Senecas Charlie Castillo

claims volunteer victory
Recent graduate honored with $10,000
Burlington County College Scholarship Award
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

The folks of the Pine Barrens did not let the high temperatures ruin their fun last week. The 27th
Pine Barrens Festival was once again a huge hit as people from all over filed in to celebrate the
Pinelands culture with action-packed rides, cold drinks and funnel cakes.

A festival of family fun

Tradition continues for 27th year at Church of the Holy Eucharist
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Twenty-seven years later, and
the Pine Barrens Festival is
stronger than ever. With everything from chicken wings and
cold beer to cotton candy and
funnel cakes, the tastes of the

festival at the Church of the

Holy Eucharist provide a little
slice of heaven for all ages.
Theres good food every
night, good entertainment every
night and my favorite part is the
different theme in the culture
and history tent every night,
Wilma Davison of Tabernacle

said.
For those who are not as interested in the history of the
Pinelands, Majestic Midways

With 84 applications from 21

schools, the Burlington County
College Scholarship Award is
growing more competitive each
year.
As of 2009, the award has been
named in honor of Joe Laufer
who passed away in 2014 at the
age of 79.
Laufer dedicated his life to volunteering and educating. He
worked at Rowan College at
Burlington County for 27 years in
various academic and administrative roles, including associate
dean for business relations.
He also served as a township
committee
member
for
Southampton Township and was
a greatly respected man in the
county.
The Burlington County Volunteer Center originally gave $1,000
in college scholarship awards to
volunteers in the area who made
a difference. The organization
was then contacted by the Haines
Family Foundation out of respect
for Laufer, and with its help, the
award grew to $7,500 the following
year.
Now with the help of this family and the funds the organization

receives from the Joe Laufer memorial fund, the award has grown
drastically, and this year it has
given $25,000 to four students in
the area.
Going forward, we hope to
find another foundation to help
with the funding because it is
growing increasingly more difficult to narrow down the applications to such a select few winners, said Michael Pippen, coordinator at the Volunteer Center of
Burlington County.
Among the group of four winners from the 2015 class was
Senecas own Charlie Castillo,
who was given the largest prize of
$10,000.
I was very surprised to hear
that I was awarded the scholarship, Castillo said. To be one of
the few people chosen to receive
this award means a lot to me. I
feel very fortunate.
Castillo will be attending
American University in Washington, D.C., in the fall. Similar to
most private schools, the cost to
attend is high so winning the
grand prize was very beneficial to
him.
I was surprised to hear that I
was awarded the $10,000 scholarplease see CASTILLO, page 4

ship. I'm relieved that I will have
some money to pay for college,
but I didn't expect to win this
much money, Castillo said.
After going over the scholarship application requirements
and the qualities of the candidates, Castillo believed he met
much of the criteria the scholarship committee was looking for.
I've been volunteering for as
long as I can remember, Castillo
said.
His volunteering efforts have
been widespread and have impacted a vast crowd.
His senior year of high school,
he helped rebuild a house that
was damaged by Hurricane
Sandy. He volunteers at a thrift
store in Camden called Clothes

From the Heart, and from middle

school to his early high school
years, he volunteered as a docent
in the Dinosaur Hall at the Academy of Natural Sciences in
Philadelphia.
Castillo has been a guest speaker at Rowan College at Burlington
County where he spoke to students about his experiences growing up as a deaf person, and has
also served as a student administrator in an organization called
Hearing Optional.
He helps plan events that deaf
and hard-of-hearing children and
their families can attend where
they can mingle and feel less isolated.
Contributing to this organization makes me feel proud of my
identity as a member of the deaf
and hard-of-hearing community,
Castillo said.

recommended by one school official and one non-school community leader.

Castillo received letters of recommendation from his high
school guidance counselor and
his former elementary school
teacher, who is also a community
leader who contributes to Clothes
From the Heart as well as Hearing Optional.
Castillo has formed a lasting
relationship with both of his former teachers.
My high school guidance
counselor helped me a lot
throughout my four years of high
school, with everything from my
course schedule to general concerns that I had. My former elementary school teacher is a
teacher of the deaf. She helped
me to develop my strong language
skills and encouraged me to take
Latin in middle school. This gave
me confidence to take honors and
AP English in high school, as well
as four years of French and to
excel in both languages. We've
been in touch ever since I left elementary school, and we still see
each other every chance we get,
Castillo said.
Castillo is excited for the new
opportunities that will await him
at American University.

This years election is very important for New Jersey residents

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

he calendar is about to turn the

page to August, and here we
are, talking about November already. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 3, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates themselves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the near future.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christies seat is
not up for election, though he is doing
some campaigning himself, as we all
know.
There are no Senate or House of
Representatives seats up for election in
our state, either. But still, 2015 could
prove to be an important year locally.
Thats because, as is the case in oddnumbered years, all 80 seats in the
General Assembly are up for election.
These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local level

than an election for president of the
United States. These are the people
who represent your interests.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of education will also be holding elections to
choose new members to represent the
town. Mayors, councilmembers and
school board members often have a
greater impact on your daily life than
your governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum have
more of an impact on your day-to-day
life, and those local post holders are
the ones who control those areas the
most.
So just because you wont be voting

for the next governor or the next president doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we can
this fall, especially when there is a contested election at the municipal level.
If your town has a contested municipal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you detailed information
about the election itself, as well as profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues.
If you have any questions youd like
us to ask the candidates, feel free to
email us at the address to the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues. What happens behind those curtains in November could have a profound impact on
what happens in front of them for the
foreseeable future.

chines that should be avoided on
a full stomach.
This year, 92.5 XTU added to
the fun by stationing a tent at the
entrance and filling the air with
everybodys favorite country
tunes.Of course the music played
second fiddle to the laughs and
shouts from the action-packed
rides the children could not get
enough of.
Carole Pulaski and Barbara
Dunn talked about how it is one of
the limited chances people get to
converse with old friends they
dont get to see often.
Its a great opportunity to see
people that you havent seen in
awhile. I only see some of these
people once a year and its nice to
catch up, Pulaski said. Its also
nice because its in the middle of
the summer.
Even with temperatures heating up well into the 90s, folks were
not deterred from coming out and
supporting the Church of the
Holy Eucharists largest fundraiser. Edward Mooney is a longtime
Southampton
resident
who
moved here from Philadelphia
and has been coming to the festival for 14 years now.
The church needs money, and
this is a great way to meet people
and thank their volunteers,
Mooney said. Its also an opportunity for the church to meet
other parishes.
Any way you slice it, the festival is arguably the most anticipated event of the year for a typically
slow area known for its natural
tranquility.
Its good, controlled fun, Zoe
Kane of Tabernacle said. It really gives people the opportunity to
come out and enjoy the Pine Barrens.

Hundreds of volunteers working with the church were happy

to dedicate their time, whether it
was selling raffle tickets or supervising the carnival games.
All dressed in their blue tshirts, they enhanced each
guests experience by greeting
everyone like they were the first
person to walk through the en-

trance.
Linda Waters was in charge of
the carnival game side of the action that had an assortment of
fun options.
We keep it safe, clean and the
best in the area, Waters said. Of
course, other than the Burlington
County Farm Fair, it is the only
one in the area!
