CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Importance of Work Immersion

A good education makes an individual develop personally, socially as

well as economically. Education helps us to do our daily life activities in best

possible ways. Education makes us dutiful. Education helps us to acquire new

skills and knowledge that will affect our development in life. (Vijay Kumar, 2016)

It gives us a knowledge of the world around us and change it into something

better. It helps us build opinions and have point of view on things in life.

Education makes us capable of interpreting things, among other things. It is not

just about the lessons in textbooks. It is about the lesson in life. (Doumbia,

2013) It is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.

(Nelson Mandela)

In 2011, the Department of Education (DepEd) administered a shift to a

fresh learning scheme – the K to 12 basic education program. Many of people

were resistant to the new education system. Despite this, the government is

keen in revolutionizing the Philippine education.

K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the Department

of Education that aims to enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more

competent citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and

employment. “K” stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers to the succeeding 12

years of basic education (6 years of elementary education, 4 years of junior

high school, and 2 years of senior high school).

2

Student will undergo a decongested 12-years program that gives

students sufficient time to master skills and absorb basic competencies not like

the congested ten-year program that student’s lacks mastery to basic

competencies. The new curriculum gives student chance to choose among the

three tracks (i.e. Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; Sports and Arts)

and undergo immersion.

Grade 12 Senior High School Students have started their work

immersion related to their selected academic track or their selected vocational

course. The immersion trains students and strengthen their skill or expertise for

their work in the future. It is part of the K-12 program, which prepares students

to work in companies

According to the Department of Education, this program is an 80-hour

hands-on encounter, which Senior High Students must experience to open

them to the genuine working environment setting and improve their abilities

learned in school. The Department of Labor and Employment said work this is

an integral part of the K to 12 Program in fully realizing its goal to produce job-

ready graduates equipped with industry-based skills. DOLE strongly affirms

that work immersion contributes to the full realization of the objectives of the K

to 12 Program.

Specifically, the students are able to: (i) gain relevant and practical

industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and workers; (ii)

appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught

in school; (iii) enhance their technical knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich their

skills in communications and human relations; and (v) develop good work

habits, attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. These prepare them to
3

meet the needs and challenges of employment or higher education after

graduation. (Department of Education, 2017)

We were assign to work at the Project Planning and Development Office.

With the help of our dearest supervisor, Engr. Gerry N. Delorino, my colleagues

and I gained practical skills and knowledge that will be helpful in our chosen

career. However, more than the conceptual knowledge, my experiences in our

workplace taught me important work ethics that will surely be helpful in

whatever career I will pursue in the future.

Work Immersion Program of Activities

On our first day in work immersion, our adviser gathered us all to orient

us and on what to do when we are already at our respective places and/or

offices to work on. After the orientation, we were set to report to our respective

offices and some of my classmates including me, chose Project Planning and

Development Office. Our supervisor in PPDO gave us a glimpse of what kind

of work to expect in the office. The office has their own janitor and even if they

have janitor, we are still helping to maintain the cleanliness of the office. Our

supervisor toured us to the different construction building especially in the

Academic Building and he discussed all about engineering stuff. Moreover, he

suggested various activities that we might do in our short period of stay in the

PPDO.

SIGNIFICANCE AND LEARNING OF WORK IMMERSION

Significant Learnings

I have decided to conduct my work immersion at the Project

Planning Development Office at the Hostel building. A place known for

designing, planning, managing and constructing building, the place will equip

me with mathematical knowledge and practical skills that will be helpful in my

future career as an engineer. I have not regretted my decision of choosing

PPDO as the place for my work immersion even though my expectations of

what I will gain in the place were not fully met.

The Project planning and Development Office have taken me to a tour

to an engineering world by exposing and showing me the tools and equipment

that were used in making and planning projects such as buildings. In addition,

not only the physical view of the building, but also the composition of it and its

proposed budget. Some of the projects that were shown to us were the detailed

engineering estimates which is the budget of a project is shown and the sketch

of the building, inside and out which is also serve for you to count different lights

and measure pipes. As an immersionist and having a dream of becoming an

engineer someday, this is a big opportunity given not only for me but to the

whole team. And having such experiences and actual works it is such a

privilege to me.

Aside from the knowledge that I have gained about planning and

managing building, I also learned about some tools and equipment that are
5

commonly used in constructing a building. Our supervisor sent us to the

academic building for us to know and be familiar not only with their names but

with their functions in a certain construction. Moreover, our supervisor allowed

us to observe how some of them, such as steel bar (its sizes) and steel plate,

are being used.

Moreover, we also made a floor plan layout of the Fisheries Department

of this university. It helps me to work on my imagination for we do not have any

measuring tools to use in measuring the area rather we are just estimating the

width and length of the whole building. We also count the number of light bulbs,

lighting panels, switches, aircon, etc. inside the building we are assigned to.

Skills and Knowledge Obtained

 Apply Academic Knowledge – STEM –The works that we have done

in the Project Planning and Development Office requires enough

knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Like

performing calculations, building layouts, physics and some likes.

 Communicate Effectively – My 80-hour work immersion allowed me to

hone and further improve my communication skills by constantly

communicating effectively with my co-work immersionist and my

supervisor. May it be in-group or individual task, communicating

effectively with other people in our workplace plays an important role in

finishing the task successfully.

6

 Demonstrate Customer Service Skills – Most of our work revolved

around performing calculations and layout such as making a layout of

one of the building in the UEP Fisheries Department, and voltage

percentage. Our supervisor did not directly point out any clientele that

we should serve. However, with all the works that we have done, we

have already rendered service to our supervisor, and the people inside

the office.

 Cooperate with others in a Team Setting – I was not the only one in

the office, there are also other work immersionists and most of them are

my classmates. Most of the time, we were given task like calculations,

requiring us to work effectively as one by helping other in the part where

they do not understand and struggling. We work in the office as if we

are family.

 Exhibit Regulatory and Ethical Responsibilities – The Project

Planning and Development Office exercise strict office policies that

everyone who is inside the office must follow. Moreover, being inside an

office we should respects every staff’s privacy by being silent and have

some manners. I took all the necessary measures to ensure that there

would be no anomaly or trouble inside the laboratory room because it is

my responsibility.

 Use Basic Engineering Technology – We did not use any engineering

technology during our work immersion. However, our supervisor

introduced some engineering tools and equipment such as blueprints

and many more.

7

 Organize Database, Files and Drawers – We did not organize any files

in the office for the fact that being in an office, almost of the documents,

files, and databases are very confidential and private for some. You

cannot access easily any folders and documents without any consent.

 Perform Calculations and Conversion – We perform many

calculations including measuring, counting and computing. From

measuring the estimated length of pipes and counting the number of light

panels, light bulbs etc. in the Completion of College of Law Building

(phase-2); computing the estimated budget for the repair of the UEP

Library building, computing the voltage percentage or power panels and

a lot more.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Problems Encountered

The first time you do a thing is always exciting. However, shyness,

nervousness, and many second thoughts comes right after. That is the feeling

of first time and exactly what I felt when I first stepped and enter the doors of

the Project Planning and Development Office. Many thought comes in my mind

of what will going to happen in the next days of my work immersion, but I know

that everything comes right in place, and co-immersionist and I will enjoy and

learned more and new knowledge and experiences inside the office.

We cannot deny that even the good one have problems encountered.

The first week in the Project Planning and Development Office, my co-

immersionist and I is having an adjustment in terms of time and the environment

itself. We make ourselves comfortable despite of the poor ventilation inside the

office.

Another thing is the range of our voices. How it amplified because of the

echo, even we are just whispering to each other, causing to distract some staffs

inside and the fact that the office is to small for our number.

In addition, punctuality is being observe in this work immersion but it is

one of our common problem in the whole work immersion. Being late and not

going to the office in time is no new to me and to my co-immersionist but we

lessen the everyday possibilities of being late by waking up early in the morning.
9

Overall, this work immersion is such a nice training to us. We gain

enough knowledge that will help us in the career we choose in the near future.

Moreover, we experience many things and gain pleasure from it in this whole

journey.

Recommendation

To the next work immersionist in the Project Planning and Development

Office they should have enough knowledge and background in the field of

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. They should also have

the patience and passion of what they are doing and have fun with it. They

should also strictly follow the rules and policies inside the working area.

Moreover, they should have the respect to their co-immersionist, supervisor and

the other people inside the working area and work as one. In addition,

participate, cooperate and put time and effort in the entire task given by group

0r individually.

Lastly, to the Project Planning and Development Office, they should at

least improve the air ventilation inside the office so that the work immersionist

or the people inside will be more comfortable and relax. They should not

hesitate in giving works to some of the work immersionist because the main

goal here is to learn, utilize skills and gain knowledge from it.
