Title: Estimating Building Materials by the Use of Mathcad or Spreadsheet

EXERCISE No.
(CEng 157)

Vision: The premier university of science and technology in the Visayas.

Mission: Provide excellent instruction, conduct relevant research and foster community engagement that produce highly competent graduate necessary for
the development of the country.
Using Mathcad or Spreadsheet, estimate the materials (steel rebars, cement, sand, and gravel) for a two storey building
shown in the figure.

Vision: The premier university of science and technology in the Visayas.

Calculation Procedure used on the MatCad (Image =>)
Solving for Volumes:
*Vol. for Foundation
tf= nf x f where:
tf = total vol. for footings
nf = total number of footings
f = vol. of per footing
*Vol. for Lean Concrete
tlc= nf x lc where:
tlc = total vol. for lean conrete
nf = total number of footings
lc = vol. per lean conrete
*Vol. for Beams
tb= nb x b where:
tb = total vol. for beams
nb = total number of beams
b = vol. per beam
*Vol. for Columns
tc= nc x c where:
tc = total vol. for columns
nc = total number of columns
c = vol. per column

the development of the country.
*Vol. for Slabs

ts= ns x s where:
ts = total vol. for slabs
ns = total number of slabs
s = vol. per slab

*Total Vol. for Concrete (2000psi)

TV1= tlc where:

TV1 = total vol. for lean concrete

tlc = sum of tot. lean concrete

*Total Vol. for Concrete (3000psi)

TV2= tf where:

TV2 = total vol. for footings

tf = sum of tot. footings

*Total Vol. for Concrete (4000psi)

TV3= (tb+tc+ts) where:

TV3 = total vol. for beams,

columns, and slabs
tlc = sum of tot. tb,tc, & ts

*Total Vol. for Rebars

R= 0.10TV2 + 0.20tb + 0.20tc + 0.15ts2 + 0.05ts1

where:
0.10TV2 = 10% of the vol. of foundation
0.20tb = 20% of the summation of vol. of beams

0.20tc = 20% of the vol. of columns

0.15ts2 = 15% of the vol. of slab (2nd and 3rd floor)
0.05ts1 = 5% of the vol. of groundfloor slab

Total Volume w/ 10% wastage (m3 ) 146.40 320.91 497.43
TOTAL ESTIMATE:
Total Volume of Sand: 321 m3
Total Volume of Gravel: 498 m3
Total No. of bags of cement:
Tot. No. of bags = 146.40 m3 x 3.5 x 1000kg/ m3 x (1bag/ 40 kg)
Tot. No. of bags = 12,810 bags (4o kgs)

Total Weight of steel bar : (including 5% of wastage)

Tot. Weight of steel bar = 1.05 x 19.466 m3 x 7850kg/ m3 x (1 ton/ 1000kg)
Tot. Weight of steel bar = 160.45 tons
