COMMON CAUSES OF ABSENTEEISM IN GRADE

11 EARTH STUDENTS (S.Y. 2019-2020)

CHAPTER 1-THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

A. Introduction:
Absenteeism is one of the biggest problem that our school are facing now a days. I know that
there are lot of reasons why students commit absences on their classes and it is also one of our
reason why we conduct this research because we aim to discover the common causes of absences
of the students in school. Some of the students don't want to attend on their classes maybe
because of tardiness and lack of financial assistance, that they don't have enough money to buy
those things needed on their classes or subjects. Having money or a consecutive absences can
causes into students drop-out in school and it can also effects their performance in school
especially in learning and getting grades.
The grade 11 students in Laperian National High School are one of the sections with poorly
performing students because of absences. Those students who always commits absences on their
classes experienced some difficulties in performing well because they are not around on the class
during the discussion of the teachers.
According to Balfanz and Byrnes (2018) having poor attendance in school has a negative
impact on the learning environment within the school. Students miss school due to factors related
to a lack of percieved value or motivation for attending (e.g chang et al., 2018 Sheldon and
Epstein, 2014). However there are bariers consist of factors which prevent a student from
attending school and include health conditions, in consistant on unreliable transportation,
suspension, housing instability, and involvement with child welfare or the juvenile justice system
(eg. Chang at al., 2018; Hofferth et al. 2001; Kearney, 2008; Zhang, 2003).
The main objective of this study is to look for the solution of this problem which is the
absenteeism. We will determine how can we avoid this in order to understand the situation and
solve the problem. As a researcher, we aim to discover the common causes of absences of the
students in grade 11 and also to encourage many students that education is very important for our
future.

B. Statement of the Problem:

2

The purpose of this case study is to discover the common causes of absenteeism in grade 11
students at Laperian National High School year (2019-2020).
In this research we will know the reasons of the students why they are involved on
committing absences in school and how it affects their academic performance in school.
What are the common causes of students absenteeism?
What will we do in order to avoid absenteeism and encourage students to continue their study?
How did absenteeism affects the performance of the students in school?

C. Scope and Delimitation

The scope of his study is all about the common causes of absenteeism which affecting the
performance of the grade 11 students at Laperian Nation High School, school year (2019-2020).
This study focuses only to those students who are enrolled as grade 11 al Laperian National
High School and those other grade level, or sections at the school are not included on this study.

D. Significance of the Study

This study is very important because in this research, researchers lend to inform the parents
of those students who are always absent in the class. It also help the teachers to think plans and
strategies on how to give advice and help the students to avoid committing absencens.
It can also make the students to realized. That absenteeism can affect low performance in
learning. Which lead to lower economic opportunity in the future.

CHAPTER 2 - THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. Review of Related Literature
3

Absenteeism now adays are become a major problem in public or in schools. Continues
absences can lead into student's learnings and performance in school or worst it can lean
student's drop out. An existing ptoblem can be solve in different ways.
According to Chang et. al., (2018) by identifying and understanding the situation of the
students today absences in school because of personal reasons, so if the teachers of the school
can understand the reasons of why the students prevent on attending classes they can easily think
a plan that can help and motivate the students to attend school classes. We can help reducebor
prevent absenteeism among students by undertaking certain necessary steps not just by,
identifying the cause but also by engaging in a one-on-one discussion with the student in order to
identify the probable cause of his/her absenteeism.

C. Hypothesis
Absenteeism is become crucial problem in school that needs a necessary break. Students
absences can affect their grades and performance in school which lead into a failure future.
Absenteeism can also cause into students behavior which decrease their motivation on attending
school classes.
Their are lot of causes why students keep on committing absences in school but their are also
a resolution for this problem in order to avoid students absences. By motivating the students and
make them understand the real purpose of education in the future can maybe make them value
the essence of education.

CHAPTER TWO
A. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Bullying is a behavioral phenomenon that has attracted the attentions of educators and
policy maker in many parts of the world in recent years. For Fante (2005) bullying is a situation,
which is characterized by intentional verbal or physical abuse, made repitively, by one or more
students against one or more peers. The authors state that the phenomenon is a form of violence
quickly growing up in the world. It can cause students feel unworthy or weak by their studying.
Maybe it’s suffers a lot or having a low grade performance in school.
According to Nadine (2014) bullying impacts on student ability to academically succeed.
Nadine found out that bullied students feel or fear from coming to school, because they feel
unsafe: therefor they are unable to concentrate with reelect negatively on their academic success.
They found out that bullied students have lower academic achievements.
Juvonen (2011) stated that bullying experiences affects victim academic achievement in
both direct and indirect ways. So bullied students by his peers may become worried and afraid
being teased, therefor he may stop participating in class or may has a trouble in concentrating on
10

class work because of fear. They added that students who are often object to be bullied by their
peers during school period.

B. HYPHOTHESIS
Bullying is a distinctive pattern of harming and humiliating others, specifically those are
in some way smaller, weaker, younger or in any way more vulnerable than the bully. Bullying is
not garden- variety aggression; it is a deliberate and repeated attempt to cause harm to others of
less power. It’s a very durable behavioral style, largely because bullies get what they want at
least at first. Bullies are made, not born, and it happens at an early age, if the normal aggression
of z-year old isn’t handled with consistency.
Bullying is an individual or a group of people with more power, repeatedly and
intentionally cause hurt or harm to another person or group of people who feel helpless to
respond. Bullying can continue over time is often hidden from adults, and will probably continue
if no action is taken.
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a
real or perceived power imbalance.
