our jobs forever. But economists,
despite their reputation as
“
practitioners of the “dismal science”,
have always been upbeat about
that. Sure, machines destroy jobs,
they say. But hey, the new industries
that new technology enables create
even more new jobs. Granted, there
may be a bit of “disruption” between
destruction and creation, but that's
just capitalist business as usual.
Besides, it's progress, innit?
We have now lived through what
one might call Automation 1.0. The
paradigmatic example is car
manufacturing. Henry Ford's
p r o d u c t i o n l i n e
metamorphosed into Toyota's
“lean machine” and thence to
the point where few humans, if
any, are visible on an assembly
line. Once upon a time, the car
industry employed hundreds
of thousands of people. We
called them blue-collar
workers. Now it employs far
fewer. The robots did indeed
take their jobs. In some cases, those
made redundant found other
employment, but many didn't. And
sometimes their communities were
devastated as a result. But GDP
went up, nevertheless, so
economists were happy.
Now we're embarking on
Automation 2.0. This is largely
driven by technologies employing
machine learning (ML) and big data,
what we misleadingly call “artificial
intelligence”. The types of job it
targets are different from those
addressed by Automation 1.0: they
have some cognitive content but
also a lot of routine. We call them
white-collar jobs. And the new
machines can often do them
adequately or well.

beginning to be more agitated about

alarmist. For example, in 2013 Carl
Frey and Mike Osborne in Oxford
predicted that nearly half of the 700+
job categories used by the US
Bureau of Labor were vulnerable. In
their book The Future of the
Professions, Richard and Daniel
Susskind foresaw a radical impact
on professional experts such as
accountants, lawyers and
management consultants. The word
got out that maybe a lot of high-
status employment might be
vulnerable to automation and
people began to fret about the
hollowing-out of the middle class.
After all, there isn't a functioning
democracy without one. (Strangely,
the same liberal democracy has
apparently been able to survive the
unemployment of millions of blue-
collar workers. But we will let that
pass.)
Last week, Oxford Economics, a
high-end consultancy, unveiled the
findings of its latest peek into the
future in a report entitled How
Robots Change the World. Like
most of these inquiries, it foresees a
“great displacement” of employment
by Automation 2.0. But this
displacement, the report says, will
not be evenly distributed around the
world or within countries.
“Our research shows,” it says, “that
the negative effects of robotisation
are disproportionately felt in the
lower-income regions of the globe's
major economies – on average, a
new robot displaces nearly twice as
many jobs in lower-income regions
compared with higher-income
regions of the same country. At a

inequality and political polarization,
this finding has important social and
political implications.”
The report makes for pretty sobering
reading. It claims that, on average,
each additional robot wipes out 1.6
jobs. In lower-income regions of the
world, each machine displaces 2.2
jobs, but only 1.3 in higher-income
areas. The researchers compiled a
“vulnerability score” for different
regions in five countries the UK,
USA, France, Germany and Japan.
The resulting maps confirm that
employment in poorer areas will be
hit harder by automation. “The
regional inequalities that exist within
countries,” it concludes, “such as
England's north-south divide,
could be exacerbated by the
rise of the robots.” The report
notes that this trend “has
important implications for
policy design in advanced
economies pursuing
international competitiveness
through automation”.
You bet it has. One of the
things we are learning about
digital technology is that in
almost every area of its
deployment it has become an
amplifier of inequality. The tech
companies that control it employ
almost no one in comparison either
to their profits or to non-tech
companies of comparable size and
scale. Volkswagen, for example,
employs nearly 656,000 people
worldwide. As of December 2018,
Facebook employed only 35,587.
Likewise, tech companies pay
derisory amounts in tax in the
territories where they make colossal
profits. In 2018, for example,
Amazon paid nothing in US federal
income tax on more than $11bn in
profits before taxes. It also received
a $129m tax rebate from the federal
government. Automation 2.0 is likely
to be very profitable for the
companies that deploy it, but it'll be
governments that will be left to pick
up the pieces. Some progress.

Experts are predicting that by
2025 Bali will run out of fresh
water because of widespread
saltwater intrusion into the
water table.
As reported by Balipost.com,
the Island's tourism industry is
being seen as the main culprit
for this water shortage due to its
unbridled demand for fresh
water.
Each day, some 3 million liters
of water or about 60% of total
fresh water consumption in Bali, is
used by the tourism industry. This
compares with the relatively
modest 100,000 liters of water
used daily by domestic
households in Bali.

Stop Asking for Beer in 'Frosty' Glasses
Though it's
tempting to
ask for your
beer to be
poured into a
frosty glass or
mug to act like
its own mini-
freezer, don't
do it.
This is definitely
something that's
h a p p e n i n g ,
because there's a
b a r i n m y
neighborhood that has a huge sign
up that says “No Frosty Glasses”
on it. While the idea of banning
frozen glasses might seem like a
stunt by a hipster bar, there's
actually a lot of good reasons to
not drink your beer out of a frozen
glass.
Let me preface this by saying that if
frozen glasses are your thing,
have at it. There's definitely
something to be said for going
outside with a cold glass of beer on
a warm day (your beer stays colder
longer). But, if you're in a
temperature-controlled bar where
you're not at risk of ending up with
a sun-cooked beer, that frozen
glass is doing you more harm than
good.
It's a flavor killer
The biggest reason to ditch frozen
glasses, in my opinion, is that cold
temperatures kill the flavors in
beers. And Greg Engert of
Bluejacket Brewery agrees, telling
Vine Pair that frosty mugs are the
enemy of flavorful beers: “Served
too cold, the volatile aromatics [of
craft beer] are held at bay.”

Having said that, if you're drinking
a cheaper beer that you might not
be that excited about, a frozen
glass is probably a good idea. As
Engert says, these “macro beers”
are usually meant to be more cold
and refreshing than flavorful, so
the cold receptacle works.
Mugs aside, the ideal serving
temperature for most beers is
between 40° – 50° F. When you go
colder than that you start to
change the flavor. Don't believe
me? Try a side-by-side of a beer in
a frozen glass and one in a room
temperature one. You're going to
get a lot more out of that slightly
chilled beer than you are out of the
ice cold one.
Presumably, you spent $5 on that
nicer beer because you wanted to
taste it. Don't ruin it by putting it in a
crazy cold glass and killing the
nuanced flavors of it.
It can make it taste weird
Since your glass was presumably
cleaned right before it was put in
the freezer, there's a good chance
some of that “frost” on the side of
your glass is actually sanitizer
used to clean it. That's not

this year's victory, a record sixth at the
British GP, will certainly live long in the
memory for Lewis Hamilton - who has
gathered the skills and experience since
that first win over a decade ago to master
the iconic Silverstone circuit.
Hamilton rued his qualifying mistake on
Saturday but he still only finished 0.006s
behind Valtteri Bottas, less than
half a metre across a 3.6-mile

season, but that doesn't tell the story of
another fantastic weekend for the
Dutchman. Verstappen qualified within

time Red Bull have done so all year, while
he was then involved in an engrossing nip-
and-tuck battle with Leclerc. Both drivers
displayed sublime wheel-to-wheel skills,
but it was Verstappen who the Safety Car
benefited more and he looked to be on
target for second place when he hunted
down Vettel.

Carlos Sainz
Qualified 13th, Finished 6th
Fast and opportunistic, Carlos Sainz's
strong run on race days continued by
securing sixth place for the second time in
three races. Qualifying had proved a
disappointment, slipping out in Q2 fighting
instability at the rear of his McLaren, but an
attacking start and then a timely Safety
Car pit stop put him ahead of teammate
Norris, with the added bonus of hard tyres
which took him to the end. Keeping
Ricciardo's faster Renault behind in the
closing laps capped a fine result.

Daniel Ricciardo
Qualified 7th, Finished 7th
This was only Renault's second double
points finish of the season but the French
team, although still trailing McLaren, do
have one major positive for F1 2019: The
signing, and form, of Daniel Ricciardo.
Ricciardo is now 9-1 up on Nico
Hulkenberg in qualifying for the season as
he secured an impressive seventh.
Ricciardo lost out on the first lap to Lando
Norris in the race but, after initially
dropping back following the Safety Car,

pursuit of Sainz in the closing stages - just

Alfas just fell the wrong side of the Q2 cut
line, but got ahead on the first lap and a
pre-Safety Car switch to the hard tyres put
him in play for a controlled run to eighth.

Daniil Kvyat was the big mover on Sunday,
rising eight places in the race to secure
two valuable points for Toro Rosso. Kvyat
says he “extracted everything from the

key to the Russian's end result -
he hadn't come in for his first
stop before Lap 20.

The final lap of Nico
Hulkenberg's race, when he

his first home race: Starring in qualifying

another blow by the Safety Car and,
unable to get to the end on the mediums,
the young rookie had to stop again on Lap

dumping them on the wrong side
of a cricketing anomaly - which
came in the decisive
moment of a World Cup
final no less - in the first
place.

humans, chimps and an even

rhesus macaques, analyzing the
differences in their genomes to
reveal how DNA functions within
fat cells.
DNA is usually so tightly woven
around protein within cells that
only certain parts of the strand can
be activated. In chimps and
macaques, researchers found
around 780 DNA regions that, for
humans, have become
inaccessible. Within these regions
were genes designed to convert
white fat into brown.
“We've lost some of the ability to
shunt fat cells toward beige or
brown fat, and we're stuck down
the white fat pathway,” says
Swain-Lenz.
