1. Define Demography: The scientific study of population
characteristics.

2. What are the three reasons why the study of population is


important?

a. To study the challenge of increasing food supply.

b. To study the challenge of reducing pollution.

c. And to study the challenge of encouraging economic

growth.

3. Define overpopulation: is not simply a matter of the total


number of people on Earth but also includes the
relationship between the number of people and the
availability of resources.

4. Give two reasons for people in India wanting to have large


families?
a. Children are an economic asset because they help
perform chores on the farm. They are also expected
to provide for their parents in their old age.

b. The high percentage of children who will die before


they reach working age also encourages large
families.

5. What has India had to focus the majority of its newfound


wealth towards? Therefore, the growing wealth is going
primarly to provide a reasonable standerd of living for an
expanding population. Further, will employment be
available to these 375 million children when they are old
enough to work.
