THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY IN

ANTIS HAND SANITIZER PRODUCTION PROCESS

Each product has a different performance. The quality of a product can be seen from the
comparison between performance and expectations of the product. There are two things that define
quality, variables and attributes. Variables associated with elements of the product that can be
measured, such as height, width, volume, and weight, while attribute is the observation of features,
characteristics or function of the product. Product is said to be not rejected if it meets these two
conditions, passes inspection dimension measurement as well as be able to function properly. In
addition, the quality of product can be seen from the product turnover in the market. When there is
a lot of product piled on the market (low turnover) and result in the rate banking loss on the owner,
it can be concluded that the product has poor quality. It is said to be poor because from many
attributes of the product, only a few accepted by the market. One of the method to identify what
kind of attributes that is accepted by the market is Critical to Quality or so-called CTQ.
CTQ is the process of analyzing input, output, flow that affects the quality standards of
products, and attributes that meet customer desires both internal and external. One of them is the
upper limit and lower limit tolerance of the product specifications or other factors. The flowchart
developed by CTQ identifies the problems and find the root cause. The CTQ analysis consists of the
calculation of variables. It describes the need of quality, but has shortcomings in the specification
that can be calculated.
To describe the request of the customer, the critical to quality tree is made. One of its
functions is to convert customer demand that is still abstract into product attributes. Additionally,
CTQ tree gave assurances that all the mandatory requirements on products will be met. The first
step to create CTQ tree is to determine the basic requirements of the customer. The marketing
department tries to find out the basic functions of what is desired by the customer toward the
product. Furthermore, the marketing department tries to meet two or three functions customer
desires. The function is then converted into an attribute that can be calculated to be added to the
product characteristics. The last step is to confirm the final requirements with customer. Last step
only applies when all needs at critical to quality tree has reach a standard level after confirmed by
the customer.
Every product needs to perform quality control which refers to a standard to keep exist in
the market. These standards called dimension of quality control. Here, the author would like to
describe the quality dimensions of Antis hand sanitizer. Antis is an alcohol-based product of
antiseptic hand sanitizers that effectively kills germs such as bacteria that cause colds and diarrhea.
The active ingredients of the product include alcohol 60% and irgasan DP-300 which effectively
kills germs. To prevent dry skin due to the alcohol content, antis are also equipped with moisturizer.
Available in many sizes, Antis has pocket size which is handy and easy to carry around. Antis
durability in protecting hands from germs lasted two hours. The product varies based on the form
and fragrance. There are three variance, lime, fresh clean, and cucumber. There are gel (ordinary
package) and liquid form (spray package). There are customer line service on the back of

Like any other products, Antis also has attributes and variables in determining quality.
Measurable variables or dimensions of Antis consist of volume per unit, the percentage of each
ingredient in each unit, and the viscosity of the gel.

Meanwhile, Antis hand sanitizer attributes consist of customer desires of products. The
author posit itself as a customer and identify that as a hand sanitizer product, Antis should be
varied, cheap, easy to get, durable, safe to use, potent and practical.

1. Antis product variations based on the content form and the fragrance used. Antis available in
liquid and gel form. The liquid product inside the spray package make it more practice to
use and more economical. The fragrance variations have to leave the impression of a clean
and fresh, they are lime and cucumber.
2. The retail price of the products ranges from Rp9.000,- for a bottle of 60 ml volume. Onetime use requires 0.8 ml of fluid, means the Antis 60 ml bottle can be used up to 75 times.
Assume customer use Antis every time before meals, three times a day, this means the
product can last for 25 days of use.
3. Product must be easily found and available, in order to reach customers more broadly. So
far, Antis easily found in grocery stores in Indonesia such as Alfamart, Indomart, Giant,
Superindo and even at some roadside shops.
4. The third attribute is durable. One of the active anti-microbial formulas in Antis is irgasan
DP-300 proven to be safe for the skin and effectively kill germs while protecting hands from
bacteria for 2 hours.
5. The word sanitizer is synonymous with cleaner like cleanser, detergent, and purifier.
Customer certainly wants Antis to be safe to use because their hands will be used to eat after
smeared by the product. Therefore, the company uses disinfectants such as alcohol where
alcohol is a natural disinfectant that is harmless, effective and volatile so it doesn't leave
some on hand.
6. To prevent dry skin due to the alcohol content, Antis contains softener and moisturizer that
serves as occlusive which coat the skin with oil to suppress the evaporation of excess water,
maintaining skin moisture, and humectants functions to give the outer layer of skin the
ability to maintain the water level. Antis potent to use because Antis will destroy the cell
walls of the germs that fall from the surface of the skin.
7. Last attribute is practicality of use. Customer doesn't need water, wipes, or towel to apply
because the Antis gel immediately evaporates when rubbed into the skin surface. The
package size of 30 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml make Antis easy to carry anywhere.
Briefly, the critical to quality tree of Antis can be seen in Figure 3.

The production process of Antis hand sanitizer is not too complicated. The materials
required such as alcohol 60%, moisturizer and softener, irgasan DP-300, and fragrance are mixed
into one, accompanied by a series of inspection processes at each dose formula. After that, Antis
material put into bottles and ready to be distributed to the distributor.
Antis is categorized into health product, so it requires strict quality control in the
manufacturing process. If the percentage of the dose of each ingredient is not in accordance with the
standard, then it would be fatal. For example, if the percentage of moisturizer is smaller than
alcohol, the customer's skin moisture will be reduced and cause dry skin, even harmful effects.
In addition, the viscosity of the gel should be closely watched. Low viscosity (gel too liquid)
is suitable for spray packaging and less suitable for ordinary packaging. The form will be too liquid
to be smeared onto the skin and causing the gel splattered everywhere, it is not practical.
Volume on its bottles per unit is 30 ml, 60 ml and 250 ml. Typically, the volume at 30 ml
bottle is not exactly 30 ml, it could be 29.8 ml or 30.2 ml. There is a certain tolerance, which is the
upper limit and lower limit to the volume of gel in a bottle. Products that can come out to the
market is a product with volume in between the upper and lower limits of tolerance.
Quality control is important to maintain the relationship with customer. Once the product
experienced quality degradation, the customer will be difficult to trust the product function and
results in the decreasing product turnover and loss. In addition to quality control, quality
improvement is also needed so that products continue to innovate and evolve to keep pace with
market demand.
