Compost Pit

Day 4

The problem of garbage disposal is prevalent in the school due to lack of external
outlet for the decomposition of the acquired garbage in the said institution. To answer
this problem, parents and teachers cooperate to make a compost pit, this is to answer
the decomposition of the biodegradable materials in the school, more specifically in
grades 1 and 2.
The formulation of the said intervention started on the assessment of the
school’s waste disposal system. As the teachers assess the community’s outlet for waste
disposal, they observe that it was hard for the community to collect the garbage of
barangay sta. Cruz due to the hard road that they have. Furthermore, there was also no
waste disposal manifested in the community. These complications lead the school to
create its own waste disposal system in order to promote a clean environment for the
learners.
The thought of creating a compost pit was decided after assessing other possible
options for waste disposal. Throwing away the garbage way from the school vicinity is
damaging for the community. Also, creating a garbage bin can also create more harm in
terms of health risk for the learners and financially speaking, the school cant afford one
in a short span of time. Finally, creating a compost pit may occupy a space but is doable
due to the availability of vast space and is beneficial also because at that time Ms.
Minerales was also in need of soil for her newly constructed plant box. Hence the
creation of compost pit was initiated.
The creation of the compost pit started in the first day of the Brigada Eskwela
and was lead by the advisers of Grade 1 and 2. It was decided that the compost pit will
only be a quarter of feet deep to address the safety of the learners. The parents joined
hand in hand in fulfilling the project and were persistent throughout the project. They
spend two hours or more every day digging the hole and at the fourth day the compost
pit was done.
The compost pit will be used generally by grades one and two and will follow a
system of dump and burry. This is to address the creation of fertile soil for the future
plant box that the school plans to build for its more improved “Gulayan sa Paaralan” .
With this intervention the school hope that the school year will have a better waste
disposal system that the past years have had through the strong and firm conviction of
the teachers and the cooperation of the learners and the involved parents.
