Abstract

Nowadays people often worry that children play games that isolate
them from their peers. This worry reflects two basic assumptions: First,
that games entailing interactions with peers are developmentally important
and, second, that children prefer to play games that do not entail interac-

tions with peers. This study investigates these assumptions. A literature re-
view exhibits that games entailing interactions with peers are important but
not essential for the cognitive, emotional and social development. The data
from 196 3rd and 4th graders exhibit that most children prefer such games.
Before concluding whether the aforementioned worry is justified, we need
to investigate what games children eventually play and what affects these
behaviors beside preferences.
