is targeted for completion in
2021.
Commenting on the project,
Bali Governor Wayan Koster
said: "The presence of this dam
is a real effort to meet water
needs both in terms of quantity
and quality, especially for the
people of the Sarbagita Area -
Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar,
and Tabanan." The Governor's
comments were made while
attending the inauguration of
the Sidan Dam Project, in the
Village Belok Sidan, on
Thursday. April 4, 2019.
The Governor reminded all in
attendance that water is a basic
need for households,
industries, and tourism in Bali.

The Sidan Dam occupies the

The Governor assured that with
the completion of the Sidan
Dam Project, Bali will no longer
be experiencing a water deficit
with sufficient raw water supply

be used to drive micro
hydro-power plants.
The construction of the
Sidan Dam will cost Rp.
829 billion sourced

Budget in coordination with the
Directorate General of Water
Resources and the Bali Penida
River Regional Office.
Planners say the dam will be
able to generate 0.65
megawatts of electrical power
The dam is also said to have a
potential of electricity

Philharmonic and Singapore's Arts
Incubator and social enterprise,
Project Artitude, will come together in
a 5-day program of Chamber Music
from Johann Sebastian Bach and
others set in the paradise island of
Bali. In what promises to be a
convergence of musical excellence
and culture, Western Classical music
and traditional Balinese musical forms
musicals will experience a meeting of
the minds that integrates spirit, man,
and nature in a harmonious way –
known locally as Tri Hita Karana – the
delicate balance of Nature, Man, and
Spirituality.
During 5 days in May, Bach in Bali
brings musical master classes,
seminars, and two exciting concerts -
Bachanalia and Bach and the Boys.
The first public concert on Sunday,
May 4th will present the western
classical world's most famous “B-
Listers” – Bach, Beethoven and
Brahms. This includes the epic and
heavenly Goldberg Variations by
Bach to the playful Serenade Trio by
Beethoven, followed by the youthful
and the passionate Piano Quartet by

Nicole Jeong, born in Korea and now

Violinist Nicole Jeong has appeared in
performances throughout Europe,
Asia, and North America. Dr. Jeong's
versatility in solo, orchestral, and
chamber music has taken her to
internationally recognized venues
such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher
Hall, Alice Tully Hall, KKL Luzern,
Tokyo City Opera Concert Hall,
National Centre for the Performing
Arts in Beijing, Shanghai Centre

with a number of orchestras. She also
won the Ackerman Music Prize
awarded by world-renowned
Emerson String Quartet. She is a
former member of the New Juilliard
Ensemble, and of the Lucerne
Festival Academy where she worked
with the late Pierre Boulez and
Ensemble InterContemporain.
Dr. Jeong earned master's degree
from The Juilliard School where she
was the recipient of the Juilliard
Alumni Scholarship and served as a
Te a c h i n g A s s i s t a n t a n d l a t e r
Substitute Teacher in the Violin
Department as well as a Mentor of
their Mentoring Program. She has
completed her doctorate at SUNY
Stony Brook as a full-scholarship
student, under the tutelage of Philip
Setzer from Emerson String Quartet.
Her chamber coaches have included
members of Emerson, Takacs,
Cleveland, Orion String Quartet,
David Finckel, Wu Han, Ida Kavafian,
Laurence Lesser, Jorja Fleezanis,
Colin Carr, Gil Kalish, Julian Martin,
Jerome Lowenthal, and Zvi Zeitlin.
She recently moved to Jakarta with
her husband after living in New York
for 11 years and has served as a
Visiting Artist for the Juilliard.

Wayan Sudirana – Gamelan
Wayan Sudirana was born in Ubud,
Bali. Sudirana is one of Bali's most well-
known composers, teaching and
performing across Bali and
internationally. He is a leading
professor at the Indonesia Institute for
the arts (ISI) in Denpasar. After
graduating from ISI, he studied at the
University of British Columbia (UBC)
where he received his MA and Ph.D in
E t h n o m u s i c o l o g y. H e w a s
commissioned by the Canadian
government to compose a piece
combining Balinese gamelan, Taiko
Japan and Bagpipes to be performed at
the 2010 Winter Olympics in
Vancouver, Canada. He collaborated
with worldwide companies, such as
Jack Morton Production New York for
the Hundred Percent Club (HPC) of
IBM in May 2017 and May 2018; and
Five Current Company for the opening
ceremony of Asian Games held in
Jakarta August 2018. He has also
collaborated with many famous
composers Michael Tenzer (2003 -
2013), Andrew Clay McGraw (2006 -
2010), Peter Michael Steele and
Joseph Sandino (2007), Gamelan X,
and performed at Carnegie Hall, New
York. He has just published a book
about the future of the Balinese sacred

How Mosquitoes Find You with Your Sweat
Exactly how do
mosquitoes zero in on
humans to feed on?
Scientists have figured
out the guilty olfactory
receptor and are working
on a way to create a life-
saving "perfume" that can
protect people from
mosquito bites.
Mosquito Bites
When looking for a bloody
meal, mosquitoes first sense
the carbon dioxide a human
exhales even from a distance of over
30 feet. Following this trail, the
mosquito soon senses the human
scent and, not long after, detects the
human's body heat. Once they land,
they can taste the human skin with
their legs and find a place to bite.
For years, it has been known that it is
the lactic acid and other acidic
volatiles in human sweat that attracts
mosquitoes. For four decades,
researchers have been trying to find
out exactly how mosquitoes zone in
on these scents, and now, using
genetics, researchers have found the

olfactory receptor that is responsible

Biologist Matthew DeGennaro and his
research team experimented with
different mutant mosquitoes, and
found that it is the absence of IR8a
that made the mutant mosquitoes
struggle to detect lactic acid and the
other acidic components of human
odor. While they are still able to detect
carbon dioxide and heat, the missing
IR8a made over half of the mutant
mosquitoes uninterested in eating.
In the first test, Ph.D. student Joshua
Raji experimented with his own arm.

When he exposed his arm to
wild mosquitoes, his scent
was quite popular. But in four
minutes of exposure to the
mutant mosquitoes, not one
took an interest in his arm.
When they conducted the
same test on 14 participants,
the results were the same in
that the genetically altered
mosquitoes were
significantly less likely to fly
close to human skin.
Protective 'Perfume'
There are many possible
ways to use this information to prevent
mosquito bites and thereby reduce
th e b u r d e n o f m o s q u i to - b o r n e
diseases. One of these ways is by
using odors that mask the IR8a
pathways. By adding such odors to
r e p e l l e n t s s u c h a s D E E T, t h e
repellents' effectiveness may be
increased.
So far, the team is working on
chemical screens that disrupt the
IR8a pathways, with the ultimate goal
of making a “perfume” that masks
people's odors to mosquitoes, thereby
protecting them from mosquito bites.

of 2019, a total of 893,245
foreign tourists visited Bali, an
increase of 10.21% over the
same two-month period the
year before.
Mainland Chinese visitors have
moved back into the pole
position as the leading source
of foreign visitors to Bali. For the
first two months of 2019,
Chinese visitors tallied 238,124
travelers – a year-on-year
