Our Kosovo Testament
You were bought at a price; do not
become slaves of human beings (1
Cor. 7:23) writes St. Paul the Apostle
to the faithful in Corinth, remind-
ing them of the price of sonship of
all those who believe in the Lord
Jesus Christ and the terrible sacri-
fice of Golgotha by which we were
redeemed from the ancestral sin.
Likewise, we Serbs at every Vido-
vdan, can repeat that we as a people
, throughout our Christian history,
were bought for a high price, re-
membering the great sacrifices of
Lazar and his fellow soldiers, those
who consciously chose going to their
death so as to leave their glorious
mark to their descendants - that we in
the later centuries, throughout all our
trials and tribulations, be reminded
that we are Christs, and that our path
is the path of sacrifice.
Among Serbs it is often heard that
Kosovo is the Serbian Jerusalem! This
sounds nice, but it is only partially
true. Jerusalem passed throughout
the ages from hand to hand, religion
to religion, from people to people and
because of this only grew stronger.
Concerning Kosovo there cannot be
any ambiguity as to whom this word
belongs. For only Kosovo defines us
Serbs as a people.
It is marvellous when we Serbs cel-
ebrate our slava, heavenly when the
feasts of Our Lords Nativity and His
Resurrection draw us together in our
churches and God-pleasing when we
liturgically assemble together under
the arches of our churches. But we
feebly want to remember that all of
us are indebted to one day and one
place: Vidovdan and Kosovo. Had not
our Holy Prince Lazar together with
his Holy Martyrs gone out to that
field for the Faith and Fatherland,
we would not be Serbs today. Had it
not been for Serbian participation
in the testament left to us by Vido-
vdan - The earthly kingdom is for a
short time, but the heavenly is forever
and unto the ages - we probably
would be among tens of millions, but
for sure we would not be Serbs. We
would not gather under the arches
of our churches and celebrate Gods
chosen ones. More than likely we
would be bowing in other types of
places of worship and exchange the
Heavenly Kingdom for the earthly
kingdom of earthly delights.
In Kosovo and throughout Metohija
Serbian places of worship, churches
and monasteries are most densely
planted. Such a Kosovo and such a
Metohija are our spiritual inspiration.
Jerusalem can be an example of how
the Jews have struggled for centuries
that Jerusalem be returned to them,
so we must struggle for Kosovo. But
this return is two-sided. This is about
returning to, not giving back, because
we did not give Kosovo to anyone,
neither will we give it, as long as we
follow Lazars testament, despite what

politicians say and sign. Did not our
poet, Matija Beckovic correctly and
wisely say: If they say it is not ours.
then why do they seek for us to give it
to them?
Lazars Testament is the deed to the
land of Kosovo, but only when and
inasmuch as we live according to
Lazars Testament. And only then
when we return to God and His testa-
ments will God grant us to return to
Kosovo.
These days even here we are cele-
brating some of our jubilees. Three
decades have passed since the Serbian
Orthodox Church here began truth-
fully to live in her fullness. Our pres-
ence in this country is more visible,
our churches have changed and deco-
rated the Canadian landscape. But, all
of this without the living testaments
of Kosovo consciousness, is only cold
stone. Therefore, let us ask ourselves:
do we, even here in this land of
abundance also walk alone, where no
one holds a sword over our head, as
Orthodox Christians? Without this,
how can we claim the right to tread
on the land consecrated by the blood
of martyrs, hierarchs and confessors?
In these days let us have this on our
minds, let us find in our hearts the
preparedness and love for sacrifice, as
we did not long ago while helping our
brothers and sisters in misfortune, in
our flooded Fatherland. If we do this
daily, it will be even easier for us that
the holy land, the Serbian Jerusalem
again be ours.

Love, Love, Love

The media and technology are amaz-
ing, arent they? In mere seconds,
before you have time to think, a
message is sent via text or twitter or
email or some other device. On tele-
vision we are preached to on a daily
basis by celebrities on the evils of
prejudice, hate and bullying. I find it
ironic when one of these messages is
followed by a show about celebrities
that is a nonstop barrage of mockery,
insult and condemnation. Even on
the evening news one cannot escape
the judgemental mob mentality
(without the mob). Unfortunately,
the gossip and judgement are deliv-
ered through the speed of technology
by and against all sectors of society
faster than anyone can assess the
damage. Where is the innocent until
proven guilty? Where is the com-
passion? Where is the fairness? The
world truly needs more love.
He that loveth not knoweth not
God; for God is love. (1 John 4:8)
Yes, if more in the world believed,
truly believed in God, then the world
would have more Love.
When asked which is the great
commandment in the law? Jesus said
unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord
thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great command-
ment. And the second is like unto
it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. On these two commandments
hang all the law and the prophets.
(Matt. 22: 36 -40)
God gave man free will, for love that
is not given freely means nothing. In
the same way, obedience that is not
of ones own free will means nothing.
Love that is pure and true radiates
from the soul like light from the sun
to shine on all. Those who love God

with all their heart, and with all their
soul, and with all their mind, would
surely also have love for their neigh-
bours as well as all of Gods creation.
Throughout the New Testament our
Lord Jesus Christ and His Apostles
teach that to be a Christian one must
love (not to be confused with lust).
And now these three remain: faith,
hope and love. But the greatest of
these is love. (1 Cor.13:13) True,
pure love is what we see demonstrat-
ed by God, our Lord Jesus Christ and
the saints wherein there is loyalty,
sacrifice and humility. This is how
we know what love is: Jesus Christ
laid down his life for us. And we
ought to lay down our lives for our
brothers. If anyone has material
possessions and sees his brother in
need but has no pity on him, how
can the love of God be in him? Dear
children, let us not love with words
or tongue but with actions and in

truth. (1 John 3:16-18) Love is
patient and kind; love does not envy
or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It
does not insist on its own way; it is
not irritable or resentful; it does not
rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices
with the truth. Love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things,
endures all things. Love never ends. (
1 Corinthians 13:48)
Love must be the same for all, even
those who do not seem to deserve
our love and kindness. But love your
enemies, do good to them, and lend
to them without expecting to get
anything back. Then your reward will
be great, and you will be sons of the
Most High, because he is kind to the
ungrateful and wicked. (Luke 6:35)
Such love requires compassion, hu-
mility and obedience. All sin is dis-
obedience though it is not only God
that man must obey. There would be
no order, no civilization and no peace
without obedience. One has only to
look at the violence and chaos in the
world today to understand the con-
sequences of not respecting authority
and not loving your neighbour as
yourself. Then again, so many do not
even value their own lives; is it any
wonder they have so little regard for
others?
Even the Lord, when He came into
this world as the incarnation of God,
did not put Himself above the law.
As a true example to us He demon-
strated obedience. Think not that
I am come to destroy the Law or the
Prophets. I am not come to destroy,
but to fulfill. (Matt. 5:17) Behold, I
have come . . . to do thy will, O God
(Hebrews 10:7). For I did not speak
on My own initiative, but the Father
Himself who sent Me has given Me
commandment, what to say, and what
to speak (John 12:49). Though we
have free will, Jesus makes it clear
when He gives us instruction on how
to pray whose will (authority) we
should honour. Pray, then, in this
way: Our Father, who art in heav-
en, . . . thy will be done (Matthew

When our Lord sat down with His
Apostles, after they recognized Him
as the Christ, the Son of the Living
God and told them that when they
went to Jerusalem He would suf-

the Messiah, and they had witnessed
miracles, but they still had worldly
expectations. The Lord rebuked them
and then after six days Jesus took
with him Peter and James, and John
his brother, and led them up a high

Christian Responsibility

The term responsibility is derived
from Latin respondere which
translates to respond. This term
implies dialogue, thus, as people, we
respond to someone, to something,
to each other. It is an inquisition,
examination to a given question or
act. As Christians it is of upmost
importance to deal with our respon-
sibilities. We are answerable to each
other, and even more important, we
are answerable to God.
Through the Holy gift of baptism
we are initiated into the Mystery of
ecclesial gathering. By baptism we
give an oath to Christ, an oath of
love. We enter a new atmosphere
of relationship, where we all are ac-
countable for one another. With this
unity we give thanks to our Saviour.
We commute with Him through the
most Holy gift given to mankind
the Holy Eucharist ( Mary, became Man Jesus Christ,
= thanksgiving). And this is only
possible through the gift of love
among ourselves as the community
in Christ.
What are the responsibilities of Or-
thodox Christians? Before we answer
this upmost important question I
would like to indicate a problem that
might be of interest in our modern
times. I believe that many who enter
the Orthodox Church, enter with a
traditionalistic sense of view. Thus
many are Baptized because of their
national belonging (Serbian, Greek,
Russian ext.), or marriage circum-
stances, where a spouse enters our
Church for emotional reasons he or
she feels towards her husband or his
wife. This is not a bad thing, but in
most occasions the faith is accepted
passively. It is because of such rea-
sons the Church introduced the cat-
echumenate, in which all who are of
age prepare for the Holy Baptism by
being introduced to Christ and His
Church. It is essential that we res-
urrect this program of preparation
so that we have stronger Christians.
This would be the first problem
that needs to be acknowledged and
answered. It is an abundant problem
if one does not take the faith in God
seriously before the Holy entrance
into the Church, the same is implied
to the godfather/godmother who be-
come spiritual parents to the newly
baptized children of God.
Therefore, the first responsibility
for an Orthodox Christian is to
understand to which faith he or she
belongs. We have to understand that
we believe in One God the Father,
and His only begotten Son and the
Holy Spirit who proceeds from
the Father. We are called upon to
understand that by the will of the
Father, the Son, through the Holy
Spirit and the Most Holy Virgin

salvation is only possible through

Lord Himself. Only in unity of all in
the ecclesial being of the Church we
attain salvation.
We are responsible to participate
in our local Churches, not once
annually or only on great feasts, as
Christmas or Easter, but every Sun-
day. Every Sunday we become the
witnesses of Christs resurrection. All
liturgies invoke the gift of resur-
rection. Liturgical assemblies are
what air is for our lungs, what water
is for the fish. We cannot function
correctly, nor see clearly, in this arid

Entering the Church our respon-
sibilities become much clearer.
Confessions, partaking of the Holy
Communion, fasting, almsgiving
and all other virtues become a daily

blessed custom. If this is not done,
we are not serious Christians. Christ
has called upon us to be the light
of the world (Mt. 5, 14), shining
and presenting His grace to others,
becoming willing vehicles through
whom He acts. Christ called us not
to be merely a passing object, but to
be holy. Yes, our responsibility is to
be holy. And this is only possible by
listening and acting upon the com-
mandments, upon His life-giving
Word, by participating in brotherly
love. This is the cure to all depres-
sions, to all hate and misfortunes
that surround our modern world.
We forget that we are answerable for
our deeds and wrongdoings. We are
also accountable for not acting when
asked or when in need. Christ has
warned us that most sinful state of
our hearts is insipidity (Mt. 5, 13).

We cannot truly love and cherish
ourselves if we do not love our
neighbour. It is impossible. It is not
Christian. The term person in Greek
prosopon () is derived
from the prepositions pros, meaning
towards and ops - opos, meaning
eye, face, countenance. It could be
translated as to look or be turned
towards someone or something, a
relation and reference. (C. Yannaras,
Person and Ethos) Ergo our true
being is only understood in partici-
pation with our neighbour and our
other. Egomania and indifference is
unacceptable in the Christian realm.
Thus, we are responsible to our
neighbours, our children, parents,
and the entire humanity. Let us ask
ourselves, when was the last time I
took my child to Church? You, as

parents, are called upon to cherish
and be concerned about your child,
not only physically but also spiritu-
ally. For this and all other christian
deeds we are accountable tomorrow
when Christ comes again in all His
glory for the Holy Judgment.
As we are accountable for all human
beings, we are also called upon to
take care of what God has bestowed
us with. The universe, plants,
oceans, animals, the entire creation
has been given as a gift to overlook
as crowns of creation, yet we rather
spoil and destroy. Avariciousness
has taken over humanity, and the
greed is not ceasing. Environment
is our responsibility and how we
approach the problem is of great sig-
nificance. Lands and water are given
to us so that we live and not destroy,
the abuse needs to stop.
For each will have to bear his own
load (Gal. 6, 5), says apostle Paul.
We been given different talents.
Having gifts that differ according
to the grace given to us, let us use
them: if prophecy, in proportion to
our faith; if service, in our serving;
the one who teaches, in his teaching;
the one who exhorts, in his exhor-
tation; the one who contributes,
in generosity; the one who leads,
with zeal; the one who does acts of
mercy, with cheerfulness. (Rom.
12, 6-8). Apostle Paul teaches us to
act vigilantly with our talents, our
gifts, through which we help our
Church, our community. With such
act we are being responsible with our
God-given talents instead of wasting
them in misconduct.
Let us walk in love by obeying His
commandments (2 Jn. 1, 6). Let
us rejoice for we have received the
illumination of baptism and the
responsibility of love. With love we
begin and end all our responsibili-
ties as Christians. It is impossible to
do anything without this essential

virtue. Let us act and react on all
our actions. Let us joyously ap-
proach the gift of ecclesial unity and
community. Let us contribute to
stand fast against all adversaries and
joyously pray to overcome the temp-
tations that lure against us. Let us
take upon the Cross of life and walk
towards Christ (Mt. 16, 24), through
the marrow path towards Golgotha
and resurrection, and let us do this
responsibly. This is the beauty of
free-will that is viewed by many Fa-
thers of the Church as the image of
God in people. What glory and joy it
is to truly be responsible with all that
God has endowed us with. Let us
remind ourselves of the Kingdom to
come and the Holy Judgment where
we are all accountable to respond
with good deeds and virtues, receiv-
ing the everlasting life in unity with
our Lord and saints.

What does it mean to be Serbian?
Priest Jovan B. Marjanac
Human beings have an intrinsic
need to belong; and that seems
to be a natural and fitting feeling.
Surely there is room for speculation
on why this is so or why some
people have a need for belonging
more than others... or if this is
actually even a necessity. Be that as
it may, we are not made
of only of the dirt of the
earth, but we also func-
tion as the most complex
and wondrous being of
creation with a soul, body,
and spirit. In reality there
is no such thing as abstract
people. Human beings
always belong to some unit
of organization: a family, a
neighborhood, a country, a
nation The lack of being
associated to such units
detracts something very
important from a persons
life.
So what does it mean to
be Serbian then? Does it
mean to be the offspring
of Serbian parents? One of
the most notable Russian
saints, the Holy Great
Duchess Elizabeth was
through-and-through Ger-
man. There are many other
saints who have Hungar-
ian, Tatar, and Hebrew
heritage and yet they are
considered to be Russian
Orthodox saints. At the same time,
a person who genetically belongs to
a nation can be the biggest enemy
to his own people. The Serbian peo-
ple have known many such Serbs
who have been more volatile to our
nation than any NATO bomb could
ever be.
Does being Serbian mean to speak
and think in the Serbian language?
Anthropologically speaking that is
certainly a part of it, but it cannot
be the sole determining factor.
There are many things being put
to paper, or floated in the diverse
world of multimedia in perfectly
grammatical Serbian, with Cyrilic
font. Nonetheless such propagan-
da is quite often being authored
by people blinded by anti-Serbian
sentiment.
Does it mean to fight against the
enemies of our nation? World-
ly nationalism has a tendency
to define itself by what it stands
against. It is brought down to the
lowest common denominator of
us against them, where they are
the thieves, crooks, and bad guys.
Sometimes nationalism crosses the

line into xenophobic and chauvin-
istic ideas where everything which
is not ours must be against us. It
is undeniable that at points in our
history manipulators have taken
advantage of the Serbian people
and used this fear of the other to
lead us into periods of uncertainty.
Take away the enemies of
misconstrued nationalistic
ideas and they are left with
nothing. Transport them
to a planet where there are
no enemies and they will
declare each other to be
traitors because there is a
lack of love and patience
in their view of the world.
This however does not
disqualify the fact that some
nationalists have made great
sacrifices for their nation
and faith. Who they are will
forever be an area of dispute
for the Serbian people.
On the other hand the
glorification of a nations
saints is quite opposite to
unhealthy trends that may
arise due to racist, xenopho-
bic, or exclusivist attitudes.
Ethnic saints unify and pro-
vide beaming examples of
Christian love even toward
our enemies. Gods saints
are enemies to nobody.
They belong to a new and
unquarreling portion of the
population seeking only God. They
are those whom God has gathered
into His kingdom regardless of their
race, language they spoke, or sense
of national belonging. We know
that there are fine representatives of
the Serbian people among them.
Within the lives of the saints we see
the purpose of our nation. Their
lives help us see the common thread
which makes us different from

others. The lives of saints give justi-
fication to Serbian history, language
and culture. Our nation exists, and
deserves to exist, because of the
many saints whom it has produced
and continues to produce. In our
saints we see the eternal Gospel
and salvation for all nations, but
with a unique Serbian tone of voice
echoing of greatness and Christian
pride. Through saints our culture
has become the carrier of the Good
News.
Orthodoxy is not a national reli-
gion. It is the Truth for all people.
But we are obliged to recognize and
be thankful for the fact that Serbian
culture and history are founded on
the Orthodox Christian faith.
Nations are often recognizable
through their heroes. These are the
people that exemplify the glory of

their nation, even though it may be
limited to a certain period. Some-
times whole nations succumb to
periods of confusion and darkness,
as did the Serbian lands during the
godless communist regime. Some-
times people see the glory of their
nation in people who are worthy of
praise like scholars, poets, musi-
cians and artists. They remember
them fondly and are proud of them.
There is nothing wrong with this
but there is something better.
The best version of national
pride is when people see the
glory of their nation through
the saints that it has birthed,
because this elevates their na-
tion to a heavenly glory. When
we remember that Nikola Tesla
is one of the greatest minds of
all time and that he is a Serb
we pay homage to the earthly
glory of our people. This is
exemplary but tremendously
overshadowed by the heavenly
glory of the multitude of Serbi-
an saints who intercede on our
behalf at the altar of the Lord.
Not each of us is given the
capabilities of being a fa-
mous scholar, poet, or artist.
But each of us are given the
capabilities to serve our nation
by doing something far more
important to strive for
holiness. A nation thirsts for
saints who will with all their
heart and soul seek the Lord
and His will. Many generations
of Serbs have produced saints;
known to us they may be or
not. Surely to be Serbian can
mean that we have Serbian
parents, speak the Serbian
language, or maintain a good
grasp of patriotic political pol-
icies But first and foremost,
being Serbian should mean to
be a successor and worthy heir
to all the saints that our nation
has yielded.
