ABSTRACT

Upon the researchers’ observation, Facebook is beneficial to one’s social life because a

person can continually stay in contact with friends and relatives, while others say it can cause

increased antisocial tendencies because people are not communicating verbally with each other.

Particularly students are a main class of Facebook users who spend long hours on social

networks which had worried parents and educational authorities about their academic

performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on Facebook, as a leisure activity

does not undermine their academic efforts, though some evidence suggests that their grades

decline after they join Facebook.

In this school, the researchers observed that the new generation was addicted to

Facebook in which sometimes they gave much time for it than their studies. Others even stay

outside the school library or any other building with internet access to be able to connect to the

Wi-Fi for surfing Facebook even if they have class schedules. Others also escape from a class

just to be updated with what’s happening in the social media. Because of the Facebook

application, many students were affected especially the grade that they earn.

I. SITUATION

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Facebook being the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million

active users on its website every month. It emerged on February 4, 2004 when a

nineteen- year old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zuckeburg founded the

revolutionary site to connect Harvard University students (Grossman, 2010). But

later, this site allows more users to build the social networks with hundreds or even

thousands of people around the world of which university students are one of the

primary demographics using Facebook, with features such as photos, wall, posts, and

status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those who want to connect with

their friends (Gold, 2011).

Even though Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users,

university students are still its biggest fans. Results from a recent paper of Ellison et

al (2007) reported that 94% of college students are active users spending 60- 90

minutes online each day communicating with their friends list of 150- 200 people.

Similarly, Wiley and Sisson (2006) conducted a large survey on college students from

universities in the developing countries and indicated that 91% of students use the

application. Ethiopia, as one of the developing countries was seen with around one

million intoxicated users of Facebook in which half were in higher education

(Kassashow, 2012).

Facebook is the largest social network on the web, behind only MySpace in terms

of traffic. Primarily focused on high school to college students, Facebook has been

gaining market share, and more significantly a supportive user base. Since their

7
launch in February 2004, they’ve been able to obtain over 8 million users in the U.S.

alone and expand worldwide to seven other English – speaking countries, with more

to follow. A large number of surveys and studies have been conducted around

Facebook – some with interesting reports. For instance, According to an internal

September 2005 survey, approximately 85% of the students in the supportive colleges

had a Facebook account, with 60% of them logging in daily (google.com).

Facebook, however greatly affects so many aspects of the human life especially to

high school students. It encompasses our mental, social, financial and even physical

aspects.

Health falls to the physical being of a person. In a report published by Everyday

Health Media (2017), there are several benefits you can get from Facebook as well as

its negative bringing. The report shows that Facebook can “fuel self- esteem” when

students “update their Fb profiles.” As studied by the Cornell University, “the very

act of posting something about yourself can boost your self- confidence because you

control the image you present to your network of friends.” It helps also people

strengthen their socialization since it “strengthen friendship bonds.” The researchers

of Lancaster University found that “the site cement positive interaction among

friends.” It also helped to “stamp out shyness and loneliness” since Moira Burke, a

Ph.D. stated that “people who are uncomfortable chatting face to face gain more

through their use of the site.” Though at this side, Facebook was beneficial, there are

some risk it might bring to us. Research also shows that Facebook can “cause

depression when tweens and teens spend too much time on social media, leading

them to turn to substance abuse, unsafe sexual practices, or aggressive behavior”

(American Academy of Pediatrics). It is also evident when Israeli researchers found

8
out that “the more the time young girls spent on the social networking site, the more

they were likely to develop eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and extreme

dieting.” This was due to the influence of what they can see while streaming the site.

Moving on to the mental aspect, study shows that using social media can affect

our mental health. According to an article posted on March 2017 entitled Mental

Health and the Effects of social Media, 60 % reported that they feel jealousy from

comparing themselves to the other users. In a 2015 study, researchers at the

University of Missouri discovered “that regular use could lead to symptoms of

depression if the site triggered feelings of envy.” It is the pressure caused to them

when see those who standout in posting attractive posts in the site. Because of this,

they tend to “edit and post their most attractive pictures… to improve other’s

impression of them.” This will just totally trigger depression upon us if we will push

ourselves to be compared with others. That’s why, Jim Stovall suggested that “we

must be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their

successes and encourage them in their pursuits.”

If the negative effects mentioned above will not be given proper attention,

students will ultimately be carried away thereby setting aside their studies and a

decline of their academic performance will be inevitable.

Amid every benefit we can get from the social media there are still the negative

effects lurking around ready to engulf us. After all, it’s thereby concluded that in

every action we take, there is always a positive and negative result. It depends upon

us therefore on how we protect ourselves through balancing situations at stake.

9

VII. HYPOTHESES AND STATISTICAL TOOL

Null Hypothesis (Ho)

In this study, the researchers will hypothesize that the academic performance of

the students using Facebook in Buenavista National High School had an average

grade of less than 85 with a 90 % confidence level.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)

In this study, the researchers will hypothesize that the academic performance of

the students using Facebook in Buenavista National High School had an average

grade of greater than or equal to 85 with a 90 % confidence level.

VIII. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

As the survey was conducted, the following figures show the results being obtained.

Figure 1. Time Spending

Never, 5% Undecided,
1%

Always,
40%

Sometimes,
54%

The figure being shown above is about the time spent by the respondents on using

Facebook. The results said that the majority responded “Sometimes” to the question whether

they use it for more than three hours in a day with 54%.

Figure 2. Academic Relevance

Undecided, Always,
4.26% 7.59%
Never,
29.44%

Sometimes
, 58.70%

Figure 2 corresponds to Questions 3, 4 & 5 in the survey which ask whether all

newsfeeds and information they can get from Facebook and particularly the app itself, may

have significance and relation to their class which could be of great help. Still, a majority of

respondents said that it was helpful “sometimes.”

19
Figure 3. Academic Impact

Undecided, Always, 6%
3.06%

Never,
35.69%

Sometimes
, 54.58%

The third figure now tells us the impact of Facebook to their academic

performance. In the survey, respondents were asked if the app and using it helped them

improve their grades or not, unwind pressures in school or have slow down their focus.

“Sometimes” is still the leading answer with 54.58%.

The general average grade of the respondents for their first semester were

gathered and tested by the statistical tools. It resulted to a Mean of 87.33 which was

higher than the Expected Mean of 85 by 2.33 in difference with a Standard Deviation of

4.28.

Further hypothesis testing by the Z- test extracted a score of 7.30, which when

located in a Standard Normal Curve belongs to the Rejection Region since the Critical

value was at -1.28 to the left of the curve.

Therefore, the Null Hypothesis was rejected and accepts the Alternative.

20
IX. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of Findings

Upon showing the figures above, it brought a collective response of “sometimes”

for the topic about Time Spending, Academic Relevance, and Academic Impact of

Facebook.

Since the hypotheses were already tested by the Z- Test showing that the Null

statement was rejected and accepted the Alternative hypothesis, the students’ average

grade were greater than or equal to 85.

Conclusion

The researchers of this study therefore conclude that Facebook has no adverse

effect to the academic performance of the Senior High School Students. It is further

concluded that due to their being good at multi-tasking was the reason they can

handle being users of Facebook and at the same time performers of tasks in school,

which were evident in the data gathered.

21
Recommendation

The researchers recommend that using Facebook inside the school campus shall

never be discouraged but should be helped promoted in a more reasonable manner.

Since Facebook was a technological advancement and was now helpful to our 21st

Century Learners, be it possible if the school shall conduct school- based

seminars/workshops, lectures, and/or forums educating students to become

responsible users or if ever, encourage instructors to incorporate it in every class

discussion giving them insights about its positive and negative effects.

22
X. REFLECTION

This research was never an easy task after all, especially that it now became part of

the curriculum in the Senior High School and there’s no way of escaping it for the goal of

taking a diploma. In one way or another, it has brought great obstacles that seem

impossible for us to overcome. There was that instance that for hours of our stay inside

the classroom for a lecture will be equivalent to days of preparation and application in the

field to generate the exact data needed. Of course, monetary aspect was always eminent

and surely of great need but thanks to our very supportive family who was always there

to the rescue.

Physical and emotional stress were never absent as we have gone along the study.

During class days, there were lots of discussions, group activities, reports and quizzes

being done that consumed most of our time and drained our energy thereby setting the

research aside. And it does not end there, after returning home from school, we tend to

prioritize helping our family in their work until we will not notice that the darkness and

the night fell to its deepest recesses and there was no more time left for us to touch the

school works due to being already exhausted. The unending hectic schedule both at home

and in school, the discouragements and anxiety had somewhat held us from moving

forward and it came to our mind once that retreat was our only option left. But we were

not stuck in the dark part of the journey for the light shone brightly to us. We completely

surrendered everything and ourselves to God that He alone can conquer our gigantic

burden. And He absolutely never failed us when answers to our prayer came as blessings

in disguise. We started to appreciate that we’ve been blessed with our ever- loving and

ever- supportive family, group of friends, classmates, mentors, and brothers and sisters in

the faith that surround us who undoubtedly poured their utmost encouragements.
23
We were also given wisdom that this research which we thought as a monster

hovering over us trying to debilitate and swallow us up will also become a blessing that

taught us to find the strength, the confidence, and the potential hidden within us. It made

us to be appreciative, patient, humble, and avid listeners of advices. We’ve been renewed

for this study helped us find the best person we shall ever be.

This was totally a proof that all things work together for good to those that love God

and we therefore truly believe that with Him, nothing shall be impossible.
