This document is an assignment from a Strength of Materials course at Navrachana University. It contains 9 questions about stress and strain concepts including tensors, stress at a point, shear stress, bearing pressure, Mohr's circle, and calculating normal and shear stresses on inclined planes. Students are asked to explain these concepts, draw related sketches, derive equations, and graphically represent stresses on Mohr's circle. The assignment is due on August 12th, 2013.

CE 201: Strength of Materials Assignment 2 Assignment Date: 1st August 2013
Submission Date: 12th August 2013
1. Explain tensors and further, explain why stress is a tensor.
2. Explain with a neat sketch the state of three dimensional stress at a point in a body and write the stress tensor. 3. A bar is under axial compression of 40MPa and clockwise shear of 20 MPa. Write the stress tensor for a point in the bar. 4. Explain shear stress and complementary shear stress. Explain why complementary stress is developed. 5. With the help of neat sketches, explain why shear stress on a section is not uniform even if uniform shear force is applied. 6. Explain bearing pressure. 7. Explain one way shear and two way shear. 8. Derive equations for normal stress and shear stress on a given plane on a bar under axial stress. Also, draw Mohrs circle for the same. 9. Draw Mohrs circle for a bar under axial stress of 100 MPa. Calculate analytically and graphically (on a graph paper), the values of normal and shear stress on a plane having a normal at angle 30 o to horizontal.
