FOREWORD
The Iranian Petroleum Standards (IPS) reflect the
views of the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum and
are intended for use in the oil and gas production
facilities, oil refineries, chemical and
petrochemical plants, gas handling and processing
installations and other such facilities.
IPS is based on internationally acceptable
standards and includes selections from the items
stipulated in the referenced standards. They are
also supplemented by additional requirements
and/or modifications based on the experience
acquired by the Iranian Petroleum Industry and
the local market availability. The options which
are not specified in the text of the standards are
itemized in data sheet/s, so that, the user can
select his appropriate preferences therein.
The IPS standards are therefore expected to be
sufficiently flexible so that the users can adapt
these standards to their requirements. However,
they may not cover every requirement of each
project. For such cases, an addendum to IPS
Standard shall be prepared by the user which
elaborates the particular requirements of the user.
This addendum together with the relevant IPS
shall form the job specification for the specific
project or work.
The IPS is reviewed and up-dated approximately
every five years. Each standards are subject to
amendment or withdrawal, if required, thus the
latest edition of IPS shall be applicable
The users of IPS are therefore requested to send
their views and comments, including any
addendum prepared for particular cases to the
following address. These comments and
recommendations will be reviewed by the relevant
technical committee and in case of approval will
be incorporated in the next revision of the
standard.

GENERAL DEFINITIONS:
Throughout this Standard the following
definitions shall apply.
COMPANY:
Refers to one of the related and/or affiliated
companies of the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum
such as National Iranian Oil Company, National
Iranian Gas Company, National Petrochemical
Company and National Iranian Oil Refinery And
Distribution Company.
PURCHASER:
Means the "Company" where this standard is a
part of direct purchaser order by the “Company”,
and the “Contractor” where this Standard is a part
of contract documents.
VENDOR AND SUPPLIER:
Refers to firm or person who will supply and/or
fabricate the equipment or material.
CONTRACTOR:
Refers to the persons, firm or company whose
tender has been accepted by the company.
EXECUTOR:
Executor is the party which carries out all or part of
construction and/or commissioning for the project.
INSPECTOR:
The Inspector referred to in this Standard is a
person/persons or a body appointed in writing by
the company for the inspection of fabrication and
installation work
SHALL:
Is used where a provision is mandatory.
SHOULD:
Is used where a provision is advisory only.
WILL:
Is normally used in connection with the action by
the “Company” rather than by a contractor,
supplier or vendor.
MAY:
Is used where a provision is completely
discretionary.

0. INTRODUCTION
This Standard gives technical specifications and
general requirements for the purchase of
"Centrifugal Pumps for Petroleum, Petrochemical,
and Natural Gas Industries", which is based on
API Standard 610, tenth edition October 2004 and
shall be read in conjunction with that document.
Guidance for Use of this Standard
The amendments/supplement to API Standard 610
given in this Standard are directly related to the
equivalent sections or clauses in API Standard
610. For clarity, the section and paragraph
numbering of API Standard 610 has been used as
long as possible. Where clauses in API are
referenced within this Standard, it shall mean
those clauses are amended by this Standard.
Clauses in” API” that are not amended by this
Standard shall remain valid as written.
The following annotations, as specified
hereunder, have been used at the button right hand
side of each clause or paragraph to indicate the
type of change made to the equivalent clause or
paragraph of API.
Sub. (Substitution): The clause in API shall be
deleted and replaced by the new clause in this
Standard.
Del. (Deletion): The clause in API shall be
deleted without any replacement.
Add. (Addition) : The new clause with the new
number shall be added to the relevant section of
API.
Mod. (Modification): Part of the clause or
paragraph in API shall be modified and/or the
new description and/or statement shall be added
to that clause or paragraph as given in this
Standard

1. SCOPE
This standard contains the minimum requirements
for centrifugal pumps for use in refinery services,
chemical, gas, petrochemical plants and where
applicable, in exploration, and production.
Compliance with the provisions of this standard
does not relieve the vendor of his responsibility of
furnishing centrifugal pump of proper design,
mechanically suited to meet operating guarantees
at the specified service conditions. No deviations
or exceptions from this standard shall be
permitted, without explicit approval of the
Company.
Intended deviations shall be separately listed by
the vendor, supported by reasons thereof and
submitted for the Company's consideration.

3.61 Hazardous Services
Any service in one or more of the following
categories:
Category 1:
1. Liquids containing hydrogen sulphide in
concentrations above 600 mg/kg.
Liquids consisting of or containing, lethal
substances as indicated in the data/requisition
sheet. Examples of lethal substances include, but
are not limited to, HF acid, phenol, concentrated
sulphuric or nitric acid.
Category 2:
1. Liquids consisting of, or containing, toxic
substances as indicated in the data/requisition
sheet. Examples of toxic substances include, but
are not limited to, benzene, toluene, MEK,
ethylene oxide.
2. Hydrocarbon liquids at an operating
temperature above their auto-ignition temperature.

4.2 Pump Designations

Note:
Usage of pump type BB4 shall be limited as far as
possible and shall not be used for applications
handling flammable, hazardous and toxic fluid or
for boiler feed pump. (Mod)
4.3 Units and Governing Requirements
4.3.1 Data, drawings, hardware and maintenance
dimensions of pumps shall be in the SI system of
measurements and requirements of IPS-E-GN-
100 shall be followed. Use of an ISO Standard
data sheet (see Annex N, Figure N.1) indicates the
SI system of measurements shall be used.

4.4 CONFLICTING REQUIREMENTS
In the case of conflict between documents relating
to the inquiry or order, the following priority of
documents shall apply:
- First Priority: Purchase order and variations
thereto.
- Second Priority: Data sheets and drawings.
- Third Priority: This Standard.
All conflicting requirements shall be referred to
the Purchaser in writing. The Purchaser will issue
confirmation document if needed for clarification.

5. BASIC DESIGN
5.1 General
5.1.10 Replace the second paragraph of this
clause by:
The Net Positive Suction Head Available
(NPSHA) shall exceed the Net Positive Suction
Head Required (NPSHR) by at least 1 meter
throughout the range from minimum continuous
stable flow up to and including the rated capacity.
If the suction pressure at the pump is less than
atmospheric, this margin shall be at least 2
meters. From rated capacity up to 125% of best
efficiency point the NPSHR shall not exceed the
NPSHA. (Mod)
5.1.13 Pumps shall have stable head/flow rate
curves which continuously rise by at least 5%
from rated capacity to shut-off. The gradient of
the tangent to the curve shall continuously
decrease from 125% of the best efficiency point
to minimum continuous stable flow and shall
remain positive.
If parallel operation is specified, the head rise
from rated point to shutoff shall be at least 10 %.
Using discharge orifice as a means of providing a
continuous rise to shutoff is subject to Company's
approval. (Sub)
5.1.16 Pumps shall be designed & manufactured
to minimize the generation of noise and shall not
exceed the noise limits given in the following
table, at 1m from the equipment surface.

5.11 Lubrication
5.11.2 Where a pressure lubrication system is
specified, the system shall be designed in
accordance with API 614 and IPS-M-PM-320

5.12 Materials
5.12.1 General
5.12.1.1 Materials not in accordance with Annex
G, Table G.1 shall be specifically highlighted in
the proposal as a deviation from the purchaser
specification. Explanation for the deviation(s) and
stated experience(s) with the proposed materials
in the service quoted shall be detailed in the
proposal (see 2.11.1.2 below). No copper or
copper alloys are permitted. (Mod)
5.12.1.2 Material shall be identified by reference
to applicable international standards such as
ASTM, ASME, DIN, BS including the material
grade (Table H.2 and H.3 may be used for
guidance). (Mod)
5.12.1.8 Vendor shall furnish material certificates
that include chemical analysis and mechanical
properties for the heats from which the material is
supplied for pressure-containing castings and
forgings, impellers and shafts. Unless otherwise
specified, piping nipples, auxiliary piping
components, and bolting are excluded from this
requirement. Supplier shall make available for the
Purchaser inspectors, all documentation available
on furnished casting including purchasing
specifications, shipping documents, and material

5.12.1.15 Pumps handling sea water or brine
above 40°C (104°F) Contaminated with oil and
H2S shall be fabricated in a super duplex stainless

5.12.3 Welding
5.12.3.2 The following are required for repair of
pressure retaining castings:
• Standard procedure for casting repairs shall be
submitted to purchaser for approval prior to
start of the casting repair.
• Un-acceptable imperfections shall be removed
and their complete removal shall be verified by
additional examination.
• After repair by welding has been made, the
finished surfaces of all repair welds shall be
inspected according to the same quality
standard required for the original casting.
• The casting defect that constitutes any of the
following shall be considered as a major defect;
a) having leaked on hydrostatic test due to
the defects
b)The depth of any cavity prepared for repair
by welding exceeds 20% of the wall
thickness, or 25 mm, whichever is the lower.
c)Any cavity prepared for welding is greater

than approximately 65000 mm (10 in ) in
area.
• For major defects, defect and repair maps
shall be prepared and submitted to the purchaser
for his review prior to start of the repairs. On
this map the extent and location of the defect
and details of the repair procedure shall be
indicated.
• Welding repairs of major detects, for pressure-
retaining castings shall be stress relieved, heat-
treated after welding and radio-graphed.

6.1 Drivers
6.1.3 Motors as the pump drivers shall be in

7. INSPECTION, TESTING AND
PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT
7.1 General
7.1.8 The vendor shall operate a quality
management system to ensure that the technical
requirements of this Standard are achieved.
Purchaser may require demonstration of the
quality system, but this may be waived if the
system has been verified recently by an
accreditation scheme acceptable to purchaser.
The vendor shall ensure that QA requirements
specified in the enquiry and purchase documents
are applied to all materials, equipment and
services provided by sub-contractors and to any

7.1.9 Purchaser's representative shall have the
right to reject any parts of equipment which do
not conform to the Purchase Order. (Add)

The inspection class for pump casings shall be

Having determined the inspection class, the
material inspection requirements are given in
Table A below and the subsequent Notes. The
methods and acceptance criteria for radiographic,
ultrasonic, magnetic-particle or liquid-penetrant
examination of the welds or materials is specified
shall be in accordance with the standards shown
in Table 13 of API 610, 10th edition.
Requirements of visual inspection of the welds or
materials shall be comply with 7.2.2.1.3 (Add)

2."Casing" includes all items of the pressure
boundary of the finished pump casing (e.g. the
casing itself and other parts such as nozzles,
flanges, etc. attached to the casing). "Critical
areas" are inlet nozzle locations, outlet nozzle
locations, casing wall thickness changes and
packing seal areas. The Manufacturer shall
submit, for Purchaser's approval, details of the
critical areas proposed to receive MT/PT/RT/UT.
3."Wrought" material includes forgings, plate and
tubulars.

4.Timing of inspection
-VI/MT/PT shall be performed after final heat
treatment (not necessarily after stress relieving
for carbon steel material) in the final machined
condition.
-RT/UT of castings shall be performed after
final heat treatment (not necessarily after stress
relieving) but need not be in the final machined
condition provided that the thickness is within
20 percent of the final thickness. In any case the
radiographic sensitivity indicator (e.g.
penetrameter) shall be selected based on the
final thickness.
-RT of welds and UT of wrought material and
welds shall be performed after final heat
treatment (not necessarily after stress relieving).
UT of wrought material shall be performed
prior to any machining operations (e.g.
keyways, drilled holes etc.) which may interfere
with the UT examination.
5 -Liquid penetrant inspection shall be employed
only when magnetic particle inspection is not
feasible.
6 -Ultrasonic inspection shall be employ when
radiography is not feasible, and its application
shall always be considered when section thickness
exceeds 50 mm. (Add)
7.2.2.1.3 Visual Inspection (VI) shall be
performed in accordance with ASME V, Article
9. All surfaces shall be inspected. Acceptance
criteria for pressure-containing steel castings shall
be in accordance with MSS SP-55. Acceptance
criteria for other parts shall be in accordance with
the material specification and the Manufacturer's
documented procedures. (Add)

7.3.3 Performance test
7.3.3.1 Performance test shall include one hour
continuous running for mechanical checks. The
mechanical checks shall be carried out after
thermal stabilization conditions have been

7.3.3.6 Variable speed pumps shall be tested
additionally at other speeds (operating points)
specified in data/requisition sheets including
maximum continuous speed and minimum

7.3.3.7 When pumps are fitted with hydrodynamic
thrust bearings, axial loads shall be measured
during the performance test. The flow rates at
which axial loads are to be measured shall be
subject to agreement between purchaser and the
vendor, but should normally be shutoff, minimum
continuous stable flow, midway between
minimum and rated flow, and 125% of rated flow.
For variable speed units, axial loads shall be
measured at maximum continuous speed and
minimum continuous speed. (Add)
7.3.4 Optional tests
7.3.4.2 NPSHR test
7.3.4.2.1 NPSHR test shall be performed at each
test point [7.3.3.3 a)] except shut-off, unless
otherwise specified by the purchaser. (Sub)
7.3.4.3 Complete unit test
All pumps shall be tested at rated speed, in cases
where such testing is impractical because of
excessive pressure generation, excessive power
requirements or because of pump length (vertical
pumps), the vendor shall submit alternative

7.3.4.4 Sound level test
Sound level tests shall be performed in
accordance with IPS-G-SF-900. (Sub)
7.4 Preparation for Shipment
