tectonic plate
the two sub-layers of the earth's crust (lithosphere) that move, float, and sometimes fracture and whose
interaction causes continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and oceanic trenches
earthquake
A.a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks in which
elastic strain has been slowly accumulating.
tsunami
A.an unusually large sea wave producted by a seaquake or undersea volcanic eruption.
avalanche
1.a large mass of snow, ice, etc., detached from a mountain slope and sliding or falling suddenly downward
torndo
1.a localized, violently destructive windstorm occurring over land, especially in the Middle West, and
characterized by a long, funnel-shaped cloud extending toward the ground and made visible by condensation
and debris.
2.a violent squall or whirlwind of small extent, as one of those occurring during the summer on the west
coast of Africa.
erosion
2.the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves,
etc.
tectonic earthquake
volcanic earthquake
Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release
of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are
rubbing against each other, they stick a little.
