LESSON PLAN FOR GRADE 1

Lesson: Rhyming Words: Onset and Rimes


Objectives
Pupils will be able to:

Recite the nursery rhyme properly


Identify rhyming words in the nursery rhyme
Develop phonemic awareness skills such as manipulation of the onset and
rime
Identify the distinction when one phoneme is changed
Practice a good auditory skill
Enhance critical thinking

Materials and Technology

Nursery Rhyme Flip Chart or large chart paper with the nursery rhyme Jack
and Jill written on it
Word Strips
Lyre

SESSION 1
1. Anticipatory set: Ask the pupils the question, What would you do if you
have no running water? The pupils would have several answers for this.
Some would say:
I will get from the well.
I will buy from water station
2. Ask them whether they are familiar with the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill.
3. Present the large chart paper with the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill written
on it. Afterwards, sing it aloud to the class with the accompaniment of the
lyre.
4. Ask the pupils to stand up and recite the nursery rhyme using the following
movements:
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water [Bend over as if to pick up a
pail of water]
Jack fell down and broke his crown [Hold head in hands]
And Jill came tumbling after. [Roll arms]
Up got Jack, and home did trot [March in place]
As fast as he could caper
He went to bed and bound his head [Pretend to sleep]
With vinegar and brown paper.

5. Ask them if they enjoyed the activity. Then, have an evaluation question
which are:
Why do you think Jack and Jill fell?
Why would they need to fetch water?
SESSION 2
1. Show and tell the words (on strips) that rhyme with hill and then tape them to
the board.
2. Read the following riddles one by one and tape them on the board. Have the
students choose the correct word to complete the riddle by saying it and
placing the correct word strip beside the riddle placed on the board.
These are the following riddles:
1. Whenever the duck needs its mouth to fill,
It opens me up, Im the ______________. (bill)
2. Standing outside my windowsill
In the winter, I feel a ______. (chill)
3. My dad does woodworking with lots of skill.
I love to watch him use his ___________. (drill)
4. Eating hamburgers is such a thrill
when we cook them on the _____. (grill)
5. Jack and Jill
went up a ______. (hill)
6. If Ive got an awful chill,
Then I know that I am _____. (ill)
7. I see the flowers sitting still
in the vase on the window _______. (sill)
8. When I was sick and feeling ill,
my mom gave me a yellow ______. (pill)
9. Maybe they wont, maybe they will.
The logs are floating past the ______. (mill)
10.Underneath my windowsill
grows the prettiest yellow _________. (daffodil)

3. Ask them the question, What have you noticed with the answers on the
activity?
Their answers would be:
They have the same ending sounds.
4. Begin a discussion about rhyming sounds.
Since they have already noticed that they have the same ending sounds,
infer a conclusion that they are all rhyming wordswords sounding same
together.
SESSION 3
1. Tape the words JACK (on the left), NO RHYME (center), and JILL (on the
right) on the board.
2. Ask the pupils to stand up.
3. Present the mechanics for this activity. You will ask them to put their
hands on their waist. Present different words that would or wouldnt rhyme
with the words JACK and JILL.
4. If the word being mentioned would rhyme with the word JACK, they should
move their waist towards the left. If the word rhymes with JILL, they should
move their waist towards the right. If the word doesnt rhyme at all, they
will move their waist backwards.
The words to be given are the following:
