DESIGN OF WATER TANK

TANK SIZE 2.9 m x 2.2 m x 2.05 m (Total depth)

Depth of tank 2.05 m
Grade of Concrete M 25
Grade of steel Fe 500
3
Unit weight of soil s= 20.8 kN/m (NO SOIL OUTSIDE)
3
Unit weight of water w= 7 kN/m
3
Submerged weight of soil w' =s - w = 13.8 kN/m
Angle of repose = 30 deg ka = 0.333

The walls can be assumed to act as individual panels fixed at the base and both sides
The walls have to be designed for the following cases
1 Submerged earth pressure + water pressure acting outside and no liquid inside (i.e. tank empty)
2 Liquid pressure acting from inside and no earth outside

CASE 1 Submerged Earth pressure acting outside and no liquid inside (i.e. tank empty)

Unsupported length of wall = b= 2.9 m

Depth of the tank below Ground a= 2.05 m

For the purpose of design ground water table is considered at the ground level itself
and hence the soil is in submerged condition

Calculation of equivalent unit weight of soil = we
