Standard Form of a Polynomial Function
The de ree o any term is the exponent it carries.

The de ree o a polynomial is the hi hest de ree o any o its terms.

The standard orm o a polynomial unction arran es the terms by de ree

rom reatest to least.

The end behavior o a raph depends on the leadin coefficient and the de ree o the
polynomial
When the leadin coefficient is POSITIVE, the ri ht side o a raph will ALWAYS o up.
When the leadin coefficient is NEGATIVE, the ri ht side o a raph with ALWAYS o down.

When the de ree o a polynomial is EVEN, both ends will be in the same direction.
When the de ree o a polynomial is ODD, both ends will be in opposite directions.

Turning Points
The turnin points in a raph depend on
the de ree o the polynomial (x4 has 3
turnin points or less, x3 has 2 turnin
points or less, etc)

Each turnin point is either a minimum

or a maximum o the raph and occur
when the direction o the raph chan es
rom ne ative to positive or positive to
ne ative.
Example 6: Describing End Behavior
Consider the leadin term o each polynomial unction. What is the end behavior o the
raph? Check your answer with a raphin calculator.
A) y = 4x3 – 3x
B) y = –2x4 + 8x3 – 8x2 + 2
