ENERGY
I will be able to explain and calculate kinetic energy
and gravitational energy.

Energy

Energy is the capacity to do work.

Objects possess energy whether they are at rest or in
motion.

Kinetic Energy (EK)

The energy possessed by moving objects

Formula:

=

See Pg. 230-231 to see how it is derived (if you care!)

Example 1:
A 250 g ball has a kinetic energy of 112 J. What is its velocity?

Work-Energy Principle

The net amount of mechanical work done on an object

equals the objects change in kinetic energy.

or

Example 2
A 175 g hockey puck at rest is pushed by a hockey stick on the
ice (assume frictionless) by a constant horizontal force of 5.6 N.
What is the pucks speed after 0.55 m.

Gravitational Potential Energy

Potential energy a form of energy an object possesses
because of its position.
Gravitational potential energy is the energy an object has
due to its position relative to the surface of the Earth.

Formula:
=
Example: Determine the gravitational potential energy of a
52 kg student at the top of Drop Zone (70.1 m)
