Disassembly Instructions
1) Remove Grub Screw (06) from the Lock Ring (09). Whilst gripping the Jar Rod Housing to
prevent it from turning, attempt to back-off the Lock Ring if it should prove to be tight do not force
it. If the Lock Ring does not come free grip both the Main Housing (02) and Lock Ring together, to
prevent them turning relative to each other, now gripping the Jar Rod Housing turn it slightly in both
directions until a slackness is felt and or Lock Ring becomes free. Once a slackness is felt do not
turn the Jar Rod Housing any further, hold it in that position relative to the Main Housing and
back-off the Lock Ring.
Should for any reason it become difficult to back-off the Jar Rod Housing from the Main Housing,
without having first removed the Lock Segment, simply grip the Main Housing securely i.e. in a vice
and with a strap wrench or similar back-off Jar Rod Housing anti-clockwise. The teeth of the Lock
Segment are designed to shear-off in this situation, thus allowing disassembly, without causing
damage to jar components. Note: New Lock Segments are contained in every Redress Kit and are
also available separately.
2) Unscrew the bottom section of the Jar from the Main Housing. Remove Trip Keys (Item 03).
3) Remove the Roll Pin (07) from the QLS X-Over (04) and unscrew from the Jar Rod (Item 01).
The Jar Rod can now be removed from the Main Housing (take care at this stage as the Steel Balls
(08) may fall free from the Jar Rod). Remove the Steel Balls.
4) Using a 1/4" dia punch remove the Shear Stock from the Trip Sleeve (11) & Upper Spring Stop
(12). Keeping the Punch in place, remove the Bottom Sub (19). Place another 1/4" dia punch
through the Lower Spring Stop (15) and back off and remove the Trip Sleeve and Upper Spring
Stop along with the Coil Spring (18).
5) The Spring Rod (13) assembly along with the Disk Springs (16) and Stack Regulator (14) can
now be removed from the Spring Jar Housing assembly.
6) The spring stack at this point should be check and replace as required.
Maintenance Instructions
- Coat all threads with copperslip after each usage.
Assembly Instruction
1/ Thread the Lower Spring Stop (15) to the Spring Rod (13). Then secure with Roll Pin (17).
Apply copper slip to the Rod and assemble the Lower Spring Stack (32 Disc Springs, set-up in
singles) see Fig : 001. Coat springs with copper slip. See Sketch ’A’. (Ref: A401-2125-009-2).
2/ Locate the Spring Protector (14) followed by the Upper Spring stack (99 Disc Springs, set-up in
triples) see Fig : 001. Coat springs with copper slip. See Sketch ’B’. (Ref : A401-2125-009-2).
3/ The Spring Housing Sub Assembly should be made-up as follows; Place one Elastomer (22) into
the groove at the back end of the thread on the End Piece (21) and the second Elastomer (22) at the
back end of thr thread in the Jar Rod Housing (20). Then thread the End Piece to the Jar Rod.
4/ Place assembled Spring Rod through the Spring Housing Sub Assembly. Place the Coil Spring
(Item 18) down over the Spring Rod, then locate the Trip Sleeve (11) over the Upper Spring Stop
(12) then temporarily hold together with a punch. With the use of a second punch through the hole in
the Lower Spring Stop, thread the Upper Spring Stop to the Spring Rod. Align and secure with Roll
Pin (17).
5/ Remove the both punch’s. Install 1/4"dia x 1.500"L Shear Stock through the Trip Sleeve and into
the Upper Spring Stop. Ensure that the shear stock is centralised within the Trip Sleeve.
Thread the Bottom Sub (19) to the Jar Rod Housing. Slip the Lock Ring down over the above
assembly and thread fully onto the Jar Rod until it butts out, Note: Do Not Tigthen.
6/ Slip the Jar Rod (01) part way up into the Main Housing (02). Apply clean grease into each of the
six pockets, then install one Steel Ball (08) into each pocket. Continue to push the Jar Rod into the
Main Housing until the top end is visable. Thread the QLS X-Over (04) to the Jar Rod and secure
with Roll Pin (07).
7/ With a little clean grease install the three Trip Keys (10) into the Trip Sleeve. then thread the Jar
Rod Housing assembly up into the Main Housing untill the required spring force setting is reached.
Install the Lock Segment (03) through the pocket in the Main Housing and into the Jar Rod Housing
ensuring that the teath aer fully engaged. Thread the Lock Ring back over the Lock Segment and
secure with Grub Screw (06).
8/ To activate the Easy Adjust Jar simply push down on the QLS X-Over/Jar Rod to latch onto the
Trip Keys inside the Trip Sleeve.
Calibration
Spring Stack
The E.A.J. contains two Spring Stacks to give greater control at the lower settings. Spring life in the
E.AJ. has been greatly increased due to the fact that the Springs are only under load when the jar is
fired.
If the Spring Stacks are disassembled for any reason they should be reassembled as shown in
sketches "A" and "B" (shown on dwg A401-2125-009-2) refer to Assembly section of data book.
Should the used Springs be exchanged with brand new Springs the Jar should be assembled and
fired off several times at its maximum setting in order to bed the new Springs in. This is normally
done for every new Jar at Petroline’s premises.
After this bedding in procedure a check should be carried out using the Calibrator Sub to establish
that calibration settings stamped on the Housing still correspond with values obtained by firing the
Jar with Calibrator Sub. If it proves difficult to obtain lower settings, after having replaced the
Spring Stack, then single Springs should be removed from the top of the large Stack.
Lock Segment
The Lock Segment is purposely machined from aluminium alloy and is designed such that should
problems be encountered in disassembling the Tool the Lock Segment will shear, thus allowing free
and easy disassembly. This prevents any damage occurring to the more complex components of the
Jar. These Lock Segments are included as part of the Redress Kit and are also available separately
from Petroline.

* Care must be taken at higher settings to ensure that line pull will not exceed wire strength.
