LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
 M8AL-Ic-1: illustrates rational algebraic expressions;
 M8AL-Ic-2: simplifies rational algebraic expressions;
 M8AL-Ic-d-1: performs operations on rational algebraic expressions and;
 M8AL-Id-2: solves problems involving rational algebraic expressions.
OBJECTIVES:
 Sharing ideas with others and;
 Remind the learners about the advantages of practicing sportsmanship whenever group games are being done.

EXPLORE
Day 1
Checking of their Monthly Exam Test Paper in Mathematics. Afterwards, do the discussion of the next topic.
To hook students interest asks if there is a member of the class who is celebrating his or her birthday. Sing a
birthday song for those who are celebrating their birthday this month, then ask: “Do you know what day of
the week you were born?” Tell the class that the expressions below will help them determine that day, if their

parents failed to tell them t*= d+2m+ +y+ - + +2 by Art Johnson, 1999. Introduce and
discuss Simplifying Rational Algebraic Expressions.

FIRM UP
Day 2
Form 3 groups. Provide each group with one of the tables made for them to fill up. Let them complete the
table by giving the missing dimension or area for the rectangle. Assume that each expression is defined and
not equal to zero. Let them explain how each answer was obtained, interpret geometrically one of the given
items, apply the concepts and skills to time-rate-distance situation by forming a table similar to the given
tables, enumerate possible perspectives of the best procedures for simplifying final answers, show empathy
on students’ difficulties by suggesting how to correct common mistakes in performing operations with
rational algebraic expressions, and manifest self-knowledge by citing previous misconceptions in working
with algebraic expressions. And so to firm up learned concepts and skills involving rational algebraic
expressions, ask the class to complete the table given by letting them work it by pair.
DEEPEN
Day 3
Deepen their understanding of the concepts and skills in working rational algebraic expressions by asking
volunteers to explain Examples 1-8. The lesson cannot be carried out next session due to school activity so, to
hook and hold student’s interest and so to transfer the learning, provide a game activity. Ask them to spread
their chairs to the side and get ½ lengthwise. The goal of the game is to write their answer on the paper they
have. At the “GO” signal, the students start to answer the given question in an oral way. When the teacher
says “STOP” the students will stop answering and form their lines at the center and let their teacher check
their answer. The procedure will be repeated 20 times for there are 20 questions given. The score of the
student will be asked and recorded.

TRANSFER
Day 4
The students are celebrating their Acquaintance Party.
