towels, then pour the oil out of the wok or skillet.
Put the pan back over the heat, dump the meat back into it and simmer for one minute.
Add the sauce, cook for one minute while stirring, then add all the green onions.
Cook for one more minute, then remove the beef and onions with tongs or a slotted
spoon to a serving plate.

Alex Carey's World Cup concern as wicketkeeping
Alex Carey is on shaky
ground.
He lost his spot to self-
confessed part-time
wicketkeeper Peter
Handscomb in the T20
format, while lack of runs in
the 50 over game has left the
door ajar for a late swoop less
than four months out from
the World Cup.
Handscomb's elevation is a warning shot
across the bows for Carey, just as Adam
Gilchrist taking over from Ian Healy before
the 1999 World Cup was a precursor for
Healy's Test retirement. Carey should
consider his recent omission as just a
warning, not a death knell.
But in analysing the worth of both players
to Australia's ODI side, it's critical to
understand the career pattern for most
glovemen.
Nowadays, most get recognised because
of the runs they make. Once selected, they
are difficult to displace thanks to their role
as the wicketkeeper.
A little more than eight years ago, the only
way Victorian coach Greg Shipperd could
justify Handscomb a consistent spot in the
XI was to ask him to take up wicketkeeping
again. In 2010-11 - the season before - he
literally threw his keeping pads away.
For 18 months, he was as much a keeper
as he was a Nobel Prize winner.
Following Shipperd's request, he needed
those pads back and has flirted with the
craft when required ever since.
Victoria's batting line-up was all-
conquering and overflowing with talent. It
included David Hussey, Chris Rogers and
Cameron White in their prime, while Bob
Quiney and Andrew McDonald were
proven performers. Glenn Maxwell was
also making a name for himself.
Handscomb simply had to keep or he
wouldn't get a game.
Once established, his batting then justified
a spot on merit so keeping was no longer
necessary on a full-time basis.
Brad Haddin and even the great Gilchrist
were technically never dropped despite
enduring lean spells with the bat at various
stages of their Test careers. Their keeping
was a selection sanctuary and their role
behind the stumps afforded both valuable
time to find form in front of them, which
they invariably did.
Following his international T20 debut
against India, Handscomb was not
selected for his supple hands or quick feet.
He was picked on the back of runs in the
shorter formats of the game, especially in
December during the BBL and earlier

during the JLT series. But as was his
career path as an early 20s Shield
prospect, he will now hold his place thanks
to his role with the gloves.
The selection highlighted a variety of
components which should concern Carey,
who remains the keeping frontrunner for
the World Cup.
First, it is now evident the selectors are
confident enough in Handscomb's hands
to trust him at the top level in conditions
widely considered more arduous for
keepers than anywhere else on the planet.
You may have forgotten that Handscomb
has fulfilled the role for Australia in ODI
cricket before, albeit in an away series
against New Zealand only memorable for
Marcus Stoinis' batting heroics. Alongside
assistant coach Haddin, Handscomb has
developed a routine and formula where he
can rapidly upskill himself following
periods of playing as a specialist batsman.
Second, the selectors must feel the added
responsibility will not jeopardise
Handscomb's batting credentials in T20s.
Now the coveted ODI role is just one step
away, not two.
The player himself has always considered
batting his foremost skill, but
accompanied by an vital asterisk declaring
he will a) always do what's best for the
team and b) always do what's better to
stay in the team.
F i n a l l y a n d w o r r y i n g l y f o r C a r e y,
Handscomb's selection is evidence the
selectors were not entirely happy with the
left-hander's summer.
Although Carey was solid in the Big Bash -
peeling off three half centuries in 12
knocks at an average of 27 - his failed to
grasp his opportunity for Australia in the
one-day arena.
When he was promoted to open in
January, Carey managed just 47 runs in
three knocks against India. From an
admittedly small sample size, the opening
partnership with Aaron Finch was a
dysfunctional marriage and is unlikely to
be seen again.
With David Warner appearing almost
certain to return and D'Arcy Short circling,
Carey's World Cup batting position - if
selected - will almost certainly be between
No.6 and No.8.
As a middle-order batsman, his previous
six innings for Australia in 50-over cricket
saw him pass 20 five times but never
reach 50. It was enough to suggest he
deserved more chances, but no World
Cup silver bullet.
Speaking on Macquarie Sports Radio this
week, Michael Hussey politely criticised
(as per his affable way) the selectors for
promoting Handscomb ahead of Carey.
“They obviously rate Peter Handscomb's
batting more than Alex Carey's at the
moment, and I think particularly against

spin, although I think Carey is a good
player of spin himself,” Hussey began.
“But playing in the subcontinent I think
they're backing Peter Handscomb to make
more runs with the bat in those middle
overs playing spin.
“I personally, I like to have the best
wicketkeeper doing the job first and
foremost, and I think Carey is probably a
better gloveman at this stage.
“It's an interesting one and I'm not 100 per
cent sure I agree with it.”
In other words, Hussey disagrees with
Langer's call and he would have some
friends, especially among a typically vocal
keepers union (or keepers mafia,
depending on perspective) which believes
glovework is an art too often neglected in
blind pursuit of runs.
As for Handscomb himself, he trusts
himself to “keep and all that,” which is a
phrase which makes him sound like more
of a part-timer than he probably is.
“I can keep and all that, I just need to make
sure I'm fit enough and strong enough,” he
said.
“That if we keep first in a 50-over game, I
can still go out there and bat at four or five
and make sure I'm still running hard
between the wickets.
“In India with a bit of heat and up to the
stumps a lot more on spinning wickets, it
can be tough, but it's something I am
looking forward to having a crack at.”
Whatever transpires in the second T20,
Carey's position as glovemen for the initial
few upcoming one-dayers against India is
all but locked in.
But if his batting drops away, the selectors
need to ask themselves the following
question: “Do the runs Handscomb could
make as opposed to Carey offset the runs
we will lose via a dropped catch or missed
stumping?”
The answer now appears to be a yes in
T20s. And with 10 ODIs scheduled
between now and Australia's opening
World Cup clash against Afghanistan,
there is still time for the selectors to
harness their inner Greg Shipperd and
make the same bold call he did eight
summers
ago. The onus is on Carey to dismiss the
possibility when he gets a chance to do so
and ward off Handscomb's challenge.
And sitting at a quaint Salamanca cafe in
Hobart, it's worth considering what
Matthew Wade would be thinking right
now?
He belted the second-most runs in the BBL
(592 runs at 42.28), and has been the best
batsman in the Sheffield Shield this
season, but seemingly can't get near the
national side again.
But that's another story that may be best
saved for the Tasmanian's post-career
autobiography.

in his contract.

That might seem harsh on a player
that ruptured his ACL in Round 1
last year and was sidelined for the
rest of the season.
But the fact Liberatore remained
unsigned until late October raised
ample eyebrows among those in
the industry.
The good news for Dogs fans is
Liberatore is aiming to run out for
the Dogs in Round 1 after a
smooth recovery from the serious
knee injury.
While Liberatore played a key role
in the Bulldogs' drought-breaking
premiership in 2016, he hasn't
been able to reach the same
heights of his 2014 career-best
season.
Uncontracted beyond 2019, the
Dogs need a big year out of the
midfielder.
Jack Watts (Port Adelaide)
Like Liberatore, Watts is also
fighting for his career, according to
Lloyd.
The recent off-season was one

He was at the centre of a leaked
texting scandal in October before
video surfaced of the 2008 No. 1

Munich festival Oktoberfest.
It all came after Watts' subpar first
season with the Power, where he

McGovern was one of the biggest
names to move clubs during the
off-season after leaving the Crows
with two years still remaining on
his deal.
When Adelaide was at its best,
Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins and
Eddie Betts were often manned up
by the opposition's best defenders,
meaning McGovern had a great
chance to get off the chain and
have an impact.
But he won't have that same luxury
at Carlton — something Lloyd is
wary of ahead if the 2019 season.
“You're no longer playing on
defender No. 4,” he said.
“You are coming on the big bucks
and we'll see just how good you
are on the MCG and Marvel
Stadium in Melbourne on some
good defenders.”
Gary Ablett (Geelong)
When Ablett returned to the Cats
chatter he'd better suit the club as
a forward, the superstar declared
he wanted to play in the midfield.
Twelve months on and something
has changed.
Either Ablett has warmed to the
idea of spending more time inside
forward 50, or the coaching staff
have put their foot down.
Either way, the prospect of Ablett
occupying the goalsquare is an
exciting one for Geelong fans. As
he flagged earlier this month: “It
might be I am only getting half the
possessions that I am used to
getting, but I'm damaging with
those possessions.”
But Lloyd's concern over Ablett
isn't necessarily what he'll do with
ball in hand.
“Can he adapt for his team playing
forward? Can he lay tackles?”
Lloyd asked.
“It would be an unbelievable effort
if he kicked 40 goals. But is he
going to lay tackles or is he going
to have shoulder issues?”
Joe Daniher (Essendon)
He's arguably the Bombers' most
important player, so whether
Daniher can return to his best form

once fit will be crucial to the team's
success in 2019.
Daniher played just seven games
last season after being restricted
by osteitis pubis.
It was a frustrating setback for
Essendon and Daniher, who
produced a breakthrough 2017
campaign where he played all 23
games and kicked 65 goals.
But coming off a debilitating injury
setback, Lloyd has questioned
whether Daniher can have the
same impact.
“How does he fit in to this
Essendon team? Can he get back
to the player he was?” Lloyd
asked.
The Bombers are hopeful Daniher,
who's been on a modified training
program for most of the off-
season, can have some game time

Jordan De Goey (Collingwood)
“This will surprise people,” Lloyd
quipped when he announced the
Collingwood star had made his list.
After all, De Goey was one of the
revelations of the AFL season,
booting a team-high 48 goals as
the Pies surged to an unlikely
Grand Final appearance.
But the 22-year-old's pre-season
has been far from ideal, beginning
training on a modified program due
to a foot injury before missing the
final few sessions of 2018 due to
gastro amid reports of a hamstring
setback.
Then De Goey a fortnight ago had
a scare at training, suffering a
minor foot sprain that forced him
into a moon boot and put his
Round 1 availability in doubt.
Lloyd said he understood the
Magpies hadn't been too pleased
with De Goey's conditioning over
the off-season — hence why he
made the list.
“You know why I've put Jordan in?
(He's) come back unfit, did a
hamstring and now has done an
ankle,” Lloyd said.
“The club, I don't think, has been
too happy with him and how he
came back, so it's a 'watch this

Daniel Rich (Brisbane Lions)
At his best, Rich is one of the most
dynamic defenders in the
competition. But the difference
between his best and worst is
arguably too stark for a player of
his talent and experience.
That was evident throughout 2018.
After picking up an ankle injury in
Round 1, Rich returned in stunning
style with 28 disposals against the
Giants in Round 6.
But Lions fans would've been
frustrated by the inconsistent
output over his remaining 17
games, racking up 24-plus
disposals six times but 16 or less
touches another six times.
Lloyd said Rich needed to find a
way to overcome opposition

last year and not in the top 10 of the
best and fairest,” Lloyd said.
“He's better than that, but he gets
tagged too easy.
“He needs a big year.”

“Tex, how good is he? Is he a good
player or is he a great player? At
the moment, I'd say he's just a
solid player.”

HEART AT LAST
It's been the big criticism of the Reds
over the last five years — they don't
play with enough heart in defence
and can't go the journey.
There was a soft underbelly in the
Reds' squad.
Well, that was put to rest by the Reds
in their first hit out of the year against
the Highlanders, as Brad Thorn's
men delivered a rousing
performance to give Queensland
supporters hope that they've turned
the corner.
Yes, the Reds lost 36-31 after
conceding a try in the 74th minute
and then failing to execute in attack
from a promising position with a
minute to go.
But the scrambling defence the
Reds showed in the moments before
Dillon Hunt scored the Highlanders'
matchwinning try showed this
season wouldn't be the same as
years gone by.
After another poor kick from the
Reds (Queensland's biggest work
on ahead of their showdown with the
champion Crusaders on Saturday),
the Highlanders had their Australian
opponents on the back foot and
scrambling.
The Highlanders went from left to
right where Matt Faddes turned
Duncan Paia'aua inside out, broke
away, passed back in field to Ben
Smith, where the All Blacks fullback
found halfback Kayne Hammingotn
seven metres out.
Hammington appeared certain to
score, but Reds hooker Alex Mafi, of
all people, made one last effort to
pull him down and did so, just
centimetres short of the try line.
It was the type of effort that can save
a game.
The type of effort that we've seen
New Zealand rugby sides show for
years.
In the end, it mattered little, as the
Highlanders scored three phases
later as they sent the ball wide and
found a two-man overlap.
But it showed the character and
attitude developing at the Reds
under Thorn, one of rugby's toughest
players during a two-decade career
as a dual international.

Rugby competition this year remains
to be seen, but the initial signs are
positive that they'll at least be
competitive.
BRUMBIES' WIN A RETURN TO
GLORY DAYS
One hot day doesn't make a
summer, but the Brumbies delivered
one of the best performances in
Australian rugby in many years on
Saturday.
Former Wallabies back-rower and
club captain Stephen Hoiles
described the win as the club's finest
in a decade.
It's hard to argue with his
assessment.
The Brumbies did a Brodie Retallick

They took the game to the Chiefs
and didn't simply try to protect their
lead.
It helps when the passes stick, but
the Brumbies forwards must take a
lot of credit for laying the platform
and providing quick ball for halves

achieved without David Pocock and
after the Chiefs were bolstered by
the return of Damian McKenzie.
After an underwhelming 34-27 loss

perfect response and will give them

new all-encompassing style of play
that began to develop in 2018.
TAHS TO STILL BE A THREAT
The Waratahs were poor, very poor,
but let's take stock of their
performance for a moment before
ruling a line through their season.
NSW won't be the only team that
struggles in Tokyo in 2019.
Last year the Sunwolves improved
dramatically, pulling off three wins
and giving a fright to others,
including the Crusaders who led just
14-13 after 56 minutes at home
before pulling away.
But what is concerning is that the
Wa r a t a h s ' i s s u e s s e e m e d t o
replicate the Wallabies' in 2018.
They were found out for going too
wide, too early.
While the Waratahs had said they
wouldn't be sucked into turning the
contest into an open game of touch
rugby, they were clearly keen to give

their backs more room to use the ball
after limited opportunities in their
narrow loss to the Hurricanes a week
earlier.
What's concerning is that the
Waratahs' playmaking spine is
similar to the Wallabies', and the
front-row struggles were a worry too.
A lack of depth and power in the tight
five was the Waratahs' major issue in
2018 and once again their shortage
of dominant forwards is coming back
to bite them.
They were beaten at the scrum for
the second straight week.
Tolu Latu's stupidity late in the
match, which has seen him whacked
with a six-week ban, won't help them
either.
But let's remember that the
Waratahs still have oodles of class in
the backline and a back-row as good
as most in the competition and will
still be competitive in 2019.
DID SOMEBODY SAY THREE-
PEAT?
The competition might only be two
weeks old, but already the back to
back champion Crusaders have to
be considered favourites to secure a
rare three-peat.
They may have been slow out of the
blocks against the Blues a week
earlier, but the Crusaders were
frighteningly good against domestic
rivals the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes managed to score
twice at the death to add some
respectability to the scoreboard, but
the 2016 champions were smashed.
Making the 38-22 win all the more
impressive is that it was done with
Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock and
Codie Taylor still resting on the
sidelines.
The Hurricanes may have been
missing Beauden Barrett and had TJ
Perenara and Ngani Laumpae
coming off the bench, but the gap
between the Crusaders and the rest
of the competition is stark.
Scott Robertson's Crusaders have
now won 17 games straight.
Next up is the Reds in Brisbane on
Saturday.
The match promises to be a litmus
test for Thorn's baby Reds, who
boast the youngest squad in the
competition.

Golf A California business man, while in Japan
for some business meetings and a few rounds of
golf, arrived in Tokyo a day earlier than expected.
