Heddon made.. . well made JAMES HEDDON ‘CHARLES HEDDON ‘Founder FOR Three Generations Heddon has meant finer fishing tackle HORTLY before the tum of the century, James Heddon, an angler of the school of Van Dyke, Henshall, and Holder, was sitting on a log beside a clear, slow-flowing bass stream, awaiting his companion. Idly he whittled a piece of wood and tossed it on the calm waters. The bottom exploded, and the plug he had whittled, surrounded by a spray of water, was knocked high into the oir by the vicious strike of a bass. ‘Than and there, on the banks.of Dowagise Creek, the Heddon’s Sons was born. m of James The aims of the Company ware simple, first, to make tackle that would catch fish, and secondly, to make it es fine as humanly possible, Although started in a emall way, it was necessary by 1902 to erect a | factory, the first ever to produce artificial baits on # volume basis. The active management was take over by James Heddon’s son, Charles Heddon, By adhering strictly to the basic principles of producing only the finest of rods, and baits that would catch fith, he created a demand for Heddon products so strong that it has never been fully met by the constantly expanding factory's production. Today, Heddon of Dowagiac is the largest producer of ertificial baits and CUSTOM BUILT rods in the world. Heddon tackle is known in the far corners of the earth, wherever the disciples of Izaak Walton gather. Under the direction and management of the late Charles Heddon’s son, John Heddon, the business continues on the principle of producing only the finest tackle for anglers who really appreciate the best. A Seale er etn iota ss The selection of a well-balanced and rounded-out assortment of baits, that will Produce consistent results, often presents quite @ problem to those who are taking up angling for the first time. Certain baits catch fish when others fail because of variations in color, action, depth of travel, and size. Hence a basic sssort- ment for successful fishing must include at least one of includes baits in three general clessifica- tions, SINKING, FLOATING-DIVING, and SURFACE baits OMBING 34i7S— Baits in this classification are ones which sink slowly and travel under ‘¢ water when retrieved, depth depending upon the speed of reeling. Some have lips te give them a swimming, wiggling motion ‘and others have spinners or spoons which revolve and create a flash. Another type of sinking lure is the “Go-Deeper.” This is a fast-sinking bait with an oversized lip ‘which causes it to go deep and stay deep. It is particularly effective during summer months when fish are in deep water. A well-balanced assortment of these lures ‘would be one or more of the slowly-sinking lures with a lip (selected from numbers 9010, 9020, 9110, #330 or 730 series), one or more of the type with spinners or spoons (selected from numbers 130, 150 or 9100 ries) and one or more of the “Go Deeper type (selected from numbers D 9010 or D 9110 series). Other sinking lures, designed especially for fishing extremely weedy waters, are the spoons and pork rind lures (such es numbers 190, 280 and 290 series), and the “Stanley less Hook" se type float when at rest, but when retrieved, they dive under water about one foot. A wiggling motion is given the bait by the means of a metal lip or notched head. These ures are designed especially for shallow water of waters where weeds are close to WLEL 00 HOW TO SELECT THEM the surface. Three or more lures of this type are advisable (selected from numbers 9400, 9750, 2500, F 4000, 7300, 7500, 8500 or 8340 series), in light, medium and dark colors. SURFACT 2A(TS — Surface or “topwater” baits slways float upon the surface of the water and remain there during the retrieve. Baits of this type are particularly effective in the early morning and late evening, when the fish come into the feed. There are a number of diffe ‘of surface baits, some have a concave or slightly notched head (such ss numbers ‘9540, 9210 or J 220 series), others have wings, flappers, collars or spinners which create a commotion on the water (such as numbers ‘9140, 210, 2120, 7000 or 140 series). Others are cigar shaped and depend upon the skill of the angler to give them an erratic, dart- ing motion (such as numbers 9250 and 6500 series). One each of these thres models is advisable, in varying degrees of color. coro ‘This covers the general field of baits and the successful angler will have « few each of these different styles in his tackle box in order to cope with practically all cor tions encountered in a day's fishing. In selecting the different styles of sinking, floating - diving, and surface baits, choose the different styles in different colors, some light and some dark ones, for, at times, light colored baits will produce when dark col- fored onet will not, and vice versa, Other types of lures not dealt with above fe those designed for large pike and mus- lunge and large saltwater fish (such as numbers 7050, 7350 and 7550 series), special Salmon lures (such az number 8350 and 6550 series) and lures for saltwater bait casting (such as numbers L-10, 30 and 610 series). In th use of all lures, bait manipulation is of the utmost importance and often accounts {or the difference between a successful day’ fishing and one that is not.
