CHAPTER 1

BRIEF HISTORY / BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY

Julita was previously called TAMBUCO. This thriving municipality in the eastern

part of Northern Leyte got its name due to the Jesuit Missionaries who used to hire native

guides in the propagation of the Christian faith among the contiguous towns of Burauen,

Dulag, and Dagami. These friars, before their departure for Dulag, had to stop at a

certain place called Mohon where the guides usually left them to journey by themselves

to Dulag. This place where the native guides used to depart from the friars came later to

be called TAMBUCO, meaning point of departure. As time went on, this point became

a prosperous settlement rich in wild game and other products.

The first person to recognize the place was Lakatan, who accidently discovered

the fertile land conductive to the growth of almost any kind of agricultural product.

Enchanted by the beautiful place, he immediately went home and convinced his family

and friends to settle in the place he discovered. He was gradually joined by other settlers

and in 1601 it became a sitio of Dulag, and later on became one of its barrios. However,

when Dagami became an independent municipality from Dulag, Tambuco was annexed

to its as one of its barrios. Tambuco became a prosperous community, until a strong

hurricane swept over it destroying practically everything, forcing the people to migrate

to nearby places and towns. Tambuco again deteriorate into a vast wilderness.

In 1788, a road was constructed linking the town of Burauen to Dulag and

Tambuco was once more settled. Traders who travelled on foot or horseback used to

stop at Tambuco which necessitated the alteration of the name from Tambuco to

HINULATAN, meaning waiting place, for it became the sanctuary of merchants and

traders who had to stay overnight. Francisco Caladcad, with a few others, decided to

clear the abandoned place and settle there. He became the leader of the new settlers. He
was the one who initiated the movement to change the name HINULATAN to JULITA

in honor of his beautiful daughter who was born there. The young daughter grew into a

beautiful lady who was also the richest in the entire barrio. Suitors from different places

came to court the fair Julita, thus her name was used to denote the place. In 1877, Friar

Manuel Buenavente of Burauen who often visited Julita assisted the people in their

spiritual needs and constructed a little chapel. Shortly afterwards, Mateo Trinchera

became the leader of the leader of the municipality and under him Julita became a

jurisdictional barrio of Burauen. Two months later, through this ceaseless efforts, Julita

became an independent municipality. He worked at once to change the name from Julita

to San Roque in honor of the patron saint of the town. Due to financial shortcomings,

however, it became a barrio of Burauen once more and resumed its former name Julita.

It was at that time when a crusade against illiteracy was launched. A Spanish

school was established and Maestra Joaquina Anota was the former teacher. From 1901 to

1904, Aguilos became the Capitan of Julita. At this period, a church was erected on the

spot where the present Catholic Church now stands. This was followed by the building of

the two storey school building which was later destroyed by a strong typhoon. To

replace the one destroyed, another school was built in 1905 in the plaza along the road

leading to Hindang.

During the Japanese occupation, Julita was an independent puppet municipality.

But when the Philippines was liberated from the Japanese invaders, Julita returned to its

former status as barrio of Burauen. It remained a barrio until May 12, 1950 when it

became a de jure municipality, by virtue of the bill approved by congress and

inaugurated as municipality on July 4, 1950 with Juan Echon as the first Mayor.

ASSESSMENT OF PRACTICUM PROGRAM

Municipality of Julita, Municipal Budget Office this is the office where I was

assigned to conduct my On-the-Job Training. On my first day of training, I was very

excited and somewhat nervous because of the new environment and the new people

surrounding me. I didnt have any idea of what kind of people they are and it made

adjust myself with their personalities and attitudes.

My Training Supervisor accompanied me to my table where I will be staying

during my On-the-Job Training. During that moment, I felt that I was really an office boy

already having my own office chair and table.

On my first and second day which is my first week, I was asked what was my skills

and what I am capable of to do, and then one of the staff their happened to be my

neighbor, so he is the one who teaches me what was the flow of work. The first task that

my Training Supervisor asked me to do is to file the Annual Budget of Barangay

Calbasag, the following day was to encode the DOLE summary list of beneficiaries, edit

some documents, and encode a letter. My supervisor complemented me for doing it fast

and prcised.

My first and second week was really a good start and I was motivated to perform

excellently because of what I have already accomplished and because of my Supervisor

who is very jolly, accommodating and kind to me and also to the employees their too.

The following week onwards, the task that I did was almost the same, I was told to

deliver an OR and sometimes vouchers to other offices. Im enjoying every day of my

work. Everytime I go to another office I felt nervous but it helps me a lot, it helps me
exposed to different work situation. This helps me develop my professionalism in

dealing with people. There are times that they crack a joke on me and it made me smile

and felt that they treat me like one of them. It was a great experience for me and I was

really satisfied with my accomplishments. Despite the times that I was just sitting on my

chair, in front of my table, and waiting for my boss to ask me to do something, I still

learned to behave and to be alert whenever they call me abruptly.

I know that On-the-Job Training requires effort and seriousness, because it helps

me to prepare for the next chapter of my life as a professional. OJT helps me get

acquainted with the real professionals and to meet people having different positions in

the company, either high or low. Working with them made me realize how to value time,

enhance critical thinking abilities and discipline and even little things can be applied

when already working especially when dealing with people. You must be presentable,

neat and clean and always wear a smile.

It is very heartwarming thing to know that there are people who believed in me.

Im very grateful because I made them proud of what I have accomplished during my

training and they were very thankful for everything that I have helped them with.

My last week of On-the-Job Training was our LGU Olympic. Im enjoying every

game that I joined with, for this is my last moment that I am with them. The game helps us

get more acquainted and socialize with our colleagues. It develops our thinking skills

and how to work well with everyone and have a good teamwork. I was happy because I

will finally finish my training but somehow sad because I will be leaving the office where

I had lots of memories and I will be missing the people that became close to me for a

period of time.

Despite the sorrow of leaving them, I am still happy that once in my life I have met
people like them in my life who taught me things related to my chosen course, and most

importantly, they helped me to be the best that I can be. They are the ones who helped in

molding myself to be the individual I am right now. They challenged my skills, abilities

and knowledge and gave me a chance to prove myself to them.
