es for &ey structural elements.
&ig'-rie Project 3
A state-of the-art -# level hotel to%er is to be developed by a major developer. This development/ %hich is to be located '."&m
o=shore on reclaimed land/ needs to be self su+cient in essential facilities. The to%er has a typical foot print of '"##sqm. The upper
"# levels are serviced residential apartments and the remaining lo%er levels are dedicated for shopping/ recreational and

community needs. The to%er has central core shafts comprised of lift shafts/ stair %ell and services %hich shall not exceed E? of the
$oor area. 3ts overall height is '#m above ground.
Client is internationally &no%n for eco-friendly/ self-sustaining and sustainable ecotourism and its chain of hotels in various locations
of the planet. Fiven it is proposed on a reclaimed land/ the developers expect its natural environment %ould be incorporated in to
the design and %ilderness character is mimic&ed %ithin the building)s interior and exterior. 3t is proposed four landscaped areas to
be included over the height of the building including a roof top restaurant. To%er to be partially self-po%ered by solar energy.
