Theme 1: Job Interviews

Playing Games with Applicants
SHRM, August 2016

Companies already commonly use gaming principles to engage and motivate
customers and employees, like profile ratings, loyalty programs, or anything that
requires interaction from users. But game theory for recruitment has been slow
to evolve. "Organizations in the past have often considered it a gadget," said
George Vollmer, vice president of global accounts and strategic development at
Futurestep. "However, with the recent rise in digital services over the past few
years, businesses are now realizing the value of this recruitment tactic, not only
for their own benefit but for that of the candidate as well."
This is especially true for candidates raised on video games. "Millennials are
now the largest generational demographic in the U.S. workforce, and of course
they've grown up playing video games," said Jim Wexler, president of Persona
Labs, a New York City-based firm that develops games with psychometric
assessments included in them.
"The digital gamification of recruitment extends from companies creating their
own virtual simulations of what it's like to work at the company to a range of
new apps which make it easy and fun to engage with a prospective employer,"
said Jeanne Meister, co-author of the upcoming book The Future Workplace
Experience.
Games can be used to:
! Test candidates' soft and hard skills and personality traits.
! Provide applicants with job scenarios and potential career paths.
! Build the engagement of passive candidates.
! Establish an innovative and attractive brand.
! Etc.
There are many examples of games that test candidates: for example, My
Marriott Hotel, developed by Marriott International, allows candidates to
experience what it's like to manage different hotel operations. Players make
purchases on a budget, hire and train employees, and serve guests to earn points;
they are rewarded when their operation turns a profit. Similarly, Siemens
Industry launched Plantville, which simulates the experience of being a plant

3
manager while promoting brand awareness. Players must maintain the operation
of their facility while trying to improve the plant's productivity.
"Recruiters use the games to review candidates, Vollmer said, "discovering
their efforts for innovation, their capability to perform under pressure and their
problem-solving ability." And this is all done with the full cooperation of the
player. "Gamification helps disguise the application and assessment process as a
fun activity rather than a boring but necessary task, making it much more likely
to convert the top talent from just noticing a job listing into engaged candidates,"
Vollmer said.

Theme 2: Creating a Business

A New Sports Company Offers Wellness, and
Sunglasses
By MIMI VUDEC. 1, 2015

Sports culture usually revolves around competition, victory and defeat.
So its a bit strange at first to hear the terms Tom Daly and Max Vallot use
when talking about their new athletic company, District Vision:
community, participation, inclusiveness, meditation.
But the two friends, both 28, were motivated by a desire to help people
achieve the mental and physical well-being that they say has changed their
lives. A few years ago, they were working in fashion and going out a lot at
night until, as Daly says, it got a bit depressing. Vallot looked for refuge in
yoga; Daly began running.
The two launched District Vision as an umbrella for the sports and
wellness community, says Daly. Its about connecting runners, yogis and
beginners and making tools for sport physical products, meditation
series, how-to guides or meetups.
They were inspired to create specialized gear to deal with the challenges
facing the urban athlete, like the Keiichi sunglasses, a pair of sports
sunglasses that debuts today. Theyre named for one of Dalys marathoner
friends and were developed over two years in Japan, with collaboration,
encouragement and testing by runner and yogi friends along the way.
In the branding of District Vision, Daly and Vallot also spotlight the
athletes who have helped and inspired them. Their website features
mentors such as the Black Roses coach Knox Robinson and the yoga
teacher James Murphy, and invites people to train with them. The last
generation of sportswear brands was all about pushing yourself as hard as
you can and winning, says Vallot. Our generation is really not about that
anymore. We can be a supporting factor instead.

District Vision eyewear will be sold at Dover Street Market beginning on
Dec. 3 and is available now at districtvision.com.

Archery & Money
Theinfinitecurve.com, 3 November 2014

At the last Asian Games, Korean archers and coaches collectively received
almost $800,000 in bonuses from their sponsor Hyundai for the five golds, three
silvers and one bronze medal they took home.
The going rate for a gold medal is $65,000. Not bad, and apparently more than
the government bonus for Olympic gold medals in 2012although in Korea that
also gets you a monthly stipend for life. Hyundai handed out similar bonuses to
the medalists after London, and indeed Koreas big corporations step in with cash
for all kinds of Olympic sports, and become fairy godfathers to many types of
athletes.
Many nations give money for Olympic success. The top payer is Singapore, who
sent just 26 athletes to London, offering $800,000 dollars to any of their
sportsmen who took home a gold medal (although in 2012, this prize went
unclaimed). Unlike almost every country in the world, Britain pays nothing at all
for Olympic achievement.
Its not news that being an Olympic athlete is rarely a path to great wealth, but
it was somewhat depressing to read that a coaching position at Archery GB,
which required a great deal of world-class experience, only pays 20,000 a year.
For the amount of experience asked for, compared with almost any other field,
its really not much.
As for Korea, I am increasingly convinced that the main reason that that nation
dominates the sport isnt the training regime, or the talent identification system,
or the professional leaguesits the money. Half the operating budget ultimately
comes from Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia Motors.
In the early 1980s the authoritarian government leaned on their big
corporations to fund Olympic sportsspecifically, less popular sportsby giving
them tax breaks to do so. Thus began the Korean archery machine.
The governments changed, but the corporations still saw funding Olympic
sports as both an excellent overseas marketing opportunity and a useful, very
public exercise in social responsibility. The success of Korean archery and the
success of Hyundai/Kia reflect each other; a win-win situation. The
immense amount of corporate funding allows dozens of professional athletes to
develop to their fullest potential, rather than the two or three per generation in
every other country. Thats the real secret.
So, how can any other nation compete with that? I still think archery in the UK
could attract sponsorship money, because it is invariably intriguing and dramatic
to the public. The entry barriers are lower; partly because it needs much less
explaining than some other sports. World Archery has managed to pull in long-

11
term deals from a wide variety of international brands with very different
markets and brand values.
Of course, the Korean national team is the only archery team in the world with
that kind of cash carrot at the end of a non-Olympic competition, and
indeed, that kind of patronage, but it is ultimately indicative of a culture.
South East Asia highly values its Olympic sportsmen and women and sees
international achievement as a deep source of national pride, and its oligarchical
system rewards that accordingly (the Asian Games also depend on a lot of
historical rivalries). In the UK, unless you play cricket or football you receive
little more than thank you and congratulations.
The cult of the amateur is over. Unfortunately, international success in sport
needs money, spent professionally and ferociously.

Why Grumble Over NFL Salaries?

The most popular ________________ in America isn't "The Big Bang Theory" or
"NCIS" or "The Walking Dead," not even close.
The National Football League makes more than $7 billion a year from TV
________________ alone. Last season, in fact, all but four of the top 50 most-watched
shows in the country were ________________, which makes pro football the most
________________ property in entertainment history, which makes the way America
views the money earned by athletes, as opposed to actors, increasingly absurd.
Take Von Miller, a 26-year-old linebacker, who recently held out for 70 million
guaranteed dollars from the Denver Broncos. Compared to, say,
________________________________, Miller's public demands garnered very little
sympathy.
A better measuring stick for a player isn't a teacher or nurse or social worker.
It's ________________, it's A-list entertainers, it's actors because we don't really care
that three actors on "The Big Bang Theory" make $1 million an episode. We don't
debate whether ________________ deserves the 64.5 million he made last year.
In sports, our empathy toward the owners partly derives from
____________________, itself a billion-dollar industry. We no longer want to be pro
athletes. We want to be ____________________. Being a sports fan today means being a
vicarious Von Miller bargain hunter.
And to be clear, bad investments, whether it's actors or athletes, should be
called out as such. But the larger fact is that fans have always been conditioned to
______________ for teams, proxies for our hometowns and ourselves, over
individuals.
We root for billionaires over millionaires because the latter can betray us.
Players, after all, tend to just ________________ if they think their boss isn't being fair.
Players generally value ________________ when it conflicts with company goals.
Players like to believe that they deserve what the ________________ is willing to pay
them, which is to say that for all the billions flowing into sports, we still can't
relate to star athletes for a simple ironic reason.

Theme 5: Fantasy football and sports betting
The story behind sports betting
You probably remember this hilarious moment from When Harry Met Sally.

She tells you her stories, you tell her your stories

Well, this ridiculous romcom scene is indicative of a real and very serious sport,
which, believe it or not, introduced society to sport betting.

_____________________________, better known to some as pedestrianism, started in the
1800s. Aristocrats of that time had ____________, whose job it was to carry
messages from one aristocrat to another. It was only a matter of time until the
aristocrats started making ____________ on whose footman was faster, thus the
birth of sport betting as we know it.

Competitive walking grew into a real sporting event, and reached its ________ in
the 1870s and 1880s. Spectators would show up in Superbowl-like masses, to see
people walk competitively. Theyd even fill up the original Madison Square
Garden.

Sometimes races would last up to ________________, and the atmosphere was almost
festival-like. Brass bands played, vendors sold pickled eggs, maybe even some
roasted chestnuts. The competitions drew everyone, from ______________ to
____________, even regular folks.

_______________, of all things, was the drink of choice for walkers. They thought it
was a _______________, and as one would, they drank it by the bottle. And guess
what? It kind of worked. One guy walked 136 miles in just _________________.

Daily Fantasy Sports 101
If youre in the US, and alive, youve probably seen or heard ads for Fan Duel
and Draft Kings. Theyre the two biggest daily fantasy sports operators, now
valued at over $1 billion each. But just what is this virtual sports game thats
becoming an ________________________________ of big media and sports leagues?

Daily fantasy sports are basically just an ________________________________ of the

traditional season-long fantasy leagues that many Americans play with family,
friends and coworkers. In a ________________ fantasy league, you build your own
virtual sports team by taking turns ________________ real athletes. You manage the
team ________________________________, making trades along the way. In NFL contests,
players earn fantasy points for ________________, yards traveled, catches and more.
At the end, a champion team is ________________.

But in the newer daily fantasy sports contests, you commit to a team for
________________________________ or a week, and draft players within a set budget
called a _______________________________.

How do you pick the best players for your team? Its all about ________________.
For example, if you pick a really good, i.e. ________________ quarterback, you wont
have as much money to spend on defense. You also need to think about special
factors. One popular daily fantasy pick in week 1 of this NFL season is Davante
Adams, a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers. Sharp player Ed Miller says
Adams is a _____________________ for week 1. Due to his teammate Jordy Nelson's
season-ending ________________, Adams will step into a starting role. But as Adams
salary was set by the daily fantasy operators before the _______________________, he
comes super cheap. For now. That could all change next week.

Your ________________ locks up once the games have begun. At the end, winners
are crowned. They could take home a couple dollars, or a couple million dollars.
Next week, you can do it all over again with
________________________________________________.

Financial Fair Play: How clubs put Uefa on the defensive over FPP

Q |
A | FFP is a system introduced by Uefa which prevents clubs from spending
beyond their means and eradicates what the governing bodys president, Michel
Platini, once called financial doping within football. Platini believes that the
level of debt carried by many is untenable.

Q |
A | As far as 5m (3.9m) more than they earn in each of Uefas three-year
estimation periods. But there are also additional acceptable losses of up to
25.5m for that three-year period. So, in total, the best part of 30m over three
years but spending on stadium or academy infrastructure is not included.
Acceptable cost under those rules is limitless. There was already a plan to reduce
the acceptable losses after the 2017-18 season, though by precisely how much is
unclear.

Q |
A | Because Uefa has come under intense pressure from clubs, who say that the
spending limits are too severe and inflexible. Some clubs, such as Manchester
City, have always said the system protects the status quo and prevents new
owners, such as theirs, spending heavily during a short period. Clubs such as
Milan say the rules prevent them from selling their club, as owners will need
years before they can make the team successful.

Q |
A | Not really. The precise changes to the regime have not been specified but
clubs should not expect to find themselves with another 200m a year at their
disposition. The highly respected sports business lawyer Daniel Geey says the
new regime may be similar to the more flexible FFP system, which allows clubs
to spend up to 105m more than they earn over three years, so long as 90m
goes directly into a savings account. There will be other obstacles for clubs who
want to spend more than they earn. They will probably have to produce a
detailed business plan, showing how funding guarantees would be put in place,
permitting the club to get back to the acceptable losses in the short to long
term.

Q |
A | Well thats possible, actually. Geey wrote an interesting blog post in which he
calculated the price of Messi, which in the current market could actually be as
much as 500m. He showed how a buying club would possibly have to find an
extra 90m per season to fund such a purchase. So if City decided they wanted to
make a purchase which pushed them into the red, it could be done within the
new regime.

Theme 7: Buyouts, takeovers and mergers
Buy, Sell, or Join Forces?
Acquiring Another Company

If youre looking to move your business forward, you might consider the
strategic acquisition of another company.
Perhaps the owner of another business in your industry, maybe even one of
your direct competitors, is contemplating selling their business and may be
willing to sell to you at a very reasonable price.
That can be a tempting opportunityespecially if you can reduce the total costs
of running both businesses together and create more value for the combined
company.
In short, youre looking for an opportunity where the whole exceeds the sum
of the parts.
But buying another business can be risky. CEO advisor Robert Sher points
out that approximately 50% of merger and acquisition deals fail.
And Forbes contributor Frank Vermeulen suggests that percentage may be more
like 70%.
Statistics like these mean you should carefully consider both the advantages of
an acquisition and the pitfalls to avoid.

As you can see now, since Mohammed Dewji joined Simba and initiated
the plan, we are now possessing several players like Mavugo and so many
[others], and were happy with that. In the case of Mohammed Dewji, its a
good deal, because he loves Simba. And in the case of Mohammed Dewji, we
need to be a champion.

Burundian Laudit Mavugo is one of the number of new players whove
joined the club. And the coaching stars say Mohammed Dewji will be even
more of a ______________________.

I think this is all good, because you know, football these days is very
commercial, football is business, football is too commercial now, football
has been commercialized over the world, and if he is really coming in to
work around the existing members within the team, I think its gonna be
together. If they work together, its gonna be a good thing.

Simba may be an old club in Tanzania, but with a new season about to start,
its set for a new lease of life. Dan Ashby, CCTV, in Tanzania.

Worldwide Golf eyes U.S. assets of bankrupt chain Golfsmith
By Jessica DiNapoli 6 October, 2016 10:32 PM

Worldwide Golf Shops is exploring an offer for the U.S. business of bankrupt
chain Golfsmith International Holdings Inc, according to people familiar with the
situation, as the golf retail sector has to face sport's decreasing popularity.
Golfsmith suffered in part because of the decline of the so-called Tiger Woods
phenomenon. When the golf superstar's career began to diminish, some of the
many young fans he attracted to the sport also lost interest.
Golfsmith, the world's largest specialty golf retailer, declared bankruptcy in
the United States and asked for creditor protection in Canada last month, in the
middle of serious competition from discount retailers Wal Mart Stores Inc and
Amazon.com Inc. Golfsmith's owner is OMERS Private Equity Inc, the buyout
branch of one of Canada's largest pension funds.
Golfsmith, which has 109 stores across the United States, declared bankruptcy
with a plan to find a buyer for its U.S. business, reorganize on a smaller level or
liquidate, according to court documents. Offers for Golfsmith's U.S. business end
on Oct. 17, and an auction is scheduled for two days later, with the goal of closing
a sale before the start of the holiday season, according to court documents.
Golfsmith is already closing down some stores to save money.
It is not yet clear if Worldwide Golf is interested by the entire U.S. business of
Golfsmith or individual assets, the people said this week. There are also financial
investors interested in the U.S. business of Golfsmith, one of the people added.
The sources asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential.
Worldwide Golf did not respond to a request for comment.
A Delaware bankruptcy court judge on Thursday approved the auction process
for the company. "The court approval today goes in the same direction as our
efforts to restructure Golfsmith and improve its long-term viability," a Golfsmith
representative said.
For its Canadian business, Golfsmith last month announced a deal to sell its
shops, operating under the name Golf Town, to a group led by Fairfax Financial
Holdings Ltd and CI Investments Inc. Worldwide Golf operates golf shops under
the names Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Van's Golf Shops, Golfers' Warehouse and
others across 19 U.S. states, mostly in the West. Golfsmith merged with Golf
Town in 2012 in an effort to grow. That deal, however, left it with too many
stores and a debt pile of $195 million when it declared bankruptcy.
