Haynayan Days 2016


Literary Events General Guidelines

1. The Haynayan Days 2015 Literary Events shall be held on November 17-18, 2016. Attached
herewith are the guidelines, schedules and venues of each specific event.
2. All participants from each team must be a bona fide undergraduate student of Department of
Biological Sciences of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology currently
enrolled in the first semester of the Academic Year 2016-2017.
3. All teams must submit a list of participants on November 11, 6:00 pm to the Haynayan Days
2016 Literary Events Chairperson, Princess E. Capangpangan. Conditions for the registration of
each team are of as follows:
a. A duly accomplished Entry Form (Appendix A) signed by the team leader to validate the
legitimacy of the participants. The team leader is also given the authority to appoint 3
Grievance Committee representatives.
b. A participant listed can only join 2 literary contests to allow other team members to
participate and enjoy.
c. Late registration for a team will still be accepted but will be sanctioned to a 1 point
deduction per judge for each literary event.
4. All participants must be within the contest venue to register 15 minutes before their event
schedule. Basis for the time is Philippine Standard Time (PST).
5. Absence of a participant during the event proper would result to deduction of points depending on
the contest guidelines. However, if there are valid inevitable instances which may lead to the
absence of a participant, a substitute may be allowed to replace them provided that they are
identified by their team leader or a team appointee during the event registration proper and must
fill-up an Absentee Form (Appendix B).
6. Disqualified participants are not allowed to participate and will be given a default score
(Last Place).
7. Everyone must exhibit courteous behavior during the event proper. Anyone displaying
misdemeanor, obscenity and/or reckless behaviors (including trash talking) will be sanctioned
accordingly.
8. Contestants under the influence of liquor and/or prohibited drugs will not be allowed to
participate.
9. Immediately after the last presentation or the event proper, each representative from the
Grievance Committee of each team will be given 10 minutes to raise their concern or complaints.
Failure to raise these after 10 minutes grace period will forfeit their rights to appeal.
10.Deduction of points from grievances and penalties, concurred by every team representatives, shall
be made by the Chairman of the Board of Tabulators.
11.The decision of the Board of Judges, once signed by the Board of Tabulators, is final and
irrevocable.

Feature Writing (English)

Guidelines

1. The event shall be held on ______________________________________________.


2. There shall only be 1 representative for each team.
3. Upon arrival, the participants shall immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and
instructions. They must present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided. They
will be given a number to signify their work in an order according to their arrival at the contest
venue.
4. Leaving the venue is not allowed unless permitted by the Event Coordinator or by a member of
the Haynayan Days Literary Committee.
5. Late contestants will still be allowed to participate but will not be given additional time to finish
their work. The contest will finish within 2 hours after it has started.
6. The theme will be announced before the contest proper starts.
7. The Haynayan Days Literary Committee will only provide 3 sheets of long bond papers and 3
sheets of yellow paper as scratch. The participants shall provide their own black ball point ball-
point pen. The use of sign pens and pencil is not allowed.
8. The piece must be written in English and should comprise a minimum of 500 words to a
maximum of 700 words, written double-spaced and on only one face of the bond paper.
9. Participants are not allowed to mark their paper anything that may identify their team except for
their given number.
10. The participants have 2 hours to draft and finalize their essays. Entries must be submitted on or
before the allotted time. Failure to do so will incur the following point deductions per judge:

5:00 6:59 minutes 2 points
7:00 8:59 minutes 3 points
9:00 minutes and onwards 4 points

Feature Writing (Filipino)

Guidelines

1. The event shall be held on ______________________________________________________.


2. There shall only be 1 representative for each team.
3. Upon arrival, the participants shall immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and
instructions. They must present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided. They
will be given a number to signify their work in an order according to their arrival at the contest
venue.
4. Leaving the venue is not allowed unless permitted by the Event Coordinator or by a member of
the Haynayan Days Literary Committee.
5. Late contestants will still be allowed to participate but will not be given additional time to finish
their work. The contest will finish within 2 hours after it has started.

Sketch Essay Guidelines

1. The event is scheduled on ________________________.


2. There shall only be 1 representative for each team. They are not allowed to ask other people for
ideas neither to search by any means on the internet or else they will be subjected to
disqualification. Total plagiarism is greatly discouraged and may be subjected to disqualification.
3. Upon arrival, the participants shall immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and
instructions. They must present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided. They
will be given a number to signify their work in an order according to their arrival at the contest
venue.
4. Leaving the venue is not allowed unless permitted by the Event Coordinator or by a member of
the Haynayan Days Literary Committee.
5. Late contestants will still be allowed to participate but will not be given additional time to finish
their work.
6. The final product of each participant must be relevant to the theme that will be given by the
facilitator on the spot.
7. Participants are not allowed to mark their paper anything that may identify their team except for
their given number.
8. The Haynayan Days Literary Committee will provide for the sketching materials. They shall not
use other materials aside from the provided materials.
9. During the course of the event, they will be accompanied by a Grievance Committee
Representative of another team to ensure fulfillment of guidelines no. 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8.
10. The participants are given up to ____ pm to finish their work. Entries must be submitted on or
before the allotted time. Failure to do so will incur the following point deductions per judge:

Photography

Guidelines

1. The event is scheduled to meet on __________________________. but they are allowed to roam
around the MSU-IIT campus.
2. There shall only be 1 representative for each team. They must bring their own camera.
3. Upon arrival, the participants shall immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and
instructions. They must present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided. The
number for the participants will be according to the order of the submission of their works.
4. Late contestants will still be allowed to participate but will not be given additional time to finish
their work.
5. Each participant is required to photograph an event or object during the aforementioned day that
is relevant to theme which will be announced on the spot. The scope of the event specifies that
the photographs must not depict objects or events outside the MSU-IIT campus.
6. During the course of the event, they will be accompanied by a Grievance Committee
Representative of another team to ensure fulfillment of guidelines no. 5 and 7.
7. The photographs must be authentic and must not be edited in any means possible. Therefore,
there must be no application of Filters, Effects and after shoot editing (i.e. Photoshop). Penalty
for this violation may vary from point deduction to disqualification.
8. They must present the camera to be used. The participants must choose only 1 photograph
softcopy in JPEG with an attached title and caption (1 paragraph, 3-5 sentences) in a separate MS
Word document as a final entry. They will be are given limited time to finish their work. Entries
must be submitted on or before the allotted time. Failure to do so will incur the following point
deductions per judge:

15:00 minutes and onwards 4 points

Haynayan Quiz Bowl

Guidelines

1. The event shall be held on ___________________. There shall only be 2 teams to represent each
Haynayan team. These two teams will constitute a maximum of 2 members. Teams with lacking
participants shall be considered disqualified.
2. The participants must arrive 15 minutes earlier than the aforementioned time and shall
immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and instructions upon arrival. They must
present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided.
3. Leaving the venue is not allowed unless permitted by the Event Coordinator or by a member of
the Haynayan Days Literary Committee.
4. Participants are not allowed to bring anything during the contest proper. (i.e. Cellphones,
Calculators, and etc.). The materials for the event are given
5. The questions are categorized into 3 rounds: Easy, Average and Difficult Rounds. The points per
round and further instructions will be announced in the event. A tie-breaker round will be given to
teams that have acquired equal number of points.
6. Complaints must be raised before the next question. Complaints raised after the question will no
longer be entertained.
7. The team earning the highest points shall be declared the winner.

Spelling Bee Competition

Guidelines

1. The event shall be held on _______________________________.


2. There shall only be 2 representatives for each team.
3. The participants must arrive 15 minutes earlier than the aforementioned time and shall
immediately report to the Event Coordinator for briefing and instructions upon arrival. They must
present their Institute IDs and fill up the attendance sheet provided.
4. Leaving the venue is not allowed unless permitted by the Event Coordinator or by a member of
the Haynayan Days Literary Committee.
5. Participants are not allowed to bring anything during the contest proper. (i.e. Cellphones,
Calculators, and etc.)
6. The event shall comprise of 2 parts (A written and oral recitation part) and 3 rounds (Common,
Peculiar and Arcane round). The written part shall consist of the Common and Peculiar rounds
while the Oral recitation part shall comprise of the Arcane round. A tie-breaker (oral recitation)
round will be given to participants that have acquired equal number of points.
7. Words from the Common round will garner 1 point per correct spelling while on the Peculiar
round and Arcane round will garner 3 and 5 points respectively per correct spelling.
8. In the written part, the words will be pronounced first by the host and will be repeated twice by a
MIDI pronunciation. Afterwards, they will be given the country of origin, definition of the word
and its usage in a sentence before allowing them to spell for duration of 15 seconds only.
9. Only the top 3 participants from the written part shall proceed to the Oral Recitation part.
10. In the Oral recitation part, they will draw a word from a container. The words are delivered the
same as in the written part although to answer, they must first pronounce the word then spell each
letter precisely without any repetition and finally end by pronouncing the word again. (For
example, the word is PEACE, Peace, P-E-A-C-E, Peace).
11. The level of difficulty for each word will be raised by a single letter by each cycle. The remaining
participants shall try to correctly spell every word or else they will be eliminated.
12. Once there are only 2 participants left, when one participant has made a mistake, the other
participant must spell 2 words correctly or else they will repeat another cycle unless there is a
declared winner.
13. Complaints must be raised before moving to the next word. Complaints raised after moving to the
next word will no longer be entertained.
14. The words to be spelled are all Anglicized but may or may not originate from the English
language alone.
15. The team with the participants earning the highest average points shall be declared the winner.
